Walters set for Broncos halves as history repeats

The Advertiser4 days ago
Billy Walters appears set to wear his father's famous No.6 jersey in the "Battle of Brisbane'' with the Dolphins.
Broncos training on Monday was highly suggestive that the 31-year-old will replace injured Ezra Mam for Saturday night's clash at Suncorp Stadium.
Walters, who came off the bench at hooker in the 22-2 loss to Melbourne, trained alongside new halfback Ben Hunt, with Cory Paix slotting in at dummy-half.
Hunt will replace captain Adam Reynolds, who like Mam tore a hamstring against the Storm.
Walters played in the halves at the Storm and Wests Tigers and was initially signed by the Broncos to play in that position.
He also trained in the pre-season as a half/hooker and has done the reps and training to slot in and do the job with aplomb.
Walters played two trials in the halves to show coach Michael Maguire's hand about his abilities.
Billy's father Kevin won four of his five grand finals in the No.6 jersey, so it will be a nice touch to see him follow in those illustrious footsteps.
The sixth-placed Broncos will all but wrap up a finals berth if they can beat the Dolphins (eighth).
They will have their sights on a top-four spot, but to do that they probably need to win all four of their remaining games and hope fourth-placed Penrith, three points ahead of them on 31, slip up in the weeks ahead.
The Broncos also need to replace winger Selwyn Cobbo, who tore a hamstring late against the Storm.
Josiah Karapani appeared the early favourite at training, although Jesse Arthars is another option.
Paix is the obvious option at hooker after playing most of the season as the starting No.9.

Storm skipper Harry Grant snatches golden point thriller over Penrith

Harry Houdini! Storm skipper Harry Grant came up with a moment for the ages to seal a 22-18 win in golden point over the Panthers, ending the premiers' nine-game winning streak. With the game on the line, all of the Panthers' eyes were on the Storm's likely field goal kickers, Cameron Munster and Jonah Pezet. Grant spotted that and took his opportunity, with the star No. 9 making a darting run for the try-line and scoring the matchwinner under the posts. It capped a thrilling grand final rematch that had just about everything. It all started with a red-hot first half from the Panthers, who went into the break with a 12-4 lead — and a 100 per cent completion rate. Isaiah Papali'i opened the scoring after burrowing over from dummy-half before Xavier Coates responded to level the scores at 4-all. However there'll be plenty made of Coates' try after replays showed he knocked on into Dylan Edwards then regathered before grounding the ball. Penrith snatched the lead when Nathan Cleary backed himself and scored. But the Storm came out firing in the second half with Coates coming up with a magical five minutes. The Melbourne winger collected a loose ball and ran 65 metres to score a stunning try before leaping over Brian To'o minutes later to bat the ball back for Joe Chan to score. Those two big moments helped the Storm snatch the lead, until Scott Sorensen scored a crucial try to get the Panthers ahead again. And true to form, the Storm hit back five minutes later through Marion Seve — who was rocking protective goggles due to an eye injury he's returned from in recent weeks. As the clock wound down, the Panthers got themselves in prime field position and Cleary took a shot at field goal only for Moses Leota to be penalised for blocking. Munster attempted a field goal in the final 90 seconds, which fell short, while Cleary attempted two more — one of which was charged down by an epic Trent Loiero effort, sending the game to golden point. Grant then proved the Storm hero in one of the best games of the season.

Melbourne Storm star Harry Grant foxes Penrith to score ‘all-time' match-winner

Melbourne Storm captain Harry Grant has outfoxed Penrith in golden point to score an extraordinary solo match-winning try. After an epic 18-all struggle in regulation ended with drama when the Panthers were penalised for blocking on a Nathan Cleary field-goal attempt, Storm edged out their NRL premiership rivals in their first set in extra time. Cameron Munster and Jonah Pezet were both in position behind the ruck to attempt a field goal but Grant instead dummied and dived through for the four-pointer. 'It's Grant who dummies! Harry Grant, magician, pulls not just one rabbit — a whole family of rabbits out of the hat!' Andrew Voss screamed in commentary. Cooper Cronk described it as 'absolutely all-time'. 'All eyes on Munster and Pezet with the game on the line, Grant throws a dummy and the seas part in the Penrith defence. Wow,' he said on Fox Sports. Voss went on: 'I'm not one to draw on the Bible but I don't know whether Moses did it any better in parting the seas than what Harry Grant just did here.' 'That is a moment of absolute excellence in this amazing sport. What do you say about that? What else can you say?!' he added. The match-winning try came after Penrith turned the ball over on the halfway line in their first and only set in golden point. Victory has kept Craig Bellamy's Storm within touching distance of Canberra in top spot while Penrith are pulled back into a fight to hold onto fourth on the ladder. Melbourne were without Jahrome Hughes, who remains sidelined with a shoulder injury, and star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen (concussion).
