Hurricane-proof skyscrapers vulnerable to less powerful windstorms, study finds

Skyscrapers built to withstand major hurricanes fare much more poorly in less powerful windstorms known as derechos, researchers have found, raising questions for cities worldwide over the resilience of tall buildings as the climate emergency worsens.
A team from Florida International University's (FIU) civil and environmental engineering department studied the unexpectedly severe damage caused to buildings in Houston, a city with 50 skyscrapers of 492ft (150 metres) or more, during the 16 May 2024 derecho.
They found that the storm's long line of fast-moving thunderstorms spawned 'downburst' winds peaking at 90mph that bounced off the buildings and inflicted considerable damage, especially to the facades of structures designed to withstand stronger, category 4 hurricane-force wind speeds of up to 156mph.
The same buildings, by contrast, were virtually unscathed during category 1 Hurricane Beryl in July, when sustained wind speeds were similar to those of the earlier derecho, but without their more erratic, up and down nature, or explosive bursts at or near ground level.
The results were published on Friday by the peer-reviewed science website Frontiers in Built Environment. The FIU study focused on five of Houston's tallest and most iconic buildings but, the researchers say, it could have profound implications for cities elsewhere as the climate crisis and soaring ocean temperatures fuel stronger and more frequent severe weather events, including hurricanes, fires and floods.
They stress that the wind speeds in a derecho, which can vary from far below major hurricane strength to match or exceed it, is not as consequential as how that wind is dispersed. A 'unique characteristic' of a downburst, they say, is how the wind blows outwards in all directions when it reaches the ground.
'When strong winds move through a city, they can bounce due to interference between tall buildings. This increases pressure on walls and windows, making damage more severe than if the buildings were isolated,' said Omar Metwally, an FIU doctoral student and the report's co-author.
'On top of this, downbursts create intense, localized forces which can exceed typical design values for hurricanes, especially on the lower floors of tall buildings.'
Metwally called it a 'one-two punch effect' that the FIU team predicts will become an even worse problem for states around the Gulf of Mexico, where a 0.34F rise per decade over the last half-century is twice the rate of oceans globally.
Amal Elawady, professor of structural and wind engineering at FIU, and the team's leader, said the research would also have relevance in other countries, where regulations for building design and wind loads are often calculated primarily with hurricane categories in mind.
'It's not only a US issue. Downbursts are also very common and very frequent in Europe and worldwide,' she said.
'How a building responds to a thunderstorm is different from the way they respond to hurricanes, so it's something that needs to be considered, not just for the buildings, but also for the components, like the cladding, the envelope of the building.'

Metwally said he hoped the research would lead to a reevaluation of regulations and design of future tall buildings, as well as urban planning, as officials became more aware of the complexity and potential negative outcomes of downburst events.
The FIU analysis focused on Houston's Chevron Building Auditorium, CenterPoint Energy Plaza, El Paso Energy Building, RRI Energy Plaza, and Wedge International Tower, all built between 1962 and 2003 and between 518ft and 742ft tall. Construction standards require them to withstand winds up to 67 metres per second, or category 4 hurricane strength.
During last year's derecho, facade panels were dislodged and cladding damaged, especially on corners and lower floors. Broken glass and other hazardous debris fell onto downtown streets and the aftermath brought significant socio-economic impacts including traffic disruptions, businesses temporarily closing, and a huge bill for clean-up and repairs.
The FIU team ran simulations of the downbursts and hurricanes on modeled replicas at the university's Wall of Wind experimental facility in Miami, funded by the National Science Foundation. Suction on the sides of buildings was substantially more evident during downburst events, explaining the ripping away of cladding and broken windows that did not occur during the hurricane.
'It's not likely that a tall building will fail under wind, either hurricane or downburst,' Elawady said.
'But it causes damage, debris and water intrusion, and once you have a broken window you have a change in the internal pressure in the building and then the total force on the building is different,' she said.
Ongoing and future FIU research will look at the effects of downbursts on transmission lines, lighting poles, telecommunication towers and low rise buildings as well as more studies on skyscrapers.
'It's a very complex problem that needs to be thoroughly studied, and we're trying our best to better understand it,' Elawady said.

A 40-year-old Israeli man was torn apart by sharks as he swam in the Med off a popular tourist beach near Hadera, northwest Israel, on Monday. The beach famously attracts sharks, and people often play with the animals - even pulling their tails and hand-feeding them fish. Footage from the beach shows parents allowing their kids to paddle amongst the creatures moments before the fatal frenzy. Beach-goers could do nothing but watch as the swimmer was ripped apart in the waves - with harrowing footage capturing the moment the water around him foams red with blood. Yannis Papastamatiou, a shark expert at Florida International University, insists we must remember that sharks - of any species - are wild animals. He said: "There has been warning signs that somebody might get hurt at that location in Israel, after the way people were behaving. "Sharks gather in that area because they are attracted by the warm water released by a power station," he explained. Yannis said: "The public there were treating them like pets. People were walking right around them and hand feeding them. "Eventually, someone was going to get hurt. And unfortunately, someone has. These aren't pets, they are large predators." Sharks attacks are - thankfully - very rare in the Mediterranean sea, and certainly should not scare you off a visit. Yannis said: "It's a tragic situation when anyone gets hurt, but it's important to remember how rare these situations are. "There's been a lot of sharks in this area, and lot of people in the water over the past ten years, and this is the first attack." 9 9 Most holiday destinations are very safe - and tourists are highly unlikely to even see a shark if unless they visit a hotspot. Alessandro advised avoiding "power plants and fish farms where large, potentially dangerous sharks are frequently present". He added: "If you know that a particular site is regularly visited by large, potentially dangerous sharks or that they have been seen in the area on those days, it is advisable to avoid entering the water altogether. "Most important, never dive alone and never spearfish in those areas. Yannis said sharks are also known to gather around "ports or harbours where fish, carcasses or blood from fishing activities might be dumped", so these are best avoided as well. There are 51 species of shark in the Mediterranean sea, but both experts stressed over-fishing has significantly reduced their numbers. Alessandro said: "The most dangerous species, the great white shark, once common in the Mediterranean, is now extremely rare. "The last fatal attack caused by this species in the area dates back to 1989."

US ports to use Covid-like tests to identify illegally trafficked seafood species

Last year, a colleague of Diego Cardeñosa sent the international shark trade researcher a few pieces of shark fin taken from a bowl of soup in New York City. Using a PCR test similar to those used during the Covid-19 pandemic to test for the virus, Cardeñosa was able to identify the species behind the fin as sandbar shark, an endangered species found in tropical and warm-temperate waters. Now, Cardeñosa and other scientists from Florida International University, alongside law enforcement officials from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), plan to deploy the tests at ports across the country in order to crack down on seafood fraud and fish trafficking. Illegal fishing adversely affects legitimate commercial fishers as well as fish populations. Almost a third of shark species are threatened or near threatened with extinction and the value of world trade in shark parts is almost $1bn a year, according to the UN. At the same time, US consumption of seafood is increasing, rising by more than 30% in the decade from 2002. About 80% of this comes from foreign exports – mostly from Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia and Vietnam, according to the US department of agriculture. The PCR device uses genetic markers developed for more than 100 species including great whites, hammerheads, makos, oceanic whitetips, threshers and whale sharks. Other species whose genetic markers have been developed for the PCR device include all Atlantic tuna species and European eel. Once samples are added into the device, the genetic markers produce a specific chemical reaction depending on which fish species is being tested for. Cardeñosa recently tested a container labeled as 'American eel' for European eel. Upon performing the tests using eel samples from the container, the PCR devices lit up, he said, confirming the presence of European eel. 'If none of the samples light up or give you an increase in fluorescence in the tube, that means none of those tubes have European eel in them,' he said. The tools are designed to give law enforcement officers enough preliminary evidence to stop a shipment, he added. Typical port inspections currently consist of visual identifications of fish species yet, according to Noaa, the vast majority of fish and seafood products imported into the US enter as filets, processed fish products or shark fins without carcasses. As a result, relying on visual inspections to identify species can be incredibly challenging. Noaa spokesperson James Miller said: 'Deployment of the PCR device will allow officers to conduct genetic analysis in real-time during inspections and detect seafood fraud.' The device also saves money. The submission and analysis of a single fish sample to a government forensic laboratory can cost several hundred dollars. In contrast, the cost of collection and analysis of a fish sample taken in the field using the PCR device costs less than $1. 'These efforts protect US consumers, who can feel safe knowing they are buying legal and safe seafood,' Miller said.
