Janmashtami at a dargah: Devotees flock to Rajasthan shrine; Hindus and Muslims celebrate centuries-old tradition together

Time of India2 days ago
Jaipur: In Narhar town of Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with a unique twist - at a dargah.
The shrine of Sharif Hazrat Hajib Shakarbar, the 14th-century dargah has been a symbol of Hindu-Muslim brotherhood for centuries.
"On Janmashtami, mostly Hindu devotees organise a procession and members of the Muslim community welcome them with garlands," said Kareem Pir, a khadim (hereditary custodian or caretaker) at the dargah.
This year, the three-day festivities began Friday, drawing devotees, especially newlyweds, from across India. The festivities at the shrine, also called Shakkar Baba ki Dargah, feature dramas, bhajans, qawwalis and devotional programmes dedicated to Lord Krishna.
"One of the biggest features of this dargah is that people of all religions have the right to worship here, according to their methods. A Hindu family started the Janmashtami fair many years ago and, since then, the tradition has continued," Khaleel Budhana, the dargah committee chairman, told TOI. "Newlyweds not only visit the dargah for blessings but also to pray for a child."
A notable tradition involves residents offering curd as "prasad" whenever a cow or buffalo gives birth.

Shankar Singh, a local, said, "As a symbol of communal harmony, a huge fair has been held here on Janmashtami since time immemorial."
The tradition has been maintained by the Khadim and Inzamiya Committee of the dargah for centuries. Mohammad Sadiq, a local, said, "It is difficult to remember when and how it all started. We have heard many stories from our grandparents."

Indoreans take up brooms to keep swachh city spick & span

Indore: In a unique display of civic responsibility, public representatives and people of the cleanest city in the country picked up brooms to clean up the city as sanitation workers enjoyed their Goga Navami holiday on Monday. The initiative was part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga - Har Ghar Swachhta Abhiyan'. Urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, MP Shankar Lalwani and mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav led the drive, sweeping the streets at Rajwada. Various residential and trade organisations also participated in the city-wide community cleanliness campaign. Minister Vijayvargiya said, "Public participation is in the DNA of Indore's citizens, which is why every city campaign succeeds. The people of Indore love their city. Those who love their city are always ready to work for it." Recalling his dream of a clean Indore, green Indore from 20 years ago, he said, Indore is now clean and efforts are underway to make it green through continuous plantation drives. Mayor Bhargav emphasised that the cleanliness drive was a gesture of respect for the sanitation workers, who tirelessly keep the city clean during various festivals and public events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like China Cuts Supply - Aussie Miners Set to Jump Fat Tail Daily Learn More Undo "When they have a day off for Goga Navami, it is our responsibility to take to the streets in their honour. We declared a holiday for them and took on the responsibility of cleaning the entire city ourselves," he said. Indore Municipal Corporation has a 'force' of around 10,000 sanitation workers, who work daily in at least two shifts to help maintain cleanliness of the city. On their annual celebration and holiday, this responsibility was fulfilled by locals. "We love Indore as there are many things to feel proud on including its tag of country's cleanest city and to maintain it, our sanitation workers work day and night," said Akshay Jain, a garment shop owner in Rajwada area. He added that sanitation workers get only one holiday on Goga Navami and by cleaning the city on this day, Indoreans pay respect and gratitude towards them. On this occasion, the residents of Shalimar Bunglow Park took a pledge to maintain cleanliness, before they picked up brooms and cleaned their colony. The Goga Navami festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm and fanfare. The event, an annual tradition for the Valmiki community, saw grand processions and vibrant tableaux originating from various localities, including Raj Mohalla, Juna Risala, Amar Tekri, Gadi Adda, and Pardeshipura. Madurai corpn launches ‘Ezhil Koodal' to clean up city hotspots

1 2 Madurai: Seeking to improve its poor ranking in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 survey, the Madurai Corporation has launched the 'Ezhil Koodal' initiative under the theme "Namma Sutham, Namma Perumai" (Our Cleanliness, Our Pride). The project aims to turn select areas into model clean zones through sanitation drives, beautification, and citizen participation. As part of the plan, 24 high-footfall 'hotspots', including bus stands, markets, and main roads, have been identified for round-the-clock maintenance. Extra sanitation workers, volunteers, and tractors have been deployed zone-wise to keep these areas litter-free. Corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan said the effort goes beyond cleaning. "We are working with residents' associations to clear identified areas and gather feedback. Awareness drives are also being held to discourage dumping on vacant land. Afternoon and night cleaning shifts are being introduced to handle commercial waste," she said. Assistant city health officer Abisekh said the initiative combines symbolic and practical steps. "Each day, one spot is cleaned and marked with an Ezhil Koodal banner. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo In bus stands and markets, these banners will serve as reminders," he said. The civic body is also considering placing bins inside TNSTC buses. To prevent defacement of public walls, private agencies will be engaged to paint spaces where posters are regularly pasted. The campaign also uses cultural methods such as rangolis at dumping spots and planting saplings to reclaim vacant land. Under the Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiatives (TANII), the corporation has cleared the installation of 60 AI-powered cameras at a cost of ₹50 lakh to track garbage bins and flag overflowing waste within two months. In addition, a QR code-based tracking system has been introduced in the South Zone, covering 18 wards, to monitor sanitation workers' movement and enable residents to lodge complaints or share feedback. School van falls into ditch; 31 kids injured

T'puram: A private van carrying children to St Shantal English Medium School plunged into a roadside ditch at Malamukal in Vattiyoorkavu on Monday morning. The van lost control while reversing on a narrow stretch, overturned and fell into the nearby ditch. However, 31 students and a teacher who were onboard all escaped with minor injuries. They sought treatment at a private hospital in Sasthamangalam. General education minister V Sivankutty, accompanied by Vattiyoorkavu MLA V K Prasanth, visited the hospital to check on the injured. The minister promised safety measures to prevent similar incidents, emphasizing that "it was a close call and it could have been much worse." A teacher at the scene attributed the mishap to poor road conditions and absence of safety handrails. Locals echoed these concerns, pointing out that private vehicles drop off students on the roadside rather than entering the school premises. Eyewitnesses say the van lost control while reversing and subsequently slid into the ditch. According to Vattiyoorkavu police, the students had a similar narrow escape when the van went out of control and fell into a pit on a hilly terrain recently. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Residents have long expressed concern over the safety of this stretch, especially during school hours.
