Before becoming his Begum, Sharmila Tagore had ONE condition for the Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan

Time of India2 days ago
Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi had a unique love story. Their romance began at a party. Pataudi proposed, but Tagore set a condition. She asked him to hit three sixes in a row. He did it and she agreed to marry him. Their interfaith marriage faced challenges. Both families had strong traditions.
Before she became the Begum of Pataudi,
Sharmila Tagore
added a touch of drama to her real-life love story—one that could rival any Bollywood script. At the peak of her stardom in the 1960s, her romance with India's cricketing heartthrob Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was already making headlines.
But what many don't know is that before agreeing to marry the Nawab, Sharmila set a lighthearted yet bold condition—one that involved cricket, of course. What followed was a charming blend of romance, sportsmanship, and tradition-defying love.
A match made at an after-match party
According to reports, Sharmila and Mansoor dated for quite some time before deciding to tie the knot. The two reportedly met through mutual friends at an after-match party in Delhi, which Sharmila attended after watching a game—despite not knowing much about cricket back then.
Interestingly, Tiger Pataudi, too, hadn't seen many of her films.
The proposal with a twist
As their romance blossomed, Pataudi eventually proposed. But Sharmila added a playful twist: she would only say yes if he hit three consecutive sixes in his next match. Amused by the condition, he laughed it off—but rose to the challenge and delivered exactly that on the field. True to her word, Sharmila said yes, and the two went on to have a grand wedding, marking the beginning of one of India's most iconic love stories.
The veteran actress also reflected on the challenges she faced ahead of her marriage to Pataudi. Being an interfaith couple in the 1960s came with its share of scrutiny. She noted that both her family and Pataudi's came from strong cultural traditions—while her relatives had all married within the Bengali community, his family had followed the norms of their own circle.
Keeping It simple despite the buzz
Sharmila revealed that they simply informed their families of their decision to marry, without anticipating the deeper concerns it might stir. At the time, she was immersed in her film career, and Pataudi was busy with cricket, so they remained largely unaware of the tensions happening behind the scenes.

Mohit Suri schools interviewer for comparing Shraddha Kapoor's stardom to Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor: ‘Her stardom is insane'

Before delivering the romantic film of the year, Saiyaara, filmmaker Mohit Suri had already given audiences several fan-favourite romantic films — one of the most iconic being Aashiqui 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur. In a recent interaction, Mohit clapped back at an interviewer for comparing Shraddha-Aditya's stardom to that of Bollywood A-list couple Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, when Mohit was asked about how Shraddha and Aditya's stardom remains unmatched compared to Alia-Ranbir's, the filmmaker responded, saying, 'I think Shraddha has seen some level of stardom. I don't know what does that mean but Shraddha's stardom is insane. Even till today if she goes somewhere, people start shouting Aarohi (her character's name from Aashiqui 2), and it doesn't matter how many films she does. I don't pretend to say that I know what it takes to become a star but I know what is right for my film and I do that.' Alia and Ranbir shared screen space in Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra. The film was panned by critics and received mixed reviews. Aashiqui 2, on the other hand, was a massive hit with audiences and emerged as one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2013—despite featuring newcomers Shraddha and Aditya in the lead roles. It was also after Aashiqui 2's success that Shraddha's career reached new heights. She went on to prove her mettle again with the Stree franchise, with her most recent release Stree 2 becoming a massive blockbuster, minting Rs 857.15 crore worldwide. Earlier, during an event, Shraddha had admitted how Aashiqui 2 escalated her career. She said, 'Aarohi came in my life, and changed everything. I am forever grateful and thankful to each and everyone who gave so much love to me as Aarohi. People remember the film, the songs and the story, even after so many years. I would like to also thank Mohit Suri sir for giving me this character and an opportunity of a lifetime. It will always stay with me.'
