Porn sites to make major change to who can watch x-rated videos
People will have to verify their age to watch porn videos online, Ofcom has announced.
From July 25, all sites that show pornographic material, will be required to check viewers are over 18 in a bid to prevent underage people developing addictions to X-rated content.
Major porn providers in the UK including Pornhub, BoyfriendTV and Cam4 have all agreed to implement the change by next month's deadline.
Eight per cent of British eight to 14-year-olds had visited a porn site or app in a month, a new study has found, including three per cent of eight to nine year olds.
Boys aged 13 to 14 were the most likely to view porn with 19 per cent having done so, with girls seeing significantly less, on 11 per cent.
Technology secretary Peter Kyle, said: 'Children will be prevented from accessing porn from next month thanks to the Online Safety Act.
'I'm glad to see that Pornhub and others have today made it clear they will be bringing in tough age assurance methods to comply with the law.'
Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom's director of online safety, said the change would bring pornography in line with other adult restricted activities such as smoking and drinking alcohol.
He said: 'Society has long protected youngsters from products that aren't suitable for them, from alcohol to smoking or gambling. But for too long children have been only a click away from harmful pornography online.
'Now, change is happening. These age checks will bring pornography into line with how we treat adult services in the real world, without compromising access and privacy for over-18s.'
Marcus Johnstone of PCD Solicitors, a firm which specialises in providing legal representation for people accused of sexual offences, said the 'frighteningly easy' access of explicit material by minors had become a 'dangerous trend'.
He said: 'I come across people of all ages in my work who are addicted to porn and there is no question that this is starting at an ever younger age.
'The platforms are designed to be addictive and can lead people to seek progressively more extreme material. In some cases, porn can influence real life behaviour encouraging impressionable young people to try rough sex and so on.'
But he added that increased scrutiny from Ofcom and the threat of fines alone would not be enough to combat the issue, and that preventing children from accessing porn in an age where people are having sex earlier.
'The big challenge for the websites and apps that offer legal pornography is how to ensure robust and effective age checks when we know the youngsters of today are agile at circumvention', he said.
'I hope the threat of fines and scrutiny from OFCOM help but it would seem to me that until we introduce ID cards and digital ID it will be impossible for the tech companies to ensure proper compliance.' More Trending
'Of course the real danger zone for pornographic material is the dark web where extreme and illegal material proliferates and there is frighteningly easy access.'
'I have cases where clients as young as 14 access the dark web. In one case my client, aged 15, accessed the dark web to buy drugs (delivered to his local Post Office) but also then found access to extreme illegal pornography.'
He continued: 'As a society we must accept that children, although illegal, are having sex at a younger age. In my opinion it will be impossible to stop them viewing porn sites. Any teenager with a phone can now watch and read content that is both illegal and heinous, and is unregulated by any company or agency.
'It is the dark web that is the greatest menace to our society and is a gateway to a world of abuse, exploitation and radicalisation. This is where better policing is required but if we can stop our kids wanting to go there in the first place that must be a good thing.'

One worker at the Nikolus Tavern said of the first argument: 'We recognised him as the footballer Andy Carroll immediately. He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' Reports claimed that police arrived and took the former West Ham ace, who was "very calm" to one side for a chat. He was later allowed to return to Lou, who is a well-known celebrity hairstylist. However, hours later police were reportedly called again by staff after reports of damage to the couple's room at a £500-a-night boutique hotel. Officers are said to have escorted Andy to a local station for questioning but no arrests were made. Another source claimed Lou did not stay with her boyfriend that night. They said: "After the restaurant episode, there was another incident at the hotel. This time, the footballer went to the police station. We know the woman stayed somewhere else that night.' Meanwhile, a British holidaymaker who reportedly spotted the pair while out for a stroll accused Andy of being "very drunk" adding that he shouted at Lou: "I'm done with us!" 'Outback killer' to make 'explosive' deathbed declaration after murdering Brit
Bradley John Murdoch has reportedly been moved to palliative care and could make a shocking revelation about the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio before he dies An Aussie Outback killer who brutally killed a British backpacker could soon make an "explosive" statement as he nears death. Bradley John Murdoch, who is dying from terminal throat cancer, is serving a life sentence for killing Peter Falconio and attacking his girlfriend, Joanne Lees, on a remote highway in the Northern Territory back in 2001. Mr Falconio, 28, and his partner, both from Yorkshire, were on a road trip in their VW Kombi campervan between Alice Springs and Darwin when they were flagged down by Murdoch and attacked. Mr Falconio was fatally shot in the head while Ms Lees was chucked in the attacker's car with her wrists bound with cable ties. Miraculously she managed to escape and hid in the bushes for five hours before flagging down a passing truck. Now, nearly 24 years on, Murdoch is nearing death himself after he was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer in 2019. He was moved to palliative care from Alice Springs Correctional Centre earlier this month and according to true crime author Robin Bowles, who sat down with the killer a few years ago, he could make an 'explosive' statement in his final words. She told 7NEWS: 'I know what they are, and they will be explosive. It's a shame they weren't able to be released earlier. You can't sue a dead man, so if he's making the claims, and he's died - the proverbial might hit the fan.' Murdoch has never revealed the location of Mr Falconio's body and in a desperate attempt to find the tourist's remains, Australian police this week announced a huge 500,000 Australian dollar (£238,670) reward for information that leads to the discovery of the British backpacker's remains. Police said ahead of the 24th anniversary of the murder next month they held out 'hope' that someone would now come forward. Acting Northern Territory Police commander Mark Grieve said: 'In what will be the 24th anniversary of (Falconio's) death this July, being next month, we're asking for anyone who may believe they have information that can assist to please come forward and contact police. It's never too late to reach out, and at least start that conversation with police, because you just never know how beneficial that information that you may hold may be. We recognise the passage of time that's transpired, however, it's never too late to reach out and start that conversation with police." Murdoch, 67, has always denied the killing and protested his innocence during the 2005 murder trial. After seven weeks he was found guilty of murdering Mr Falconio and assaulting and attempting to kidnap Ms Lees. Northern Territory Police have previously searched swathes of land close to the crime scene but Mr Falconio's remains have never been found. Murdoch was spotted on CCTV at a petrol station in Alice Springs - about 190 miles south of the crime scene - in the hours after the attack. He is then said to have driven around 800 miles through the night and the following day across the inhospitable Tanami Track, reaching Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia at about 8pm. He was arrested and charged with the murder of Mr Falconio 16 months after the attack, thanks to DNA evidence and Ms Lees identifying him. Ms Lees, who has since returned to the UK, told Australian current affairs programme 60 Minutes in 2017 she still wanted to "bring him home". "Pete lost his life on that night, but I lost mine too," she said at the time. "I'll never be fully at peace if Pete's not found, but I accept that that is a possibility."

British woman killed in gas explosion at bar in Spanish holiday hotspot
A British woman has died in a gas explosion at a bar in southern Spain. The 56-year-old was one of two women killed when a butane canister ignited at the Casa Javi bar in San Pedro del Pinatar in Murcia last Thursday. She is believed to have been heading to the weekly market when she was caught in the blast. Another 17 people were injured. Her death was confirmed today in a social media post from the local council. The other victim was the bar owner, a Moroccan woman so far only named as Hind, who was said to have suffered severe burns, El Español reported. Police, ambulances and fire engines rushed to the bar shortly after midday on June 19 following the powerful explosion. Photos taken at the scene show what appears to have been a window which is blown out and debris strewn across the pavement outside. The owner of a shop nearby said: 'My entire business shook, the windows and everything.' No cause has yet been officially determined, but a Judicial Police inspection ruled the gas cylinder's seal had been 'sabotaged', according to reports.
