AI will bridge development divides across Asean, says Anwar
'For Asean, this is a generational opportunity. With over 700 million citizens, a rapidly growing digital economy and an extraordinary diversity of cultures and languages, our region is uniquely placed to shape AI in ways that are inclusive, ethical and true to our shared values,' he said when launching the Asean AI Summit 2025 here on Tuesday (Aug 12).
He also said that Asean should be a leader in harnessing AI through innovation grounded in trust, rooted in equity, and proudly shaped by Southeast Asian values.
'In doing so, we will ensure that the true measure of AI's success is not in the sophistication
of its technology but in its ability to meaningfully uplift the lives of our rakyat in a way that is sustainable, inclusive and just,' he added.
With the 13th Malaysia Plan, Anwar said that the government was committed to digital transformation and must drive sustainable and inclusive growth.
He also said that at the centre of that transformation was Malaysia's ambition to be an AI Nation.
'AI will not be a tool for the few. It will be a force for all, powering better governance, sparking innovation, and improving lives.
'Through our AI Nation Framework, we will ensure that AI works for every Malaysian, in every corner of the country,' he added.
Anwar also launched Malaysia's first large language model (LLM), called Ilmu.
The model was fully developed in Malaysia by YTL AI Lab.

Engagement session for basic MHIT product yet to be finalised
KUALA LUMPUR: Engagement sessions with key stakeholders for the development of the Medical and Health Insurance and Takaful (MHIT) basic product are currently still ongoing, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the structure and design of the product have yet to be finalised. He added that the basic product concept is targeted for full completion by December 2025, with implementation planned for the end of 2026. "Engagement sessions with key stakeholders are actively being conducted to ensure that all feedback regarding the design features of the MHIT basic product is considered and aligned with the principles of affordability and long-term sustainability. "However, it is important to emphasise that the decision to purchase this basic product is entirely voluntary and based on individual choice," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He was responding to Datuk Dr Alias Razak (PN–Kuala Nerus) on the status of the study on withdrawals from Account 2 of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) to finance health insurance premiums and the likelihood of it being implemented in the near future. Commenting further, Anwar said once the MHIT basic product policy is finalised, the EPF is prepared to consider enhancements to the i-Lindung facility to allow the use of Account 2 for the future purchase of the product. "As with other insurance and takaful products, policyholders can expect to pay for the MHIT basic premiums from any financial resources they have. "The use of funds from Account 2 under the EPF scheme is merely one of the proposed financing options currently available to consumers for purchasing insurance and takaful protection," he said. In June, it was reported that the government was c onsidering allowing EPF members to use their Account 2 savings to pay for monthly health insurance premiums. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said if implemented, 16 million EPF contributors could gain access to private hospital treatments using their contributions.

India cenbank committee recommends AI framework for finance sector
MUMBAI (Reuters) -A Reserve Bank of India committee has recommended a framework for developing AI capabilities for the country's financial sector, while safeguarding it against associated risks, according to a report released on Wednesday. The committee has recommended setting up a digital infrastructure to help build indigenous AI models and a multi-stakeholder standing committee to evaluate risks and opportunities. It also suggested building a fund to incentivise the development of homegrown AI models tailored for the needs of India's financial services sector. "The report envisions a financial ecosystem where encouraging innovation is in harmony, and not at odds, with mitigation of risk," the RBI said in a statement. The report contains 26 recommendations under six categories including infrastructure, capacity, policy, governance, protection and assurance. Other key recommendations by the eight-member committee headed by Pushpak Bhattacharyya, a computer scientist at IIT Bombay, include issuing of an enabling framework to integrate AI with existing digital public platforms such as instant payment system UPI, and designing audit frameworks. The central bank had set up the committee in December to develop a Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of Artificial Intelligence (FREEAI) for the finance sector. "The challenge with regulating AI is in striking the right balance, making sure that society stands to gain from what this technology has to offer, while mitigating its risks," according to the report.
