Novak Djokovic Withdraws From Cincinnati Ahead of US Open
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open for the second consecutive year, tournament organisers confirmed to U.S. media on Monday.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion decided to skip the U.S. Open warm-up tournament after back-to-back semi-final losses at the French Open and Wimbledon, where he was defeated each time by world number one Jannik Sinner.
Djokovic also withdrew from Cincinnati last year as the defending champion shortly after his victory in the singles event at the Paris Olympics.
The U.S. Open will be held from August 24 to September 7 in New York City.

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) India head coach Gautam Gambhir was all praise for skipper Shubman Gill leading from the front during the just-concluded England series as he expects him to shine brightly in years to come. Gill played a massive role in India's creditable 2-2 draw, scoring 754 runs with four hundreds in the five-match series. 'I think Gill has done a fabulous job, that's all I can say and he will keep doing well for Indian cricket," Gambhir told reporters on his arrival from England on Tuesday. While he had a role in making tactical calls, Gambhir didn't want to take any credit for the superb show in England. 'We are really happy. I think the boys deserve every bit of it because they way the fought since the last two months in all the five Test matches. They deserve all the plaudits." Mohammed Siraj is getting praise from all and sundry but the coach said that he can go on waxing eloquent about all others who made significant impact at various points during the series. 'Look he (Siraj) has been really brilliant, not only him the entire team has performed brilliantly and it is really difficult for me to mention one name. 'These guys have, be it Shubman, be it Siraj, Jaddu, Washi, Jaiswal, I can stand here and talk for the next 20 mins about the individual performances. The event, which carries a winner's purse of Rs 1 crore, will be competed for the first time over nine rounds in classical round robin format across Masters and Challengers segments. This year's Masters field includes a powerful mix of global and Indian talent. Alongside Erigaisi and Liang, the opening round will see top-seeded Dutch GM Anish face American GM Ray Robson, while Gujrathi, Vincent Keymer, Nihal Sarin, and others are all set for high-stakes match-ups. The tournament, which was played over seven rounds in the previous two editions, will see participation from 19 Grandmasters and will offer crucial FIDE Circuit points. 'He Will Get ODI Captaincy': Kaif Backs Shubman Gill To Replace Rohit Sharma Soon
Last Updated: Mohammed Kaif has supported Shubman Gill for ODI leadership because of Rohit Sharma's uncertain future. Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif has said that since it is not known how long Rohit Sharma will continue as ODI captain, Shubman Gill will soon be handed ODI leadership too, especially after his exploits as Test captain in England, where he led India to a 2-2 series draw, on his first stint as Test skipper. Gill 's appointment as Test skipper for the high-stakes England tour, ahead of more seasoned contenders, sparked widespread surprise. Even the support of head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar could not silence the scepticism. But after his standout performance, Kaif has thrown his weight behind Gill to lead India in ODIs too, amidst growing uncertainty over Rohit's international future. 'He will get the ODI captaincy as well because we don't know how long Rohit Sharma will continue as captain. Gill is ready to take over. He scores in white-ball cricket. He has performed well as captain here in Tests and led from the front," Kaif said while speaking on his YouTube channel. 'When you go with a young team, you have to do both things, score with the bat and do well as captain. A brilliant tour for him overall," Kaif said. 'Shubman Gill, as captain, created opportunities with both hands in this series. When he became captain, there were many questions as to why he was made captain, looking at his Test record," Kaif added. ODIs are now the sole format in which Rohit continues to be active. He stepped away from T20Is in June 2024 after leading India to a T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados and followed it up with a surprise retirement from Tests in May, just weeks ahead of India's team announcement for the England tour. While speculation about Rohit's ODI future continues to grow, the BCCI had clarified at the time of his Test retirement that he would continue as skipper in the 50-over format. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
