New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) India head coach Gautam Gambhir was all praise for skipper Shubman Gill leading from the front during the just-concluded England series as he expects him to shine brightly in years to come.
Gill played a massive role in India's creditable 2-2 draw, scoring 754 runs with four hundreds in the five-match series.
'I think Gill has done a fabulous job, that's all I can say and he will keep doing well for Indian cricket," Gambhir told reporters on his arrival from England on Tuesday.
While he had a role in making tactical calls, Gambhir didn't want to take any credit for the superb show in England.
'We are really happy. I think the boys deserve every bit of it because they way the fought since the last two months in all the five Test matches. They deserve all the plaudits." Mohammed Siraj is getting praise from all and sundry but the coach said that he can go on waxing eloquent about all others who made significant impact at various points during the series.
'Look he (Siraj) has been really brilliant, not only him the entire team has performed brilliantly and it is really difficult for me to mention one name.
'These guys have, be it Shubman, be it Siraj, Jaddu, Washi, Jaiswal, I can stand here and talk for the next 20 mins about the individual performances. I think the boys have been brilliant in the last two months," Gambhir said. PTI KHS KHS APA APA

Sachin Tendulkar's Honest Take On Shubman Gill's Captaincy: "There Were Things..."

As the Indian cricketing folklore sings praises for Shubman Gill 's performance and leadership on the tour of England, there are some who dug their observations deeper in order to analyse the potential Gill holds and the weaknesses he has, both as a batter and a leader. Gill scored 754 runs on the tour of England, breaking several all-time records and valiantly helped India draw the series 2-2. As far as his leadership credentials are concerned, the great Sachin Tendulkar had some interesting insights to share. "All in all, a fantastic result. 2-2, things could've been different, but there are no ifs and buts in cricket," said Tendulkar. "Captaincy has a lot to do with how the bowlers are bowling, how disciplined they are, and how long they can persist with their plans," Tendulkar further added. "Sometimes what happens is that if things are not going the bowlers' way, they start experimenting. That is when the captain feels that the fielders he has on the ground are not enough, he needs more, because runs will be coming from everywhere. "He still looked calm and composed, but when partnerships happen, it becomes difficult for any captain, and the priority becomes to dry their runs." Though Sachin feels there were areas in Gill's decision making as a captain that could've been different, overall, the control the India skipper had on the game and his team impressed him. "Overall I felt he controlled the team well. There were areas, things could've been different but, everyone has their opinion. This was his first series and possibly against the most attacking side in Test cricket. I don't think any other team bats the way this England side does," he said. "Shubman batted brilliantly throughout the series, he looked calm and composed, organised," said Tendulkar. "When it comes to quality batting, you've got to have a clear head and a game plan. And he was extemely consistent as far as his thought process is concerned because it reflects on your footwork. If you are not clear in your head, your body doesn't respond accordingly. His body responded brilliantly, he looked so much control he had so much time to play the ball. "There was precision in his footwork. The most important thing that I noticed was the respect to a good ball. Where the tendency sometimes is to push the ball on your front foot even if the ball is not near your foot, he was able to defend there. And consistently defend well on front foot. His ability to leave was very good. Overall, shot selection was very, very good and precise."

No IND vs PAK at Asia Cup hockey as Pakistan makes U-turn after applying for visas: Report

The chances of a India vs Pakistan hockey match during the Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir, Bihar, now looks extremely bleak as the Pakistan hockey team has reportedly made a U-turn after applying for the visas. read more The Pakistan hockey team will not travel to India to take part in the Asia Cup, which will be held in Rajgir, Bihar, from 29 August 29 to 7 September, a media report has claimed. The winner of the Asia Cup will qualify for the Men's FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 in the Netherlands and Belgium, but it seems Pakistan are not willing to take any chance after the recent border conflict between the two nations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As per a report in The Hindu, the Indian government was willing to approve the visas of Pakistani hockey players for the tournament, but the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has decided against travelling for the Asia Cup, citing security reasons. No IND vs PAK at Asia Cup hockey? The Bangladesh hockey team has been sent an invitation for the tournament as a result of Pakistan's withdrawal from the Asia Cup. 'In fact, PHF has written a letter to the Asian Hockey Federation on Wednesday, saying that it won't be able to compete in the Asia Cup due to security reasons. We have invited Bangladesh now,' a Hockey India official told The Hindu. The report further added that the Indian government had clarified in July that no Pakistani sporting team would be denied entry into India for international tournaments. Pakistan also applied for Indian visas at the end of July, but things came to a halt after the Pakistan government asked them not to accept any invitation for travel to India without its 'explicit approval.' The latest decision has also put question marks over the participation of the Pakistani hockey team in the upcoming Junior World Cup, which will take place in Chennai and Madurai in November-December. Pakistan hockey team's last visit to India was in 2023 for the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai. Pakistan's decision not to travel to India, however, is on expected lines as the relations between the two countries have nosedived since the Pahalgam terror attack in April. India's retaliatory action through Operation Sindoor resulted in massive damage to terrorist camps in Pakistan and the Nur Khan airbase in Rawalpindi.
