Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen dies aged 69
The musician, who was part of the band's original lineup in the late 1970s and early 1980s, passed away on Saturday. He had been suffering from early onset dementia.
His death was announced in a statement posted on Gang of Four's Facebook page by surviving drummer Hugo Burnham on behalf of himself and fellow surviving founder member, singer Jon King.
"It is with broken yet full hearts that we share the news that Dave Allen, our old music partner, friend, and brilliant musician, died on Saturday morning," their statement reads. "He was at home with his family.
"Dave had endured the early-onset of mixed dementia for some years which has been a heartbreaking time for his wife Paddy, his children, and close friends."
Hugo continued: "Our love and thoughts are with them. Jon and I (Hugo) went to see him and spent a lovely afternoon with him and the family. We talked and laughed for hours, sharing rich and vivid memories of good times together. Adventures, careers in music, raising families, our interwoven lives spanning half a century. We've been so very lucky to have had the Ace of Bass in our lives."
They went on to say that he and Jon had planned to try and get Dave on stage during the current lineup's upcoming farewell U.S. tour before he succumbed to his illness.
Gang of Four rose to fame with their 1979 debut album Entertainment!, with Allen also appearing on the follow-up Solid Gold before leaving to form the band Shriekback. Considered one of the most important post-punk groups, artists including R.E.M., Nirvana, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have cited them as an influence.
The fourth member of the original lineup, Andy Gill, passed away in 2020.

"If it weren't for that, we wouldn't be here. Those were stepping stones, and it made our relationship closer." The reframing came in the wake of Neal appearing on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast and saying that he'd been fired from an unnamed TV show after refusing to film an intimate scene with a costar. "When I wouldn't do it, and they couldn't understand it, Hollywood just completely turned on me," he said. "They wouldn't let me be part of the show anymore. And for two years, I couldn't get a job, and I lost everything you could possibly imagine. Not just houses and material things, but your swagger, your cool, who you are, your identity, everything." He also explained what had been behind his decision. "I always had in my contracts that I wouldn't kiss another woman on screen," he said on the podcast. "My wife didn't have any problem with it. It was me, really, who had a problem. I was like, 'Yeah, I don't want to put you through it. I know we're going to start having kids, and I don't want to put my kids through it.'" The couple now share five children, whom they also mentioned in their joint interview. "If they were to see Dad kissing another woman, it would hurt them," Ruvé said. "When Neal swears on film, which he rarely does, we would tell our kids when they were younger, 'Oh, no, that's a dub, that's a voiceover. Dad did not say S-H-I-T,' because we don't swear."She also reiterated their good fortune, saying, "We cannot explain and express how blessed we are, how happy we are. Everything that's going on, talking about how Hollywood dissed Neal and whatnot — no. Everything that's happened has brought us closer to where we are now." Neal's other screen credits include TV's Band of Brothers, Arrow, Desperate Housewives, and The Flash, plus films like Minority Report and The Last Rodeo. Caleb Hearon made a name for himself in the comedy space before TikTok, but his star rose exponentially after getting exposure online.
