Abang Johari appointed new Perkim president, takes over from Dr Mahathir
KUCHING, April 24 — Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has been appointed the new president of the Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Perkim) for the term 2025-2028.
In a statement today, Abang Johari, who was the sole nominee for the position, expressed his gratitude to all Perkim members for their trust and support in nominating him to lead the organisation.
'I accept this nomination with utmost humility and wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to all Perkim members for their confidence in me to lead the organisation in the coming term,' he said.
Abang Johari also paid tribute to his predecessor, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who served as Perkim president since 2006.
'I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Tun Dr Mahathir for his dedication and service in guiding Perkim for nearly two decades,' he said.
The Premier pledged to continue Dr Mahathir's legacy and uphold the vision of Perkim's founding leaders, particularly Malaysia's first prime minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, in advancing the welfare and wellbeing of the Muslim community.
'I would also like to record my thanks to Arau MP Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who is also the outgoing Perkim vice-president, and Datuk Ustaz Mohd Nakhaei Ahmad, who have withdrawn from the nomination and expressed their support for my appointment as president,' he added.
Founded in 1960 by Tunku Abdul Rahman, Perkim's inception was to spearhead the spirit of volunteerism in Islamic welfare works.

Task force to assist non-Muslim groups
Ling says Johor government will address matters with a more systematic approach. A SPECIAL task force has been formed by Johor government to address matters affecting non-Islamic religious groups. Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the task force, co-chaired by himself and state unity, heritage and culture committee chairman K. Raven Kumar, was approved during a state executive council meeting in late April. 'The task force will focus on resolving long-standing issues faced by non-Islamic religious groups, especially in relation to reserve land status, land ownership transfers and property tax. 'Instead of addressing such matters on a case-by-case basis, as was previously done, the state government is now taking a more systematic approach through the task force,' he said in an interview. Ling, who is also MCA Youth chief, said the task force was gathering all relevant data and documents before convening in mid-June to discuss and resolve the issues. He added that the state government was open and willing to listen to the people's voices. 'Recently, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi helped iron out technical issues for the proposed SJK(C) Kuek Ho Yao. 'The construction of the school was put on hold and delayed for years due to land-related matters. 'With support from the Mentri Besar, a piece of land has been specifically marked for the school and handed over to the Federal Lands Commissioner,' he said. Ling said Onn Hafiz was open to assisting in matters related to the Chinese and Indian communities, especially regarding education, culture and religion. He said in recent years, the state granted exemptions for property tax involving Chinese independent schools including Foon Yew High School's Seri Alam campus, which was announced in January. 'The paperwork for the tax exemption has been completed and will be brought to the state executive council meeting for approval soon. 'We are committed to finding fair and practical solutions to these issues so that development and harmony can continue to flourish in the state,' he said.

Indonesia's PSI opens doors for former President Jokowi to join their leading ranks
JAKARTA (Bernama): Indonesia's Solidarity Party (PSI) has declared its readiness to welcome former president Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, into its ranks - should he choose to join the party. The party's deputy chairman, Andy Budiman, stated in a statement that PSI considers itself Jokowi's "political home' and is prepared to receive him with open arms. "PSI was founded to support Jokowi's vision and mission for Indonesia's development,' Andy said, stating that all party members continue to champion those goals. The statement came days after Jokowi indicated he favoured joining PSI rather than accepting an offer to become chairman of the Islamic-based United Development Party (PPP). Last Friday, the former president announced at his Surakarta residence that he will not join PPP, saying many candidates are better qualified and possess the capacity and competence to lead the party. Jokowi's connection with PSI is no surprise, as his youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, was appointed PSI chairman in September 2023, boosting the party's profile among young urban voters. Respect religious sensitivities, refrain from commenting on qurban
BATU PAHAT: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan has reminded all parties, including celebrities, to refrain from making statements that could touch on religious sensitivities, particularly concerning the qurban ( sacrificial) ritual. He said the sacrificial ritual in Malaysia has always adhered to Islamic rulings (syarak) and is closely monitored by the relevant authorities to ensure that all slaughtering procedures are conducted in accordance with religious and legal requirements. 'I advise everyone, be it celebrities or the general public, to be cautious when making public comments. Please avoid making statements on this issue. 'The qurban ritual has been practised for a long time without controversy, and now it is suddenly being questioned. Let's not reignite this matter,' he told reporters after officiating the 'Peduli Komuniti Madani' Carnival (KAPKOM) 2025 at Kampung Orang Asli Bumiputera Dalam in Rengit, here, today. He was responding to a recent statement made by former Miss World Malaysia 2009, Thanuja Ananthan, who questioned the practice of animal slaughter during the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations. Zulkifli further stressed that qurban should be carried out with sincerity and in full compliance with Islamic guidelines. KAPKOM aims to engage local communities, including the underprivileged, the poor, and the Orang Asli community, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI. Activities during the event included qurban rituals, animal slaughter demonstrations and the Smart Solat Workshop.
