Chinnaswamy stadium can hold 35,000 people, 2-3 lakh turned up: How Siddaramaiah explained RCB Victory Parade stampede

Indian Express04-06-2025
A day after Royal Challengers Bengaluru emerged victorious for the first time in the Men's IPL tournament, tragic scenes unfolded in Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium as 11 people died in a stampede on Wednesday, with scores more getting injured. Looking back, the signs were always there, including the all-day-long confusion on whether the victory parade would take place and whether the RCB faithful would be allowed a glimpse of their hallowed stars. In the end, the happiness and contentment of conquering the most elusive of victories was somewhat eclipsed by the feeling of a loss. What led to the stampede-like situation and what next? Here's what we know so far:
📌 The celebration: The RCB Men's team wanted to win the trophy in what many are calling the swansong tournament for team veteran Virat Kohli. They managed to clinch the title by defeating Punjab Kings in the IPL final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The team was scheduled to celebrate their victory in Bengaluru on Wednesday, arriving at the HAL Airport on a special flight in the afternoon. According to the plan, a felicitation programme took place at Vidhana Soudha, with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in attendance. Later, the team was set to participate in an open-bus victory parade that would ferry the players to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, about a kilometre away. Many people hoped to catch a glimpse of the players during this ceremony. But the team was sent in a closed bus.
The celebrations started early, with the crowd scattered in and around MG Road, Church Street and other places of Central Business District. The chants of 'Ee Sala Cup Namdu' (This time (IPL) cup is ours) and 'RCB-RCB' rang in the open skies of the central business district of the IT capital.
📌 The confusion: In the morning, the RCB handle had posted about a victory parade to be held in the evening. By the afternoon, the traffic police and the state Home Minister said that the victory parade was cancelled. G Parameshwara Rao pointed to 'security reasons'. Trying to assuage any concerns, he said that all security measures and traffic measures are in place 'to ensure there is no inconvenience to the public'. But soon, the RCB handle posted another message, saying that the victory parade would be held at 5 PM. The traffic police conceded that there was confusion about the parade, but said it had made 'preparations in case it happens'.
📌 The stampede: The crowds around the stadium had started to swell much before 5 PM. Thousands of fans gathered in front of Vidhana Soudha as well as outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. And the numbers were only rising. These eager fans had failed to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars as they were travelling in a closed bus. A stampede broke out around 4 pm when more than 15 people, including a woman, fell on the ground as the crowd rushed towards Gate 3 of the stadium. Passes were also made mandatory to enter the Chinnaswamy Stadium to attend the celebrations and eyewitnesses said many without passes also tried to enter.
📌 'Unexpected' turnout: After the tragedy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference to condole the loss of lives. He announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased, and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the tragedy.
Then, he explained what could have led to the chaos. Siddaramaiah said that the stadium has a capacity to hold about 35,000 people. But about 2-3 lakh people had gathered at the stadium and about a lakh outside Vidhan Soudha. 'We, or the Karnataka State Cricket Association, did not expect such a huge crowd,' he said.
The CM paid a visit to the injured, who have been admitted to the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals, and Vydehi Super Speciality Hospital, and later announced the state will provide them free treatment.
📌 PM's message: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives and took to social media platform X to post: 'The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery'.
Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy and former CM also said the stampede has 'left me deeply shocked' and called the loss of innocent lives 'extremely painful'. 'The primary reason for this massive tragedy is the lack of proper planning and complete failure to take precautionary measures.'
Others in the opposition also trained their guns at the ruling Congress government, questioning it for what they called a lack of proper planning.
📌 Kohli at loss of words: Just 24 hours ago, he was on the ground, overcome by emotions after having achieved what had eluded him for so long — an IPL title win. But after Wednesday's mishap, the senior cricketer took to Instagram to share the official statement of the RCB, captioning the post: 'At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted.'
The team statement also mentioned how they were 'deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents,' referring to the stampede and the resultant deaths.

Shreyas, Jitesh likely to be back for Asia Cup

Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma are likely to earn a recall to India's T20I set-up when the senior national men's selection panel meets on Tuesday to finalise the squad for the Asia Cup to be held in the UAE from September 9. Neither Shreyas nor Jitesh has featured in T20Is since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach in July 2024. Shreyas last played a T20I in December 2023, while Jitesh – the wicketkeeper-batter – made his final appearance in January 2024. Tough decision The Hindu understands the selectors and team management are aligned on including an experienced middle-order batter suited to the slower, lower conditions expected in the UAE. If Shreyas is picked, it could mean a tough call on either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh, both of whom were part of India's squad for its last T20I assignment against England in January-February. Jitesh, who played a key role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title, is expected to replace Dhruv Jurel, who was the reserve stumper to Sanju Samson during the England series. The selectors must also decide whether to include Jasprit Bumrah in the T20I squad. With Mohammed Shami unavailable, a pacer's slot is open. The debate could be whether to bring back Bumrah or give Prasidh Krishna a chance after a strong IPL campaign. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, who has recovered from sports hernia, will attend the selection meeting. His input will be vital as the selectors plan for the T20 World Cup to be held in India next year. There has been speculation about the return of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal to the T20I squad. However, the management appears inclined to stick with the core group that has excelled under Gambhir, winning 13 of 15 T20Is since his appointment. Additionally, with minimal turnaround time between formats — the Asia Cup final is on September 28 and the first Test against the West Indies begins on October 2 in Ahmedabad — the selectors are likely to keep Gill and Jaiswal fresh for the red-ball assignments.

KDA Chairman demands early implementation of SEP

Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Prof. Purushotham Bilimale has demanded that the State government implement the new proposed State Education Policy (SEP) at the earliest. In a letter written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and concerned education ministers of the state, he said that the SEP Commission had given a 'very comprehensive' education policy, in a first-of-its-kind exercise. 'If the report is implemented properly, the state's education sector will change radically over the next decade,' he said. Further, he stated that several studies have confirmed that the three-language formula forcibly imposes Hindi and does not help improve the cognitive and academic ability of students. 'In this context, the SEP report, which has recommended a two-language policy with Kannada and English for the State, is a very timely step,' Prof. Bilimale said. 'It is important to note that the commission had not ignored non-Kannada and non-English languages while recommending a two-language policy. The report states that Kannada and English languages will remain mandatory as the first or second language, and that interested students will be allowed to learn their mother tongue as a third language,' he explained, adding that this was much needed in 'today's complex linguistic environment'. 'The recommendations of the SEP are mainly based on the Constitution of India, the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, The Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015 and all aspects of the National Education Policy 1968, 1986, 1992 and 2020, among other policies and laws. This is a constitutionally sound policy and can serve as a model education policy for the country,' he said, demanding its early implementation.

Sreesanth Shares Daughter's Emotional Reaction To 2008 IPL Slapgate With Harbhajan

Last Updated: Former cricketer S Sreesanth shared an emotional moment involving his daughter and Harbhajan Singh, reflecting on the 2008 IPL incident. Former Indian fast bowler S Sreesanth recently shared an emotional moment involving his daughter and former teammate Harbhajan Singh, reflecting on the infamous 2008 IPL incident where Harbhajan had slapped him. Although the players have moved past the controversy, it has left a lasting impact, especially on Sreesanth's family. The pacer revealed that his daughter refused to greet Harbhajan when introduced, highlighting how the incident remains in public memory. Recalling the incident, on Padamjeet Sehrawat's YouTube channel, Sreesanth said: 'When I told my daughter, 'This is Bhajji pa, he's played with me', she straight away said, 'No, no, I won't say hi'. I couldn't understand why. In school, there may have been the odd conversation about it. There are different stories doing the rounds. Then we tried explaining, but she said she still won't talk to him." 'The next day, when the legends tournament was going on, we explained that he was like our elder brother. I don't think Bhajji pa did that deliberately. It happened in the spur of the moment. It was just a learning experience for both of us," he added. The altercation occurred during the first edition of the IPL after a clash between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians, with images of Sreesanth crying on the field going viral. Over the years, both players have reconciled, with Harbhajan admitting regret. Speaking recently on 'Kutti Stories with Ash", Harbhajan said, 'I want to remove that incident from my career. What transpired was wrong and I shouldn't have done what I did. I apologised 200 times… Yes, in that game we were opponents. But it shouldn't have gone to that level where we behave in such a manner… The only fault of his was that he provoked me, but that's okay actually. However, what I did was not okay. I said, 'Sorry'." 'What hurt me even after many years was when I met his daughter and I was talking to her with a lot of love and she said, 'I don't want to talk to you. You hit my father.' My heart was shattered and I was on the verge of tears. I was asking myself what is the impression I've left on her? She must be thinking of me in a poor light, right? She sees me as the guy who hit her father. I felt so bad. I still apologise to his daughter that I can't do anything. I keep telling her, 'but if there's anything I can do to make you feel better and make you think I'm not that kind of person, please tell me'. I wish when she grows up, she doesn't see me in the same light. And think her uncle will always be with her and extend any kind of support he can. That's why I want to remove that chapter," Harbhajan added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
