Sri Lankan rubber exporters press for reduced Trump tariff

Mint6 days ago
Colombo, Jul 19 (PTI) Ahead of the August 1 deadline for further negotiations on the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, the Sri Lankan rubber exporters said they faced the threat of losing the US market unless a better deal was worked out.
Kamal Silva, a spokesman for the exporters, said the tariff must be kept between 15 and 20 per cent to retain their edge over regional competitors.
'Indonesia has gained a clear advantage already as Sri Lanka with the current 30 cent tariff will find it extremely hard to do business with the US," he said.
'Even before the new tariff came, Sri Lankan exporters found it hard to compete with Indonesia. A 15 per cent tariff would be our ideal rate to be competitive in the US market," Silva said.
He said the rubber exports fetched USD 300 million annually from the US market.
Dhammika Fernando, the spokesman of the Sri Lankan Free Trade Zone Exporters Association, said Indonesia had gained a clear advantage in the new tariff structure unveiled by US President Donald Trump.
'We have been told by the government that 1600 items and services will be allowed tariff free by the US. This will be good news if it comes through," Fernando said.
A Sri Lankan government delegation is currently in the US to negotiate a trade deal.
Deputy Economic Development Minister Anil Jayantha told reporters the US and Sri Lanka were discussing 1161 items, out of which Washington offered zero tariffs for about 80 items.
In April, the US imposed a 44 per cent tariff on Sri Lanka.
The US brought the tariff down to 30 per cent on Sri Lanka in the latest letter sent by the Trump administration.
The apparel industry also said the high tariff would endanger the apparel exports by making Sri Lankan products uncompetitive in the US market.
Sri Lanka exports 3 billion dollars worth of goods, while the US sends to Sri Lanka USD 300 million worth of goods annually.

Iran Meets UK, France and Germany for Nuclear Talks

(Bloomberg) -- Iranian and European officials held nuclear talks in Istanbul on Friday as tensions simmer over Tehran's nuclear program after it was targeted by a US military strike last month. Diplomats from the Islamic Republic met with counterparts from the UK, France and Germany — the so-called E3 bloc of top European economies — at around 10:30 a.m. local time to try and ease a standoff over Iran's atomic activities. The talks come about a month after the US bombed three key nuclear sites in Iran, triggering a break in international inspections of its atomic activities and raising questions over the whereabouts of its stockpile of enriched uranium. The strike also derailed separate nuclear negotiations between the Islamic Republic and the Trump administration. The E3 helped broker a 2015 nuclear deal — known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — with Iran that imposed strict limits on Tehran's atomic work in exchange for sanctions relief. Friday's talks are important because they could delay any effort by the Europeans to 'snap back' broad United Nations sanctions that were lifted as part of that accord. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot last week announced the possibility of reimposing the sanctions by the end of August if Iran fails to reach a deal limiting its nuclear program. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that the E3 has lost any right to invoke the JCPOA's snapback mechanism, which expires in October, because it failed to meet its own obligations under the agreement after US President Donald Trump withdrew from it seven years ago. On Wednesday, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister said Tehran has 'not ruled out' withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons if the UN were to reimpose sanctions. 'That's still on the table,' Kazem Gharibabadi, who's attending the Istanbul talks, told reporters. 'I'm quite confident that if the snapback is triggered, Iran will not show more restraint in this regard,' he said. --With assistance from Patrick Sykes. (Updates lead to reflect talks have started.) Arunachal CM Pema Khandu joins Dalai Lamas spiritual gathering in Ladakh

Itanagar, Jul 25 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday joined thousands of devotees at the revered Karsha Photang in Zanskar to participate in 'Yarchos Chenmo', the great summer dharma gathering, hosted by the Karsha Monastery in Ladakh. The sacred congregation witnessed the presence of nearly 30,000 spiritual seekers who assembled under the vast Ladakhi skies to receive teachings from the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. Khandu, in a social media post described his encounter with the Dalai Lama in Ladakh as a deeply humbling and spiritually uplifting experience, highlighting the quiet power of compassion and the timeless wisdom radiated by the revered Tibetan leader. Khandu is currently on a visit to Ladakh. The revered Tibetan spiritual leader delivered a powerful discourse on key Buddhist principles, including compassion, dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths, the concept of emptiness, and the path of the Bodhisattva. 'We gathered under open skies, in the shadow of the mountains, to listen to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, whom the world rightly calls the Ocean of Peace," Khandu posted in X, sharing his reflections on the experience. He expressed gratitude for the rare spiritual experience and paid heartfelt tribute to the Dalai Lama, calling him 'Avalokiteshvara in human form, beacon of universal compassion". Earlier in the day, Khandu was also granted a private audience with the Dalai Lama at Karsha Photang, the leader's official residence in Zanskar. The chief minister described the meeting as a moment of 'deep stillness and awakening". 'To be in the presence of His Holiness is to feel the quiet power of compassion, the boundless depth of wisdom, and the warmth of a smile that holds centuries of spiritual legacy," the chief minister added. Khandu's presence at the gathering reflected Arunachal Pradesh's deep-rooted spiritual and cultural ties with the broader Himalayan Buddhist tradition. His visit also served as a reminder of the unifying power of faith and the enduring influence of the Dalai Lama in inspiring compassion, harmony, and wisdom across borders.
