Police crack betting racket while probing fake kidnapping in Greater Noida
A kidnapping complaint in Rajasthan has helped police uncover a massive
illegal cricket betting operation
linked to Dubai and Thailand.
It all started on June 12, when Subhash Chandra from Alwar reported that his 22-year-old son Bhim Singh and 25-year-old nephew Narayan had been kidnapped. He said the kidnappers demanded ₹7 lakh for their release.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Saad Miya Khan launched an investigation. Using electronic surveillance and local intelligence, the police traced a lead to White Orchid Apartments in Gaur City, Greater Noida. Although Bhim and Narayan weren't found there, police discovered something unexpected — a betting racket.
Inside the flat, four young men connected to Bhim were caught. They had two laptops, many mobile phones, fake SIM cards, and forged identity documents. When the police questioned them strictly, they admitted they were running an illegal betting operation using an app called Rudra Cric Live.
The trail then led to another flat on the 18th floor of Radha Sky Garden in Greater Noida. There, police found Bhim, Narayan, and two others named Himanshu and Sukhdev. All four confessed they were placing live bets on cricket matches — on things like runs, wickets, and results — through the same app.

In total, eight people aged between 19 and 31 were arrested from the two flats for running and being involved in the illegal betting racket.
The police said the betting business was highly organised. Users joined through WhatsApp numbers shared in the app. Each user got a unique ID. Every day, about ₹30 lakh was made in bets, and the money was sent to the main operators sitting in Thailand and Dubai.
The group also used social media influencers to promote their betting app, even though it was banned in India. The app would let users win in the beginning to encourage them to place bigger bets — and eventually lose money.
Kasna police station SHO Dharmendra Shukla said they have identified about 20 such betting branches in Delhi-NCR. So far, three have been shut down, and the investigation continues.
Police are also planning to send notices to the social media influencers who promoted the app. They are now checking the phones, laptops, and bank records of those arrested to understand how big the network is. The illegal betting operation is believed to have been running for about six months.
But what about the kidnapping?
Turns out, it was fake. Bhim and Narayan had lost around ₹10 lakh from the betting funds. To hide this, they faked their own kidnapping to get money from their families. Their plan worked for a while — the family even paid some money and came to Noida to help the police find them.
In the end, the kidnapping complaint turned out to be a trick, but it helped police crack a huge betting racket.

When I warned her, she slapped me," Suman said, adding that it was then that he hit back.

Cops launch statewide drive to prevent crimes during Rath Yatra in Puri
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Odisha police on Monday launched a statewide crackdown against criminals to ensure the Rath Yatra in Puri on June 27 passes off peacefully. The operation, while primarily focused on Puri, would extend across the state to foil potential plans of outside criminals during the festival that will draw lakhs of tourists, including VIPs from the country and abroad. "We directed DCPs of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, and SPs of all districts to launch the special anti-criminal drive from Sunday evening. They have been instructed to remain particularly vigilant about criminals from outside Puri and Odisha who might attempt to target the massive gathering," DGP Y B Khurania told TOI. The DGP said the coordinated statewide crackdown aims to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all visitors during Rath Yatra. "Safety and security of pilgrims is our utmost responsibility. State police headquarters will monitor the implementation of the enforcement drive, whose main objective is to help maintain peace, and law and order across the state in general and Puri in particular during the festival," Khurania said. Police officers said the operation involves multiple police units, including special task forces and intelligence teams. Police are also implementing advanced surveillance systems and deploying additional personnel to manage the arrival of domestic and international visitors. Police sources said the special drive's focus is to prevent property offences like theft, burglary, robbery and snatching. All police stations have been asked to execute pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and arrest offenders on the run in several cases. Besides, police officers have been asked to secure bond of good conduct from habitual offenders, who would pledge not to indulge in any criminal activities during the festival. The DGP highlighted that AI-enabled CCTV systems being installed throughout Puri would assist in crime prevention. While AI cameras were used during last year's Rath Yatra, this year's deployment is more extensive. "We are in the process of installing 300 advanced cameras equipped with AI technology for security, crowd control and traffic management," Khurania said. SP (Puri) Vinit Agrawal said, "Given the possible participation of VIPs, including Union ministers and chief ministers of several NDA-ruled states, we are leaving no stone unturned in our security arrangements."

Woman duped of 7L over fake online traffic challan
1 2 3 Pune: A woman (33) from Ambegaon Pathar lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday, stating that online fraudsters cheated her of Rs 7 lakh on May 21 by siphoning off money from her bank account through a fake online traffic challan. The Ambegaon police reported that the woman owned a scooter and thought she might have breached a traffic rule. The victim, who works as clerical staff with a private company, opened the message embedded with a link. The fraudsters sent the message with the title 'RTO Traffic Challan', mentioning a fine of Rs 500. Senior inspector Sharad Zine of Ambegaon police told TOI, "The woman ended up downloading remote access software. Unknowingly, she also filled out a form with her personal and banking details as the software prompted her to do so. She just followed all the steps as directed by the software." "Once she filled out the form and unknowingly shared the PIN of the software online, the suspects took control of her phone and siphoned off money from her bank account using the details she filled in the form. Earlier, on May 27, a third-year architecture degree course student (22) from a prominent college in Karvenagar lost Rs 2.02 lakh to cyber crooks between May 17 and 18 after she received a bogus traffic challan message embedded with a link to remote access software. Her friend received an "RTO challan" of Rs 2,000 for a traffic rule violation on May 17. The challan did not open on the phone of the victim's friend. She then forwarded it to the victim, who used the two-wheeler on May 16. The student thought she might have breached a traffic rule while driving the scooter, clicked on the embedded link, and ended up losing Rs 2.02 lakhs.
