Bengaluru: A Rapido bike-taxi captain was arrested here Monday on charges of slapping a woman rider, who had objected to his alleged rash riding. The accused, though, alleged it was the woman who had attacked him first.
A video clip, recorded by a passerby on his mobile, shows the two arguing and then the captain slapping the woman, who loses her balance and is knocked down on the road. Later, though, police collected CCTV footage from a nearby building, which showed the woman attacking the bike captain first.
The accused bike captain has been identified as S Suman, 28, a resident of Srinivasnagar. He was arrested by Jayanagar police based on the complaint filed by Priya (name changed), the pillion rider.
Suman has been charged under multiple sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Speaking to TOI, Priya explained the incident had taken place on the morning of June 13. While on her way from BTM Layout II Stage to her workplace in Jayanagar III Block, Priya had booked a Rapido bike, and Suman was assigned the ride. However, according to Priya, the ride was rough as Suman was rash, violating traffic rules, jumping signals at will, and even taking a detour.

"Several times I requested him to slow down and follow the route shown in the map, but he wouldn't budge. Upon reaching Jayanagar III Block, I decided to end the ride, with my office still around 200 metres away," she said.
Priya added that as she got off the bike, Suman was got into an argument with her for ending the ride prematurely. "When I countered him, he suddenly slapped me hard," Priya said. "In a bid to protect myself, I too attacked him."
Suman later told the police it was Priya who hit him first, and that made him lose his cool.
"Since there was a huge traffic congestion on the main roads, I took the inner lanes, but the woman kept yelling and abusing me for taking a different route. On reaching Jayanagar III Block, when she abused me yet again, I lost my cool. She spoke ill about my parents. When I warned her, she slapped me," Suman said, adding that it was then that he hit back.

Rapido rider booked for slapping woman

A case has been registered against a Rapido bike taxi rider who was caught on camera allegedly slapping a woman passenger in Jayanagar area of Bengaluru after an argument between them over rash driving, police said on Monday. The incident occurred on June 13 when the woman, who works as a saleswoman at a jewellery shop in Jayanagar, was on her way to her workplace, they added. Police said the confrontation over rash driving escalated into an argument and the driver allegedly slapped the woman hard enough to knock her to the ground. However, the driver, Suhas, later posted a video in which the woman allegedly hit the driver before the slap was captured in the previous footage. A case was registered against the accused bike taxi rider on Monday under sections 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the BNS, police said. 'She was speaking rudely from the beginning. I took a shortcut through Jayanagar to save her time, but she kept questioning me and asked what I had studied and whether I knew how to drive,' Suhas said. He added that the situation escalated after he stopped about 100 metres from her office due to a blocked road. When she demanded the fare, he quoted ₹77, but said she responded by striking him with a tiffin box, he said. 'I held my patience as much as I could,' he said, claiming that after being hit twice and shouted at, he retaliated. 'I know we shouldn't hit women. But after she hit me twice and shouted, I hit her once.' Suhas also admitted to telling her to 'go back to your country,' though he clarified that he meant state and was not fluent in English. He said he attempted to report the incident to the store manager nearby but couldn't locate them. 'I explained to whoever was there that she raised her hand at me first,' Suhas said. The woman later approached Jayanagar police station and lodged a complaint. She alleged that the driver not only drove recklessly from BTM Layout to Jayanagar 3rd Block but also used abusive language and assaulted her in public when she questioned his driving.

Two-time World Series champ takes bold stand against Donald Trump's immigration policy amid California protests

Kike Hernandez lashes out at Trump's 'violating' immigration stance (Getty Images) As protests continue to surge across California in response to the controversial immigration crackdowns, Los Angeles Dodgers veteran Kiké Hernández has stepped forward with a powerful message. In a heartfelt statement, the Puerto Rican-born baseball star criticized Donald Trump's handling of the situation, expressing solidarity with immigrant communities facing what he described as ongoing 'violation' and 'abuse.' Donald Trump's immigration crackdown blasted by MLB star as 'abuse' of power Over the past two weeks, Trump's administration has drawn heavy backlash for deploying masked federal agents across California, arresting and deporting individuals without due process. The sweeping arrests sparked an outpouring of protests statewide. Rather than de-escalating tensions, Trump doubled down by sending the National Guard—bypassing California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was neither informed nor consulted about the action. Among the many speaking out, Hernández has emerged as one of the first high-profile athletes to directly address the growing crisis. 'I may not be born and raised here, but this city adopted me as one of their own. I am so sad and enraged by everything that is happening in the country and in our city,' he shared. 'Los Angeles and Dodger fans have welcomed me, supported me, and shown me nothing but kindness and love. This is my second home.' His frustration didn't end there. In an unfiltered show of support for the immigrant community, he added, 'I cannot tolerate watching our community continue to be violated, attacked, abused, and torn apart. All people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, and their human rights. I stand with you #CityOfImmigrants.' Just two months earlier, Hernández and his teammates had visited the White House following their World Series win. That visit took a strange turn when Trump asked star pitcher Shohei Ohtani to pose with the Declaration of Independence—an odd moment that now feels more surreal given the tense political backdrop. Meanwhile, Governor Gavin Newsom didn't hold back when voicing concern over Trump's recent behavior. Speaking with FOX News, Newsom stated, 'He is not the same person that I dealt with just four years ago. He is incapable of even a train of thought. He's making things up and he's putting people lives at risk.' As tensions between California's leadership and the federal government escalate, Trump remains defiant. 'We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California,' he declared. With the nation watching closely, voices like Hernández's are increasingly important in amplifying the concerns of communities that feel unheard and unprotected.
