Houthi-held Pinoy seafarers OK, allowed to call home
In an interview Wednesday, DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the Houthis have allowed the seafarers to remain in touch with their loved ones.
The seafarers are reportedly in good condition.
'Pinapayagan sila tumawag, (They are allowed to call,) and I hope it stays that way, and we hope again for their safe and secure release,' said Cacdac.
He said the DMW is currently working with the Department of Foreign Affairs, foreign governments, and the families of the seafarers in terms of checking on the captives' welfare and their safe release.
'We are in touch with the families, so this is the number one directive of the President for the DMW: take care of the families, support them. Indeed we have. We have been handholding them through these difficult times,' he said.
'I have made personal visits to most of them, and we will do these continuing rounds of home visitations to ensure them of governmental support,' he added.
The DMW head shared that the families asked for their help in providing regular updates regarding the seafarers.
'That's exactly what we do on a periodic basis. We meet virtually or (conduct) personal home visits,' Cacdac said.
On Monday, the Houthis released footage of the missing crewmen, claiming they were 'rescued,' following the group's attack on the ship early July.
It was confirmed later on that nine Filipino seafarers were among those being held captive by the Yemeni-based rebels.

PSA warns vs. fake CENOMAR online
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) warned the public of the so-called temporary certificate of no marriage (CENOMAR) that is being offered online. According to Emil Sumangil's report in '24 Oras' on Wednesday, the PSA clarified that there is no such thing as a temporary CENOMAR. 'Once and for all, hindi nawawala yung marriage. So halimbawa, gusto mo magpakasal at mayroon ka ng previous marriage, siguro ang maganda nilang tignan ay annulment of marriage,' said Emilio Querubin Jr., chief of PSA Civil Register Management Division. (Once and for all, marriage will never cease. So for example, if you want to get married again, you can consider getting an annulment of marriage.) Overseas Filipino worker 'Cynthia' has been separated from her husband since 2012. As someone working abroad, the temporary CENOMARs being offered online caught her attention. However, the PSA explained that CENOMAR serves as proof that a person is single or has no record of marriage in the Philippines. The agency warned that such fake documents can easily be validated by embassies. 'Once na matingnan po 'yun at mag-request yung end user ng kopya, iko-compare doon sa binigay sa kanila, mahuli-huli at mahuli-mahuli sila kasi yung marriage hindi naman nawawala sa database ng PSA,' said Querubin. (Once it's checked and the end user requested for a copy, they will compare it with the one they have. So you can still be caught because marriages will remain in PSA's database.) Indigenous art, Baybayin training held in Limasawa, So. Leyte
The Limasawa Pot Replica Painting and Baybayin Lettering Training is a five-day training geared at 'promoting and preserving Filipino cultural heritage by engaging participants in creative activities that highlight traditional practices.' According to a post of the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte, the initiative encourages appreciation for 'indigenous art forms and the pre-colonial script of the Philippines.' Local youth and community members took part in the meaningful cultural education, which does not only foster artistic skills but also 'deepens understanding of the province's identity and historical significance.' The Provincial Government of Southern Leyte pointed out that the program is part of its continuing efforts to 'strengthen cultural pride and creative expression among Southern Leyteños.' The training started officially on July 15, 2025, at the Limasawa Municipal Hall, and will wrap up on July 19, 2025. The five-day cultural activity is a joint initiative of the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte, the Municipality of Limasawa, and the Provincial Tourism Office, in partnership with the Provincial Culture and Arts Council, featuring presentations by Dr. Rolando Borrinaga, an esteemed historian and professor from the University of the Philippines. Further, it was learned that participants were introduced to the cultural significance of the Limasawa Pot, including the historical context of the Bakalag (human sacrifice) ritual artifacts, and the Baybayin pre-colonial writing system. The training is led by Engr. Gershon Destora, member of the Provincial Culture and Arts and Heritage Council, and supported by Nedgar Garvez, Provincial Tourism Office head.
