Rising cost of living delays youth marriages, says deputy minister
She cited a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report stating that nearly one in five adults across 14 countries may not achieve their desired family size due to financial constraints.
'Of this group, 39 per cent cited financial constraints as the main barrier, including the cost of living, childcare, housing, and job insecurity. This is where our responsibility lies, to listen, understand, and act,' she said during the 2025 World Population Day celebration.
To address the issue, the government has introduced initiatives such as maternity and paternity leave, childcare subsidies, and financial aid for low-income families.
Awareness programmes on reproductive and family health are also being conducted.
Malaysia's fertility rate has declined to 1.7 children per woman, below the replacement level of 2.1.
Noraini noted that only 93,500 births were recorded in the first quarter of 2025, an 11 per cent drop compared to the previous year.
'These numbers are not just statistics; they represent a growing urgency for effective policies, support systems, and public awareness,' she said.
The government is implementing the Fertility Treatment Aid and Infertility Advocacy Programme (BuAI), aiming to assist 30,000 couples by 2025.
Additional programmes like PEKERTI, SMARTSTART, and Kafe\@TEEN are also being expanded to promote family planning and reproductive health.
This year's World Population Day celebration has been extended to the state level, engaging over 5,000 participants.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will roll out three key follow-up actions — an exporter outreach programme, regulatory reform and a nationwide supply chain mapping initiative — following the recent tariff renegotiation agreement with the United States which reduced tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25 per cent to 19 per cent. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the agreement, effective Aug 1, was achieved after "months of intense but thorough as well as methodical negotiations". "Most importantly, we achieved this without conceding on our red lines in key areas," he said in his keynote address at The Edge Malaysia Centurion Club Awards 2025 here today. Tengku Zafrul said those red lines included foreign equity limits in strategic sectors, legal safeguards in digital companies, halal standards and many other areas. But the key point, he added, is that the negotiation package was a all-of-nation offer, not just the government, but all (Malaysians and Malaysian companies). With the tariff deal in effect, Tengku Zafrul said the government is focusing on three key areas, starting with an outreach programme to support industry players and exporters. "Some of you in this room may be impacted, but again we will engage the whole exporters' ecosystem — not just the multinationals, but all the small and medium enterprises that are supporting the major exporters," he said. Secondly, he said the government aims to accelerate industrial reforms by cutting bureaucracy and reviewing regulations to eliminate overlaps, outdated provisions and irrelevant processes. "Thirdly, we need to strengthen the resilience of our supply chain by fortifying specific industries' role in the global supply chain," he said. Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia is making good progress on a supply chain mapping project, which aims to identify every player involved in the economic activities of key industrial sectors. Meanwhile, he said Malaysia's mid-cap companies — defined as listed companies with a market capitalisation of between RM100 million and RM1 billion — remain critical to the country's growth ambition under the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. "For me and for our ministry, we view this award such as Centurion as one of the private sector's contributions to Malaysia's journey towards becoming a high-income, sustainable and globally competitive nation. "As of March 31, there are 519 such Centurions. And this speaks volumes about the vibrancy of Malaysia's mid-cap sector — a sector that is equally critical to our national economic aspirations," he said.

Anwar calls for deeper appreciation of Asian history, free from colonial narratives

He said that the contributions of Tipu Sultan and his father Haider Ali, as defenders against British colonial expansion, exemplified the importance of understanding history from the perspective of local and regional leaders rather than solely from Western accounts. "History is not necessarily very kind, one of our scholars Syed Hussein Alatas emphasised the need to reconstruct history because history cannot be written only by the winners or from the perspective of the colonial rulers," he said during the launch of the "More Than A Day As A Tiger" exhibition at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, here on Tuesday (Aug 5) night. Also present were the Prime Minister's wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Albukhary Foundation chairman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary; Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai and his spouse, as well as representatives from embassies and consulates. Anwar noted that Malaysian history, like that of many others, is often written from the perspective of the British, essentially reflecting Western colonial rule. Anwar also shared his personal experience visiting Mysore before taking office, recalling his admiration for Tipu Sultan's modest palace and his protection of Hindu temples, including the ancient temple there. He also praised Tipu Sultan's foresight in mastering military technology to confront colonial powers, citing the Mysore Sultanate's renowned cannons and firearms that had shocked the British in the early wars. "It is not just an ordinary exhibition, but to showcase the history of India and the Muslim world, and the history of the anti-colonial struggle against colonial rule, in this particular case, the British rule. "His diplomatic skills with the few sultanates, Muslims and Hindus in India and his venture into international diplomacy, particularly in persuading the French forces to support his struggle against the British," he said. BANGKOK: (Bernama) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's (pic) success in mediating a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, which resulted in an immediate halt to armed clashes along their disputed border, was hailed as a major diplomatic victory. The courageous and decisive move by the Malaysian premier has not only strengthened his position as a political leader and effective Asean Chair, but also elevated the regional bloc's profile on the global stage. Veteran Thai journalist and regional affairs commentator Kavi Chongkittavorn said when tensions escalated into artillery exchanges between the two neighbouring countries last month, Anwar seized the moment in his capacity as Asean Chair and emerged as a statesman on the regional stage. In an article titled "Four Wins For Asean Chair Anwar" published on Thai PBS World, Kavi said the Malaysian Prime Minister scored four wins with his decisive step to help de-escalate the ongoing tension between the two neighbours. The first win he noted was that Anwar, leveraging his position as Asean Chair, stepped up to act as a mediator, projecting himself as Southeast Asia's peacemaker. He attributed the second win to Anwar's ability to turn the crisis into an opportunity to boost Asean's centrality and relevance. "Major powers often ridicule Asean as a talk shop without action.
