Two Kerala nuns granted bail in Chhattisgarh ‘conversion, trafficking' case
In a significant update in the case involving the arrest of two Kerala nuns, a special court in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, on Saturday granted bail to three persons, including the two nuns, who were booked on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. During the bail hearing on Friday, defence lawyer said that the prosecution had not asked for police custody of the three people, and the alleged victims had been sent back home.(HT Photo) Amrito Das, the lawyer for the nuns, said, 'The judge granted bail observing there was no need to keep them in custody.' Talking to PTI, petitioner's advocate B Gopakumar also said some bail conditions were also put up, including that, "they will not be able to go abroad, they will have to surrender the passport, they should not influence the witness." The process of furnishing the bail is now being done, which will take 1-2 hours. Their releasing order is expected to be received in the second half of the day, he said further. What is the case? In Kerala, the state party chief Rajeev Chandrashekhar said that the nuns were arrested based on a 'misunderstanding.' From the ruling side, Chhattisgarh CM Visnu Deo Sai accused the opposition of politicising the matter and interfering with a police investigation in the case. In a social media post, Sai said that the case appears to be one of human trafficking. 'Three daughters of Narayanpur were promised nursing training and jobs. A person from Narayanpur handed them over to two nuns at Durg station, who were taking them to Agra,' he added further.

A Bangladeshi model was arrested in Kolkata this week for allegedly using fake documents. Identified as Shanta Paul, the woman used her documents to jointly purchase properties in the southern part of the city along with her live-in partner, reported PTI, citing officials. She was arrested with a fake Aadhaar card and ration card, and the officials are currently verifying the details of the property transaction. Pal allegedly arrived in Kolkata in 2023 and entered into a 'digital marriage" with the man, who is a resident of Andhra Pradesh. While she came to Kolkata with her Bangladeshi passport, she also brought her friend and alleged partner, Ashraf, with her. The man is a merchant navy officer. 'The duo rented an apartment in Park Street and later moved to Golf Green, where they began living together. Shanta reportedly kept Ashraf's passport in her possession. With the help of a local agent she allegedly forged multiple Indian identity documents, including ration card, Aadhaar card, voter ID, and PAN card," reported PTI citing an official. She also got a fake Aadhaar card, which identified her as a resident of Gopalpur, Barshul in Burdwan. 'Using both her and Ashraf's documents, they allegedly purchased properties in Kolkata," police said. Further inquiries revealed that Shanta had represented Bangladesh at the Indo-Bangla Beauty Pageant in 2016, and later, in 2019, she was crowned Miss Asia Global. 'Following her success in modelling, she began her acting career before eventually joining a Bangladeshi airline," the police said. Revenue official held for taking Rs 50,000 bribe in Ahilyanagar
Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 2 (PTI) Two persons, including a revenue official, have been arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a man by threatening to register a case against him for transporting minerals illegally in Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district, an official said on Saturday. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday caught Satish Rakhmaji Dharam (40), a revenue official, and Akshay Subhash Ghorpade (27) while accepting a bribe, the official said. He said that the complainant alleged he had collected sand from a river using a JCB and tractor for the construction of a house.
