Two Kerala nuns granted bail in Chhattisgarh ‘conversion, trafficking' case
Amrito Das, the lawyer for the nuns, said, 'The judge granted bail observing there was no need to keep them in custody.'
Earlier, the principal district and session Judge (NIA court), Sirajuddin Qureshi, had reserved the order on their bail pleas after a hearing on Friday. Conditional bail was granted to three people in the case, defence lawyer Amrito Das said, according to a report by PTI.
Talking to PTI, petitioner's advocate B Gopakumar also said some bail conditions were also put up, including that, "they will not be able to go abroad, they will have to surrender the passport, they should not influence the witness."
The process of furnishing the bail is now being done, which will take 1-2 hours. Their releasing order is expected to be received in the second half of the day, he said further.
What is the case?
Two Catholic nuns from Kerala, Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis, were arrested along with Sukaman Mandavi at the Durg railway station on July 25. This was done after a complaint was lodged by a local Bajrang Dal functionary accusing them of forcibly converting three young tribal women from Narayanpur and trafficking them.
During the bail hearing on Friday, defence lawyer Das said that the prosecution had not asked for police custody of the three people, and the alleged victims had been sent back to their homes.

Following the bail hearing on Friday, Das had said that the prosecution had not asked for the trio's custody for interrogation, and the alleged victims had been sent back to their homes. He also pointed out that the alleged victims are all adults practising Christianity.
On Friday, the Public Prosecutor Dauram Chandravanshi opposed the bail application, citing that the case is still in the early stages of investigation.
Political row over Kerala nuns case
Meanwhile, the arrest also sparked a political row with Congress and CPI(M) slamming the move. In Kerala, the state party chief Rajeev Chandrashekhar said that the nuns were arrested based on a 'misunderstanding.'
From the ruling side, Chhattisgarh CM Visnu Deo Sai accused the opposition of politicising the matter and interfering with a police investigation in the case. In a social media post, Sai said that the case appears to be one of human trafficking. 'Three daughters of Narayanpur were promised nursing training and jobs. A person from Narayanpur handed them over to two nuns at Durg station, who were taking them to Agra,' he added further.

Dharmasthala mass burial: SIT recovers fresh skeleton remains set, saree pieces from spot 11 during exhumation process
After the human skeleton remains were found at spot 6 on the third day of the excavation process, the SIT has discovered another set of it comprising a skull besides saree pieces from spot 11 while investigating the alleged mass burials near the Nethravathi river in Dharmasthala on 4 August, according to HT. This came after a complaint from a person who had earlier pointed out numerous probable burial grounds. The SIT had thought to start digging at the 11th spot on Monday but when they received the complainant's request, it focussed on different area and the digging at the spot 11 carried on, resulting into finding of human remains. 'The digging at this spot was already planned for Monday, but we adjusted our sequence of operations based on a request from the complainant,' HT quoted a SIT officer as saying. The human remains discovered first on July 31 have been sent for forensic assessment. As of now, 10 places have been looked into while the probe continues. The efforts to exhume from spot 7 to 11 couldn't be successful and a few personnel got minor injuries during the operation, according to the police. The case arises from a former sanitation worker's allegations, who mentioned he was directed to bury several bodies near the river consisting women and girls whom he says were sexually abused, between 1995 and 2014. He gave a statement which was formally documented in front of a magistrate related to the claims. An official complaint was registered on 3 July, followed by a First Information Report (FIR) a day later. The SIT started its field examination on 11 July and is in progress to detect the recovered remains and assess whether more burial sites are present besides the ones already labelled. Meanwhile, the case has led to criticism from different sections of the Jain community. Sri Gunadhar Nandi Maharaj of Navagraha Teertha in Hubballi raised an issue over alleged defamatory remarks being spread on social media that connect Jain rulers to the alleged crimes. He said, "Using the Dharmasthala case as a pretext, miscreants have started maligning the legacy of Jain rulers by accusing them of exploiting women. This is not only baseless but deeply hurtful. There is no record of atrocities by Jain kings in any inscription or historical document. We are being vilified without cause.' He has requested the Karnataka government to take act against those involved in circulating it, adding Jain leaders from across the state will get together in Varur to file their protest on August 10.

UP: Man convicted for 1976 theft after he confesses to crime in court
Jhansi (UP), Aug 5 (PTI) Nearly 50 years after a theft at a cooperative society here, the last surviving accused, now a frail 68-year-old man, has been found guilty — not through a lengthy trial but after his confession in court. The case, which dates back to March 1976, stretched on for over 49 years with countless hearings, bureaucratic delays and the deaths of two co-accused during the trial. But it was only last Saturday that Kanhaiya Lal, standing in the dock of the chief judicial magistrate's court here, admitted to his role in the crime. According to prosecution officer Akhilesh Kumar Maurya, the case was filed on March 31, 1976, by Bihari Lal Gautam, then secretary of the Large Scale Cooperative Society (LSS) in Tahrauli. The complainant alleged that on March 27, 1976, Kanhaiya Lal, then a Class IV employee, stole an official receipt book and a wristwatch worth Rs 150 from the office. Lal forged signatures in the receipt book and misappropriated over Rs 14,000 from society members. Two other men, Laxmi Prasad and Raghunath, were accused of issuing forged receipts in their own names and embezzling funds, Maurya said. He said all three were arrested shortly after but were later granted bail. What followed was an extraordinary judicial delay that stretched nearly five decades. Over the years, the slow wheels of justice saw hearings postponed, files changing hands, and the death of Laxmi Prasad and Raghunath. The case, State vs Kanhaiya Lal, finally saw formal charges framed against the primary accused on December 23, 2022. On Saturday, during one of the routine hearings, Lal, now a resident of Sharmafem Road, Hazira in Gwalior, confessed to the crime before Chief Judicial Magistrate Munna Lal, Maurya said. 'Kanhaiya Lal told the court he wished to confess due to his deteriorating health and old age," the lawyer said. He said the court accepted Lal's plea and sentenced him under Indian Penal Code sections 380 (theft), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant), 467 (forgery of valuable securities, wills, and other specified documents), 468 (forgery for cheating), 457 (house breaking), and 120B (criminal conspiracy). Since Lal already spent two separate terms of three months each in jail during the trial period, the court considered it as sufficient custodial punishment. In addition, he was fined Rs 300 under each section and Rs 500 under one. In case of failure to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional three days of imprisonment, according to the prosecutor.
