Shooting Star: Eight-year-old archer on her National Archery Championship wins
While many watched series like Ramayana and Mahabharata and films like Bahubali for mere entertainment, Aanya Verma, an eight-year-old took it as inspiration to step into the world of sports – archery. For Verma, archery isn't just a sport, but an ambition rooted in passion from the early age of five when the characters of Rama and Arjuna fascinated her. 'It was actually my father's dream to pursue archery but due to responsibilities, he couldn't continue. But when I watched Mahabharata, Ramayana and Bahubali, it deeply inspired me and gave me the push to start learning archery myself,' shares Verma, who now has gold and silver medals [in the Recurve Ranking Round and Recurve Elimination Round, respectively] from the U10 National Archery Championship recently held in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, under her belt. Reflecting on her recent achievement she confidently says, 'I'm very happy with my performance. My parents and teachers were extremely proud and happy too, and that means a lot to me. I'm more motivated now.'
Her journey was not easy with her days mostly occupied with studies and disciplined practice sessions. 'I start my day early with exercises that support my archery training. Then, I go to school. During the weekends I practise archery,' she explains. Beginning with competing in and acing qualifying games, she earned her position in the national competition with a national level record. 'I first participated in the trials [held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium], where I scored 326 out of 360. Based on my performance, I was selected to represent Karnataka at the national level,' she confides.

New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): The 21st edition of the Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament was officially inaugurated in the national capital, marking a significant occasion in the Indian chess calendar. Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma praised India's up-and-coming chess players at the event and offered his best wishes to the young players. Minister Verma said at the inauguration, 'The first Grandmaster Delhi Chess Tournament has been inaugurated. I convey my best wishes to all the children. India is very proud of the achievements of all our children, whether it is our Gukesh (Dommaraju) or Vaishali (Rameshbabu).' He further praised the organisers' and the chess fraternity's efforts in nurturing young talent and bringing the game to such a prominent stage. 'Many congratulations to all, and I convey my best wishes to the Federation and the Association for organising such a good tournament here at such a good level,' he added. With a record prize pool of Rs 1.21 crore, the Delhi International Open Grandmasters chess tournament is all set for its 21st edition from June 7 to 14 at Tivoli Gardens, Chattarpur, New Delhi. A marquee calendar event on the FIDE World Championship Circuit, the tournament has played a pivotal role in shaping the rise of India's chess stars, including past winners Arjun Erigaisi and Aravindh Chithambaram, R Praggnanandhaa, and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, who earned his final GM norm here to become a Grandmaster. Organised under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation, the Delhi GM Open has grown into the largest classical-format chess tournament in Asia by participation. This year, the Delhi GM Open will host over 2,500 players from over 15 countries, including 20 Grandmasters, competing across three rating-based categories. The prize pool marks a 168 per cent increase from last year's edition. Category A has a Rs 51 lakh prize pool and is open to internationally rated players. Categories B and C, for players rated below 1900 and 1700, respectively, will offer Rs 35 lakh each. All matches will follow FIDE rules and the FIDE Swiss System format, with 10 rounds in every section. Category A games will follow a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one, with the top three prizes set at Rs7,00,000, Rs6,00,000, and Rs5,00,000 respectively. The top ten finishers in this category will each receive Rs 1,00,000 or more, while special prizes of Rs 1,00,000 each will be awarded to the Best Female Player and Best Foreign Player. Category B and C games will follow a 60-minute-plus-30-second time limit and 30-minute-plus-30-second formats, respectively. Entry is free for Grandmasters, International Masters, Women Grandmasters, and Women International Masters. (ANI)

‘When did BCCI turn weathermen?' West Bengal sports minister fumes as IPL final shifts to Ahmedabad
West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in 'cheap politics' following the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) decision to relocate an IPL playoff match and the final away from Kolkata's Eden Gardens. Addressing a press conference along with Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, Biswas expressed displeasure over the revised schedule, which he said has 'deprived' Kolkata of hosting the IPL final. The final has been shifted to Ahmedabad, while the Mullanpur Stadium in Punjab will host one playoff match. Biswas also refuted claims of law and order issues or adverse weather conditions as reasons for the shift, calling them 'lame excuses' He added, '100 percent of matches in Kolkata have been played without a single incident.' Commissioner Verma said, 'Nine matches were scheduled to be played in Kolkata. A post on X pointed out that the match has been shifted due to law and order issues. As Commissioner of Police, I am here to say that seven matches have been played here, no incident has been reported. These matches saw a footfall of more than 60,000.' Verma claimed that neither the general public nor organizers had raised any concerns about law and order. He also noted that the BCCI's official communication did not cite law and order as a reason for the change, suggesting 'there could be another intention'. He recalled one instance during Ram Navami when a match date was rescheduled—from May 6 to May 8—so it could be played in Kolkata. 'It shows there is no problem related to law and order in the city,' he said. Biswas pointed to discrepancies between the reasons cited by a BJP leader and the BCCI. 'BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar (posted on X) that the matches have been shifted due to law and order problems. The BCCI and IPL's governing body have claimed that a new venue for the playoff match and final has been decided based on the weather's condition. Who is telling the truth – BJP or BCCI? It is totally a politically motivated decision,' he said. Biswas further challenged the weather-related justification, presenting documents indicating that specific weather forecasts for Kolkata between May 20-30 would only be available after May 14, and forecasts for June 1-4 only after May 26. 'No forecast has been issued for the first week of June in 2025 in the public domain. Since when did the BCCI become a weather expert?' The playoff match is scheduled for June 1, and the final on June 3. 'We register our protest. The CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal) should have raised their voice against it,' Biswas said, adding, 'It is the IPL's rule that last year's champions' home ground will host the final. But now there is an unwritten rule that the finals will be played in Ahmedabad. In the last four years, the finals have been played at the Ahmedabad stadium thrice.'
