00s pop icon reveals how crystal meth addiction 'almost killed' him

Metro4 days ago
S Club 7's Jon Lee has opened up about his past struggles with drugs and how crystal meth 'almost killed' him.
The pop star rose to prominence in 1998 when the band was formed by ex-Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller, also comprising Tina Barrett, Paul Cattermole, Bradley McIntosh, Jo O'Meara, Hannah Spearritt, and Rachel Stevens.
Lee rejoined the pop group for smaller reunions in the 2010s, including the 2023 arena tour, which took place without Spearritt, who left when Cattermole died of heart failure.
In a new interview, the 43-year-old singer has admitted he once spent £250 per week on crystal meth, a habit that began long after S Club's heyday.
It also led to him being sectioned in 2019.
'I didn't even recognise myself at that time,' he recalled. 'Sometimes, in the midst of one of the psychotic episodes where I'd be smashing my flat up with a hammer, I'd catch sight of myself in the mirror and say, 'What the f**k?''
Crystal meth, a highly addictive recreational and performance-enhancing drug, can boost energy levels and confidence in the short term, but its longer-term health impacts can be devastating, such as serious depression, anxiety, memory loss, aggression, and hallucinations.
On how it took over his life, Lee reflected to MailOnline: 'I'd have a moment of lucidity, thinking, 'I was a successful young man; I had a brilliant career, incredible life. What am I doing?''
There were points when he found himself with 'holes in the walls around [him]' and 'cuts all over [his] knuckles', as well as a 'swollen eye' from punching himself in the head.
Lee would sleep with a hammer underneath his bed, once breaking down his bathroom door out of paranoia after hallucinations convinced him there were other people in his apartment.
'I didn't look anything like Jon from S Club, or what people would expect Jon from S Club to look like,' he admitted, having also shaved his head in his thirties.
His addiction struggles came to a head when concerned neighbours called police, after which the Reach hitmaker was sectioned, having been transported to a clinic via ambulance.
Acknowledging that he was a 'danger to [himself]', he said someone would sit outside his room, and he had to leave the door open.
Lee, who also took the party drug GHB, which is a type of liquid ecstasy, now has immense 'regret' for what his family went through during that period.
'I'm not sure how I'm still here,' he stated, having previously taken four times the dose in his darkest moments with the intention of not waking up the next day.
He also used hard drugs as a distraction from his grief after his dad's death from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2014.
While once unable to leave his flat for days on end, Lee went travelling three years ago to find himself.
In India, he met a rescue dog, which he claims gave him a new purpose, resulting in him returning to the UK in 2022 with three rescues of his own.
Lee moved to Cornwall, living next door to his mum and sister.
Career-wise, Lee is set to appear on the next series of Celebs Go Dating.
And it's believed Lee found the love he was looking for in the pre-recorded E4 series, as he's now said to be dating Jordan Fairhurst. More Trending
The performer, who came out publicly as gay in 2010, is said to have felt sparks fly 'instantly' upon meeting his new boyfriend under the dating agency.
'There was a real connection there from the get-go, and things developed really quickly,' a source told The Sun. 'They have been on a few dates on the show, but now they are official and in a full-blown relationship.'
'Jon never expected to find something serious on the show, but Jordan really took him by surprise,' added the insider.
'Fans will see how the relationship develops on the show, but it's one of the love stories of the series. It's all very sweet.'

Ozzy Osbourne's abandoned F1 grid walk interview and X-rated answer stunned Martin Brundle

F1 legend Martin Brundle got in trouble with TV bosses for what Ozzy Osbourne said to him during a brief but iconic grid walk interview at the Canadian Grand Prix Ozzy Osbourne provided Martin Brundle with one of his most memorable Formula 1 grid walk encounters. The iconic Black Sabbath frontman, who has died at the age of 76, wasn't particularly known for his passion for F1, but he did make an appearance at least once at a grand prix. ‌ The Birmingham-born rock legend was a VIP guest at the 2003 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. He turned up on the grid before the race began, with reporters eager to speak to him. ‌ Brundle, the voice of ITV's F1 coverage at the time, positioned himself perfectly for an interview, only to find himself battling to extract anything sensible from the star. In a moment that has become legendary, Brundle quipped: "I'll try and think of a question to that answer." ‌ He was then forced to end the chat abruptly after Osbourne let slip a swear word on live television, which got Brundle into trouble with his superiors. Reflecting on the incident, Brundle once said: "He wasn't fully with it, shall we say. I asked him a question and he gave me a very long, incomprehensible answer. "I said to him, 'I'll try and think of a question to that, but in the meantime how are the dogs?' And he said, 'They are at home s****** on the carpets.' It went out live to millions of people and I got in trouble because I was supposed to have known he would swear if I asked that question." Osbourne did at least engage with Brundle, who has branded his grid walks in general as "car crash television". While many stars are happy to converse with the ex-F1 driver on the grid, some have notoriously snubbed him. Over two decades since that encounter, Sky Sports ' Brundle can look back with a sense of humour, though he'd rather be remembered for his racing career. Earlier this year, he told the Daily Mail:"The grid walk actually really annoys me because that's what I'm known for now. ‌ "The whole thing is still a mystery. I won a lot of races as a driver and was on the F1 podium. I was World Sportscar Champion, winner at Le Mans, beat Ayrton Senna a lot of times in F3. "I was a reasonably handy racing driver and I'm a reasonably handy commentator but all I'm going to be remembered for is getting ignored on the grid by the Megan Thee Stallion and other people I'd never heard of until that moment. "It's quite a funny thing but I can't knock it, heading towards 66, I'm lucky to still be in live sport and that's why I was pleased with the OBE because it wasn't an OBE just for grid-walking." Osbourne passed away just weeks after a reunion gig in Birmingham. The Prince of Darkness, who had been battling Parkinson's disease since 2019, died "with his family and surrounded by love". A family statement, issued on Tuesday, said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time."

Critical: Between Life and Death reveals extent of Lambeth fairground crash

Critical: Between Life and Death follows the trauma teams at various London hospitals as they tend to injured patients - including those involved in the Lambeth Country Fair crash Netflix' s latest docuseries Critical: Between Life and Death arrives on the streamer tonight, taking viewers behind the scenes at Royal London Hospital as NHS trauma teams attempt to save patients with life-threatening injuries. ‌ The hard-working unit is thrown into a dire situation from the first few minutes, with several patients fighting for their lives after being injured at a fairground in Brockwell Park. Four people were left with serious injuries in June last year when a fairground ride at the Lambeth Country Show malfunctioned. ‌ "I saw heads and bodies crash into the railings, like crash test dummies," Claire Collins - who witnessed her sister Alison and Alison's boyfriend Nick sustain injuries from the incident - tells the Netflix documentary. ‌ "I immediately jumped up onto the ride, and my sister and Nick were still in their seats. The whole of the side of Nick's face was basically open. Just this big hole. It looked so, so serious. I was really concerned he wasn't going to make it." With Critical: Between Life and Death looking into the aftermath of the horrific incident, here's everything you need to know about what happened at the Lambeth Country Show. What happened at the Lambeth Country Show fairground? ‌ The Lambeth Country Show hit the headlines last year, when a fairground ride failed and people were thrown through the air. Four people were rushed to hospital as a result of the incident, with emergency services being alerted at 6:20pm on Saturday 8 June 2024. One eyewitness told the MailOnline at the time: "People were running towards us and crying and screaming ... Saw a lady with blood streaming down her face. She had paramedics carrying her off the ride." While another said: "I am told a ride collapsed and all hell broke loose. It was horrific. The screams were terrible. Four people flew off and went through the air. It was like a horror movie." A spokesperson for Lambeth Council said at the time that a "thorough" investigation was being carried out into the cause of the malfunction. "The situation is being closely monitored. The area around the ride is secure and the funfair has been closed ... Additional safety inspections are being carried out on all rides and attractions at the show," a spokesperson said. ‌ Those who attended the fair soon took to social media to warn others, with one writing on X: "They need to shut the whole thing down. Do not take your kids, do not go on any of the rides. I am scarred for life. I really hope they are OK. My wife was physically sick. Saw the air ambulance coming over about 15 minutes after it happened." The Metropolitan Police later said in a statement: "Emergency services responded at around 6.20pm on Saturday to a fairground ride having failed at the Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park. Four people have been taken to hospital. We await an assessment of their conditions. Nobody is trapped on the ride. ‌ "Enquiries are under way to establish the circumstances. Cordons are in place at the location. The Health & Safety Executive will be informed." Among those injured was Alison Collins, who was left fighting for her life in the hospital after suffering horrific injuries. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Nick was also admitted to the hospital after suffering injuries to his face and head. Silvana, 11, was also admitted to the hospital with injuries to her legs, pelvis and lower back, while her grandfather, Sebastiano, sustained a broken nose. During the incident, Sebastiano threw himself between Silvana and a flying speaker, which smashed into his face. 'I was given a bag with my dad's things, like his ring,' Sebastiano's daughter Marcia told The Mirror. "It was covered in blood." ‌ Just weeks after the incident, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched an investigation into the ride failure. They said that the ride was being "forensically examined by specialists". HSE inspector Stacey Gamwell said in July last year: "We will continue to thoroughly investigate what happened and determine whether there were any breaches of health and safety law at the time of this incident. "Once we have finished our investigation, a decision will then be made on whether formal enforcement is required in line with our enforcement policy. We remain in contact with those affected by the ride's malfunction and will keep them updated throughout our investigation." What happened to the victims? ‌ While Critical: Between Life and Death viewers will see that Alison's skull fracture and chest injuries were a cause of concern, both she and her boyfriend Nick made a full recovery. Speaking in the documentary, Alison said: "Everybody tells me that when I started to come around, I was sort of talking a load of rubbish and generally, I'm sort of quite good with memory and words. "Initially, I was told that I would probably be in hospital for five or six weeks. I was stuck in a bed, and didn't even know if I could walk. When can I get out of here? In reality, I managed to get better a lot quicker. So I came out of hospital, I think, after two and a half weeks." ‌ Nick's recovery took slightly longer. "It's the last thing you think is going to happen when you go to a country fair, that you'll be in hospital for a few months. It brings it home to you, how lucky we are to have the NHS and critical care when something goes wrong. The skill involved in the surgeon who repaired my face - which to me is absolutely astounding." Alison added: "It's been challenging but we cheated death so we look forward." Sebastiano suffered multiple fractures to his nose but was discharged from hospital, while Silvana's injuries were also not life-threatening. "Well, end of the day, I feel lucky," he told the documentary. "Very lucky." Sebastiano's daughter Marcia said that her family worked with the fun fair and it has now left their business in limbo. 'In a way, we're out of work but we go to different locations.' And her family have made a huge decision: 'My brother said, 'I'm never taking the kids to a fun fair ride again.'
