Anwar: Asean-GCC-China Summit a new era for regional economic ties
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — The inaugural trilateral summit between Asean, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China marks a new chapter of strategic cooperation, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In his welcoming address at a gala dinner hosted in honour of Asean leaders last night, Anwar highlighted the GCC's remarkable transformation, describing it as 'the most peaceful and fastest-growing economy in the world', driven by new technology and artificial intelligence.
He also stressed that Asean regards China as a valued friend, adding that despite complex geopolitical realities, the region remains committed to constructive engagement.
'This is a meeting of minds, people who want to develop their countries, who believe in independence, in rights, in democracy and who want to enhance trade, increase investments,' he said.
Anwar also expressed deep appreciation for the presence of the Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Asean-GCC-China Summit, underscoring the significance of their participation as reflective of enduring friendship and trust among partners.
'This is not just a meeting of countries, but the support, the affection, the trust of Asean leaders are unrivalled and unique.
'To Premier Li Qiang, please be assured (that) Asean is here as a friend of China's, and this partnership must continue to be built on mutual trust,' he said.
The Crown Prince of Kuwait is leading his country's delegation to the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the Asean-GCC-China Summit in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
The Crown Prince is representing the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, at these high-level meetings which coincide with the ongoing 46th Asean Summit hosted by Malaysia.
This year marks Malaysia's fifth term as Asean Chair, having previously held the chairmanship in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. — Bernama

GRS ready for Sabah polls, says Hajiji — but seat talks still pending
TUARAN, June 7 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is fully prepared to face the 17th state election, said its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said GRS has conducted a series of training sessions across constituencies and state assembly areas to strengthen the coalition's election machinery ahead of the polls. 'Clearly, GRS is ready. We have established our election machinery and conducted several rounds of training in preparation. 'However, discussions on seat allocations have yet to take place,' he told reporters after officiating the Aidiladha sacrificial ritual at the Tuaran District Police Headquarters today. Also present were Sabah Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Jahid Jahim; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; and Tuaran Police Chief, Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin. The Sabah Legislative Assembly will automatically dissolve on Nov 11, ending the five-year term that began with its official opening by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on Nov 12, 2020, paving the way for the 17th state election. Commenting on the cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the upcoming election, Hajiji said GRS remains open to discussions with the party's leaders. 'The last time I met the BN chairman (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) was before the fasting month. While political matters were discussed, there have been no further talks on collaboration or related issues since then. 'There is no issue with meeting; I have great respect for all friends, especially the BN chairman, and we are very open on this matter,' he said. However, he said any party-related matters, including the 17th state election and potential cooperation with other parties, must first be discussed with the GRS Supreme Council before any decisions are made. — Bernama

Malaysia supports June 14 Thailand-Cambodia border talks, says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he had spoken with his Thai and Cambodian counterparts and supported the measures they have taken. PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports the measures taken by Thailand and Cambodia in addressing the border dispute involving both countries. Anwar said that Malaysia, as the Asean chair in 2025, is prepared to follow the development of the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia that is slated for June 14, in addition to providing the cooperation required in the talks. 'I spoke with both the prime ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia) and they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. 'I'm ready to participate and provide the cooperation required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably,' he told the media after performing the solat sunat Aidiladha with about 15,000 congregants at Masjid Putra here today. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province which borders Cambodia's Preah Vihear province. A Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed in the incident. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia. Following the tension, the two neighbours have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh on June 14. This is expected to be a crucial step towards a peaceful long-term resolution between the two Asean neighbours.

Part of Jalan Raja to close temporarily for public space revamp

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will temporarily close part of Jalan Raja from June 9 to 15 as part of a pilot initiative to improve public spaces in the city centre. DBKL said the closure is part of its broader effort to create a more liveable, pedestrian-friendly, and well-organised city centre. Officials say the move will create a safer, more accessible space for pedestrians, particularly families, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities (OKU). The trial closure will affect the stretch of road in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, from the Jalan Tun Perak junction to the Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman intersection, DBKL said in a statement. During this period, inbound vehicles on Jalan Raja will still be allowed to turn right into Jalan Tun Perak, but vehicles from Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak will not be allowed to enter Jalan Raja. To assist road users, DBKL will deploy directional signage and enforcement personnel throughout the trial. Public transport routes will also be affected, with temporary changes to GO-KL, RapidKL, and the Hop On-Hop Off bus services. Commuters are advised to check with the respective public transport operators for the latest updates on affected routes and stops. In the statement, DBKL also envisioned the historic Dataran Merdeka area being revitalised as a dynamic hub for arts, culture, and social activities, while providing new opportunities for local traders, creative entrepreneurs, and the tourism sector. 'By reducing traffic congestion and enhancing human interaction in the heart of the city, Kuala Lumpur can move toward becoming a more inclusive and balanced metropolis with a strong identity,' DBKL said. To gather public feedback on the initiative, DBKL has launched an online public survey which is accessible via this link – Responses will be reviewed and considered in shaping the direction of any long-term implementation.
