'I tried ghd's new curling wand - it gave me perfect waves in 15 minutes'

ghd is a well-known name in the beauty industry, renowned for delivering salon-quality results at home for over 20 years and securing a permanent place in the routines of professionals and beauty enthusiasts alike. Their Chronos Curve range is the latest launch from ghd that has got beauty writer Lauren Codling excited.
Following the recent release of the Chronos Straighteners, the four new styling tools - Curve Classic Tong, Curve Grand Tong, Curve Conical Wand and Curve Max Wand - are each designed to achieve different curl objectives.
They're all priced at £189, which aligns with GHD's premium pricing - but if you're familiar with the brand, you know the tools often live up to the hype.
The Max Wand was tempting, especially with its large barrel designed for longer hair and loose curls, while the Classic Tong promised polished, defined waves. Meanwhile, the Grand Tong looked like it could deliver the kind of voluminous ringlets that bounce with every step.
But she opted for the Conical Wand, which she considered "the most versatile of the four" as it is designed to create more relaxed, natural curls, reports the Mirror.
Lauren said: "I'm typically more inclined to use a straightener for curling, so utilising a dedicated wand was a bit of a departure for me. Upon initial inspection, the tool possesses the same sleek, lightweight feel as other ghd devices, with a straightforward on/off switch and a minimalistic design that wouldn't look out of place in a professional salon.
"The lack of adjustable heat settings may be a letdown for those who like to modify it based on the style or section they're working on. However, as any ghd aficionado will tell you, all their tools operate at a steady 185°C, which the brand touts as the 'optimum styling temperature' - and to be fair, it worked a treat for my fine-to-medium hair."
Other who want to adjust the heat setting on the hair styling tool can try Babyliss' Rose Quartz 25mm Curling Tong (£35, Amazon) offers six temperature options, ranging from 160°C to 210°C. Alternatively, the TRESemmé Large Ceramic Curling Tong (£27, Argos) provides three settings, with a top temperature of 200°C.
Returning to the Conical Wand, it took Lauren a few attempts to master the technique - wrapping sections around the barrel rather than clamping, as she is accustomed to.
She continued: "I did manage to scorch my thumb at one point, only to discover that there were heat-resistant gloves included in the box. I divided my hair into sections and wrapped each strand for roughly five seconds. Once brushed out, the result was a soft, natural-looking curl that didn't appear overly 'done'.
"The styling process was surprisingly efficient, taking me just 10 to 15 minutes to style my entire head. The wand was lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, ensuring my arms didn't tire halfway through.
"The swivel cord was a bonus, allowing me to style without feeling like I was wrestling with the wire. A cool tip also proved useful for holding the wand steady without burning my fingers (barring my initial mishap).
"Despite this minor issue, the wand delivered exactly what I had hoped for, without requiring excessive heat or prolonged styling time. The curls held remarkably well with minimal hairspray - slightly softer but still present - and my hair maintained its softness and shine throughout the evening."
The ghd Chronos Curve Conical Wand provided a more uniform and rounded shape with less trial and error when compared to hair straighteners and shoppers looking to achieve volume, definition, and curls, the entire Chronos Curve range is available here.

Apple fans rush for £299 watch cut to £99 in major price drop

The refurbished Apple Watch Series 5 is now £99, but stocks are running low as shoppers are snapping up the smartwatch in the flash sale Apple Watch enthusiasts are buzzing over a new deal on Wowcher, which slashes the price of the previously costly device to £99. The refurbished Apple Watch Series 5, although one of the older models in the company's range, still stands its ground as a fitness smartwatch today, and it's now even more affordable on Wowcher. Launched in 2019, the Series 5 boasts a Retina Display that continuously displays the time, messages and calls. The gadget also comes equipped with SOS, crash detection, and a compass. Included with the watch is a charger, and for those who enjoy a dip, it's swim-proof up to 50 meters — ideal for all your aquatic endeavours. However, bear in mind that as a 2019 model, it may start showing signs of its age. The watch operates on the older S5 chip, and while it holds up well, shoppers might not have access to all the apps and features available on newer Apple Watches, reports the Mirror. Nonetheless, this Apple Watch will serve perfectly well for those looking to monitor their fitness and stay updated with their phone notifications. Meanwhile, those seeking alternatives can find some fantastic deals. Android aficionados can snag the Galaxy Watch Ultra for £399 on Argos thanks to a fresh deal. It's Samsung's top watch on the market, and it's one of the most competitive prices around. For Apple devotees, BackMarket is offering the Apple Watch Ultra for £389, down from its original price of £849 and cheaper than the Galaxy Watch Ultra, despite being refurbished. It also includes a 12-month warranty. Tech editor Dave Snelling commented: "There's no question the Series 5 is the best Apple Watch that's ever been made. The new always-on display makes this feel like the device we've always desired, and the in-built compass is a nice added extra." He continued to praise the device, saying: "Like its predecessors, it packs a swathe of fitness and health tracking features, plus there's an option to have a fully connected cellular model, which means you can leave your phone at home without fear of missing a message or call." However, Snelling did note some drawbacks, particularly with the battery life, adding: "However, for all of its greatness, we do have some niggles with the Series 5. Not least the battery life and the fact that it doesn't look any different from the Series 4." The tech aficionado concluded: "This is the most complete wearable on the market and Apple's rivals have a huge amount of catching up to do."

EV drivers 'more at risk' for breaking little-known rule with £5k fine

Brits overlooking a strict Highway Code rule could find themselves in hot water — especially those driving electric vehicles (EVs). With the UK bracing for a fourth intense heatwave with 32C temperatures, many motorists will be opting for comfortable footwear including Birkenstocks, Crocs, flip-flops and sliders. While these popular warm-weather choices keep our feet cool, they can pose hidden dangers when worn behind the wheel. According to a 2013 study by Sheila's Wheels, up to an estimated 1.4 million accidents and near misses on UK roads could be avoided simply by opting for safer driving shoes. While backless footwear is a key concern, even some seemingly practical options such as wellies — often preferred by campers and festival-goers — can create issues for safe driving due to their bulky fit. Drivers face £100 fine for common move which actually breaks the Highway Code Many drivers may not realise the additional associated risks faced by those driving EVs. Co-founder of Vehicle Mats UK, Chris Astley, underscores these dangers, especially as EVs become more common on Britain's roads. "We see it every summer: drivers in backless shoes, like flipflops, mules, and sliders," he said in a statement sent to the Mirror. "While they might be ideal for hot weather comfort, these kinds of shoes can slip off, get caught under pedals, or simply not give you enough grip to operate your car's pedals safely. And if your feet are wet, whether it's from a dip in the sea or sweating in the heat, you're more at risk." When it comes to driving an EV, the expert warns this advice is even more important - as electric cars tend to have 'significantly more torque' than their traditional petrol or diesel counterparts, meaning they respond more sharply to pedal movement. "This makes precise foot control crucial, and something as innocuous as a wet or unsuitable shoe could make all the difference in an emergency," Chris added. So for EV drivers, the need for pedal control is even greater. Lost grip, a shoe that slips, or a foot clumsily encumbered by inappropriate footwear could mean the difference between a close call and a crash. Legally, there is no explicit ban on driving in flip-flops, sliders, or driving barefoot in the UK. However, Rule 97 of the Highway Code states that drivers must ensure their 'footwear do[es] not prevent you from using the controls in the correct manner'. If an accident occurs and it emerges that inappropriate footwear played a role, drivers can face prosecution for driving without due care and attention under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The penalties can vary dramatically — at the lower end of the scale, a £100 fine and three points on your licence, but this can rise to a £5,000 fine, up to nine points, or even disqualification if the court deems the offence serious — so motorists would be wise to heed the expert's advice and choose their footwear carefully over the coming months. The RAC 's guidance for suitable driving shoes is clear. The best driving shoes have a sole no thicker than 10mm, but not so thin or soft as to compromise safety. They need enough grip to prevent your foot from slipping off the pedals, must not be heavy, should not restrict ankle movement, and be narrow enough to avoid accidentally pressing two pedals at the same time. As temperatures soar and we experience more frequent heatwaves, drivers are urged to keep these simple warnings in mind to stay on the right side of the law — and out of harm's way.

Exact day UK Firesticks will lose access to popular free streaming app

This popular app will be shut down for good in a matter of weeks. Amazon's Fire TV Sticks are one of the most popular streaming devices in the UK as they provide access to all of your favourite streaming and catch-up apps without having to fork out a lot of money on a new smart TV. Simply by sticking this handy gadget into your telly, all of your favourite shows and films can be accessed in one place. However, some unfortunate news is looming on the horizon as one popular streaming app will be removed from the device. ‌ Amazon previously gave the warning late last year, but an exact date has now been confirmed for when the app will be shut down for good. Freevee, which is a free-to-view app, will stop working on all UK Fire TV Sticks at the end of August, reports the Mirror. ‌ This means that those who watch content via the app will no longer be able to do so as of September 1, 2025. For those unfamiliar with Freevee, it is an Amazon ad-supported app that offers users a way to stream movies, TV shows and some live broadcasts for free. Some of the shows currently on the app include Alex Rider, Hell's Kitchen USA, Jury Duty and Bosch: Legacy. However, Amazon's popular streaming device isn't the only service being impacted, Freevee will also be shut down on all Android and iOS devices. For those worried about missing out on their favourite shows, Amazon isn't letting them completely disappear. Instead, Fire TV Stick users will be able to find them on the Amazon Prime Video app. ‌ This has been done in a move to simplify the services available and move them into one app. Therefore, users will soon need to sign into their Prime Video account to gain access. These shows will still be available for free, but they will be mixed in with other Prime content that either requires a one off fee to view or a monthly Amazon Prime subscription. ‌ This may be a bid from retail giant Amazon to get more people to join its Prime subscription service, which is currently £8.99 per month. New members can currently get a 30-day free trial, which will also give them access to Amazon Music and next-day delivery on Amazon shopping. In a pop-up message on the Freevee app, customers were told: "Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, moves and Live TV. The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. ‌ "Continue watching your favourite Freevee Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed. Download Prime Video to get started and sign in with your Amazon account." As of September 1, Amazon Fire TV Stick users will have no choice but to use the Prime Video app to watch their usual free content. For those who are both a Prime Video subscriber and a Freevee viewer, this will be a welcome change as all of their usual content will be easily accessed in one app. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
