AIKKMS stages protest in Ballari demanding immediate release of pending NREGA wages

The Hindu2 days ago

The All-India Kisan Khet Mazdoor Sangathan (AIKKMS) staged a protest on Tuesday in front of the zilla panchayat office in Ballari, demanding the immediate release of pending wages for labourers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The demonstration, led by the district unit of AIKKMS, drew hundreds of wage workers who had not received their dues for over two months, despite having completed work under the government employment scheme. A memorandum was submitted to the chief executive officer (CEO) of the ZP, urging the release of payments and seeking intervention from both State and Central authorities.
Speaking at the protest, AIKKMS district president Govind noted that in the past, wages were usually disbursed within five to 10 days of work. 'However, this time the situation is entirely different. Many labourers are in dire straits. Even chilli and paddy farmers have faced losses owing to poor market prices. They used to migrate to urban areas in search of livelihood options. But they worked in MGNREGA to earn a livelihood. However, they have not been paid their wages. With no savings to fall back on, the people of this region are on the brink of desperation,' he said.
Mr. Govind further highlighted the rising cost of essential commodities which has made survival even more difficult for families awaiting their wages. 'These delays have pushed entire families into financial distress,' he added, urging authorities to act swiftly in releasing the pending payments.
District secretary Guralli Raj raised another concern about the possible denial of the full 100 days of guaranteed work under MGNREGA, along with the legally stipulated daily wage of ₹370. 'Work is progressing at a snail's pace in several panchayats. There is a genuine fear that many workers will be deprived of both their rightful number of workdays and the full wage,' he said.
He called upon the government to guarantee 100 days of employment for every household as per their entitlements, ensure full payment of ₹370 per day to each worker, and make available all associated benefits under the MGNREGA scheme.
The protest saw participation from several union leaders and hundreds of workers from across the district.
Officials who received the memorandum promised the protesters that the issue would be taken up prominently in the upcoming meeting with the Chief Minister on the 30th and 31st of this month. They also promised to raise the matter with the Union government and resolve all local-level issues affecting the timely payment of wages.

Karnataka: Rules to tax unauthorised properties in rural areas soon

BENGALURU : Rural development and panchayat raj minister Priyank Kharge Thursday said guidelines to bring all unauthorised properties in rural areas under the purview of local bodies like gram panchayats for the purpose of collecting property tax will be ready by mid-July. The move is part of measures to implement The Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was passed in March. "We are drawing up guidelines to bring illegal layouts in rural areas into the tax net," said Priyank. "By rolling out the initiative, we can bring around 95 lakh properties under the purview of property tax." While addressing reporters in Bengaluru, Priyank highlighted achievements of the RDPR department over the past two years. He said the department collected over Rs 1,273 crore in revenue this year and it will increase once unauthorised properties start paying tax. He said the department has issued e-khatas to over 50 lakh properties. He said the department has achieved several new initiatives, such as Arivu Kendras (digital libraries), creches, and e-khatas for rural properties, among others. Hitting back at criticism from BJP, which accused him of "doing nothing" for RDPR in the state, he said the central govt had awarded Karnataka RDPR the No. 1 position for decentralisation of power in the state. "This was given by Prime Minister Modi, but BJP still accuses me of not working," Priyank said. He said that while the Centre has ignored the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme, the state provided employment for over 55 lakh people under the scheme in the past two years. Priyank said Karnataka has continued to implement the Jal Jeevan mission to provide safe drinking water in rural areas and that the state and Centre should bear project expenses equally. "The Centre's share is over Rs 3,400 crore but it has released only Rs 515 crore. The Union minister informed us that it would allocate the pending amount in the next budget and requested the state to arrange the funds for the scheme," he said. He said chief minister Siddaramaiah released funds to balance the Union govt's share, and the implementation of the scheme continues without any hindrance. "But BJP is falsely alleging that the state govt is not utilising funds released by the centre for the Jal Jeevan mission," he said.

Sarpanch from Punjab former minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra's village draws CM Bhagwant Mann's attention to govt apathy, lack of development funds

1 2 3 4 Patiala: The sarpanch of Jouramajra, the native village of former cabinet minister and MLA (Samana) Chetan Singh Jouramajra, Wednesday drew CM Bhagwant Mann's attention to the lack of development and the continued neglect of the village by sitting MLA (Shutrana), Kulwant Singh Baazigar of AAP. Speaking during the 'AAP Sarkar Aapke Dwar' programme here, sarpanch Avatar Singh urged the CM to urgently sanction funds for Jouramajra. "Despite being an AAP stronghold, Jouramajra has received no attention in the past three years. Neither has MLA Kulwant Singh Baazigar visited our village, nor have any development grants been sanctioned during his tenure," he alleged. Jouramajra, which falls under the Shutrana assembly segment in Patiala district, has roughly a population of about 1,500. Despite its political significance, having produced a cabinet minister in the past, residents claim the village remains devoid of basic infrastructure improvements. During the recent panchayat elections, Avatar, who is said to be a close confidant of Chetan Singh Jouramajra, defeated Laddi Singh — allegedly backed by MLA Kulwant Singh Baazigar—from a general category seat, despite being a dalit candidate. Outlining the key demands of the village, the sarpanch highlighted the need to upgrade the govt school from Class 8 to Class 10, citing safety concerns for students, particularly girls, who currently travel 5km daily to the nearest school in Dhanetha. Other demands include the setting up of a library or dispensary, a stadium, a marriage hall for the underprivileged, and an embroidery training centre for girls. "Though Rs 3 lakh was approved under Mgnrega for the stadium with the help of former minister Jouramajra, this amount is insufficient," Avatar said. He acknowledged the efforts of the former minister in installing solar lights and rejuvenating a village pond but emphasised that much more needs to be done. "I had put forth these demands before our MLA, but nothing has been done so far. Some are criticising me for raising this issue before the CM, but I ask — what wrong have I done by standing up for my village?" Avatar said. Following the sarpanch's plea, the CM reportedly instructed concerned officials to take swift action, offering a glimmer of hope to the villagers who have long awaited tangible development. The episode reignited discussions over intraparty dynamics within AAP and the alleged sidelining of villages aligned with certain political figures, despite being part of the same political fold. MLA Kulwant Singh Baazigar couldn't respond as he was busy in a meeting. Deputy commissioner (Patiala) Preeti Yadav, too, did not respond to repeated phone calls and messages.
