Sarfaraz Khan immediately shows the benefit of 10 kg weight loss, flies to his left and plucks one-handed stunner: Watch

India A were in search of a moment of magic as England Lions opener Tom Haines piled on the runs against them at the Spitfire Ground in Canterbury, and a moment of magic is what they got, as Sarfaraz Khan took a spectacular diving catch at slip to help dismiss the batter on 171.
With Shardul Thakur bowling and wicketless thus far in the innings, Haines attempted to drive a fuller one through the off-side. His bat caught a thick edge, and with Sarfaraz the only fielder in a one-man slip cordon, the batter sprung with lightning-quick reflexes to his left. Sticking out his left hand, Sarfaraz took the incredibly tough chance, and gave India a window back into the game after England Lions had dominated the proceedings to that point in the innings.
Haines' wicket ended the 93-run partnership he had put on with Dan Mousley for the sixth wicket, which had continued to frustrate India A after a couple of quick wickets in succession earlier in the day.
It must be mentioned that over the course of the last few months, Sarfaraz Khan has been working on his fitness. Before being picked for India, the Mumbai batter shed 10kgs in less than two months.
Sarfaraz continued to make a case for his inclusion in the Test team after missing out on the squad: after pictures had been revealed of the 27-year-old batter looking fitter and trimmer after work put in during the off-season, he showed the fruits of his labour with this catch.
A wicketkeeper by trade but criticised in the past for being slightly lethargic and sloppy in the field, all the technique and confidence of that extra spring in his step was on show in a special catch. It was a moment to celebrate for his India A teammates, as he was thronged by several of them to commend him for his role in the dismissal.
Earlier in the match, Sarfaraz had fallen narrowly short of a century of his own, scoring 92 in the first innings and impressing with the bat, and providing very able support to Karun Nair as he reached his double century.
England Lions ended day three of the warm-up contest only 30 runs behind India's total and with three wickets in the tank, Mousley scoring a century of his own but being dismissed on the last ball of the day by Nair. It was a better day for Mukesh Kumar, who bounced back to take three of India A's five wickets on day three.

Test captain Shubman Gill unlikely to play for India A in second unofficial Test against England Lions

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): India's newly crowned Test captain, Shubman Gill, won't feature in the second unofficial Test between India A and England Lions, which is scheduled to be held at Northampton from June 6, according to ESPNcricinfo. Last month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled a Test squad for the five high-stakes Tests in England, beginning from June 20 at Headingley. The board announced that Gill, who succeeded Rohit Sharma as the Test captain, and Sai Sudharsan would join India A for the second unofficial Test. However, according to ESPNcricinfo, Gill and Sudharsan will travel with the main squad, landing in England on June 6. But seasoned wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul is expected to feature against the England Lions after linking up with the India A squad on Tuesday. Along with Rahul, Akash Deep will be available for selection. Akash sustained a back injury after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. He regained fitness in April and featured for the Lucknow Super Giants, scalping three wickets from six fixtures. According to ESPNcricinfo, Akash was present with the India A squad in the first unofficial Test in Canterbury and bowled in short stints during the breaks across the four days. England Lions, who fielded an inexperienced XI with six Test caps in the first unofficial contest, are expected to receive a massive boost from Chris Woakes's addition for the second clash. The first unofficial Test between India A and England Lions ended in a draw on Monday. Yashasvi Jaiswal (64 off 60 balls), Abhimanyu Easwaran (68 off 87 balls), Dhruv Jurel (53 not out), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (52 not out off 47 balls) impressed in the second innings. Meanwhile, in the first turn, Karun Nair's redemption arc in England began with a rollicking double century. On Day 2, with the sun shining over Canterbury, Karun stepped on the crease with an ambition of continuing to thrive with his formula of success and making England Lions toil hard for wickets. The 32-year-old had to wait till the final over of the 101st over to get his hands on the elusive landmark. Eddie Jack went wayward in line and length, allowing Nair to exploit the gap. He sent the ball racing towards the boundary rope for a four and brought up a sizzling double ton. Nair soaked in the sound of applause in the stadium and kissed his helmet to allow the landmark moment to sink in. Nair holed it to Rew off Zaman Akhter and returned with 204(281). (ANI)

Virat Kohli's No. 18 Jersey Set To Be 'Retired' As No Player Wants 'Burden'

Last Updated: Virat Kohli's number 18 jersey is set to be 'unofficially retired' from Indian cricket because no new player is likely to take the 'burden' of his legacy number. News18 Hours after pacer Mukesh Kumar's wearing of a Number-18 kit for India 'A' against England Lions caused an uproar on social media, a new report has claimed that no player is likely to take up the number — immortalised by the recently retired Virat Kohli — in Tests 'in the near future'. According to news agency PTI, Mukesh has not officially taken up the number and just wore it for the unofficial Test, while if he's called up to the senior squad that'll play five Tests against England, his jersey number will be 49 — the one he has been wearing since his debut. The report added that just like Sachin Tendulkar's jersey No. 10 and MS Dhoni's No. 7, 'it was unlikely' that any player would be open to taking the 'burden' of the legacy number. 'Mukesh wore No. 18 during the opening 'Test' match versus Lions. But when it comes to India A squad, there are no fixed numbers as jerseys don't have names. Anyone can pick any random number. The jersey numbers are only sacrosanct for international games," the news agency quoted a senior BCCI official as saying. The report claimed that the two new members of the squad, B Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, will also not wear the number 18 jersey. In Indian cricket, there is no official tradition for retiring specific jersey numbers, nor is there any such rule mentioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC). But both Tendulkar and Dhoni's numbers haven't been worn since their retirements, except for one instance when Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur wore the 10 and was abused, forced to change it again. Kohli announced his Test retirement on May 12 via an Instagram post, saying that although the decision was difficult, he felt the time was right to call of the 14-year-long journey. India's five-Test series against England will be the first since then and several options — new captain Shubman Gill, debutant-call-up Sai Sudharsan and returnee Karun Nair have been touted as options to take his number four position. In the India 'A' game, where Gill and Sudharsan didn't play, Nair scored a double ton to strengthen his chances while Mukesh picked up three wickets. First Published: June 02, 2025, 21:23 IST

RCB vs PBKS Live Score, IPL 2025 Final, Ahmedabad Weather Updates: Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings aim to end title drought

RCB vs PBKS Live Score, IPL 2025 Final, Ahmedabad Weather Updates: Virat Kohli's near two-decade-long pursuit of an IPL trophy with Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face a stern challenge from Shreyas Iyer's determined Punjab Kings when the 18th season of the world's biggest T20 league culminates at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday. With RCB fans expected to flood the stands in No. 18 jerseys, the summit clash promises to be an emotional spectacle — particularly with Kohli stepping away from cricket temporarily following his Test retirement and with India's next ODI series still months away. RCB have finally shaken off the inconsistency that haunted their past campaigns, arriving in the final on the back of a dominant eight-wicket win over Punjab in Qualifier 1. Kohli has once again led from the front with 614 runs, anchoring the innings and laying solid foundations at the top. But the real transformation lies in the depth around him — a more balanced batting unit that no longer relies solely on its talisman. Phil Salt's explosive approach complements Kohli's poise, while Mayank Agarwal, captain Rajat Patidar, and Jitesh Sharma have delivered crucial contributions throughout the season. The team is also hoping for the return of Tim David, who has missed the last two games. If fit, he'll reunite with Romario Shepherd as a powerful pair in the death overs. On the bowling front, Josh Hazlewood has been instrumental with 21 wickets, bringing calm control and penetration. The Australian will aim to climb higher on the wicket charts in what could be his last outing of the season. Punjab Kings, meanwhile, responded to their crushing defeat in Qualifier 1 with a remarkable rebound, eliminating five-time champions Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 to secure their first final appearance in 11 years. That both RCB and PBKS — the top two teams in the league stage — have made it to the final adds a poetic layer to a contest between two franchises chasing their maiden title. For Punjab, the turnaround has been nothing short of spectacular. Long viewed as underachievers, they've flourished under the strong leadership of captain Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. Iyer, who amassed 603 runs this season, is leading an IPL final for the second straight year after his 2024 triumph with Kolkata Knight Riders. Remarkably, he becomes the first player to captain three different franchises in IPL finals — Delhi Capitals, KKR, and now PBKS — highlighting his pedigree as a leader. His hunger remains undiminished, and with a solid supporting cast including Prabhsimran Singh, Josh Inglis, Priyansh Arya, and Shashank Singh, Punjab boast a line-up that can counterpunch with force. Though the absence of Marcus Jansen has left their bowling attack thinner on paper, Punjab showed grit by keeping MI quiet on a batting-friendly track. Yuzvendra Chahal, still nursing a hand injury, wasn't at his best in Qualifier 2, but PBKS will be counting on him to deliver against his former team. With no rain predicted, the match is expected to proceed without weather interruptions. A 120-minute extension window and a designated reserve day are in place to ensure the final reaches its conclusion. Squads: Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Rajat Patidar (c), Virat Kohli, Phil Salt (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Devdutt Padikkal, Swastik Chhikara, Liam Livingstone, Krunal Pandya, Swapnil Singh, Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Manoj Bhandage, Jacob Bethell, Josh Hazlewood, Rasikh Salam Dar, Suyash Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Nuwan Thushara, Lungi Ngidi, Abhinandan Singh, Mohit Rathee, Yash Dayal.
