Charities share staggering £450,000 donation following Royal Ascot BGC pledge
For the sixth year on the spin, the BGC announced that its members will give away every penny of profit from win and each-way bets on the Britannia Stakes at last week's Royal Ascot meeting.

Champion jockey teamed up with Saeed bin Suroor to ride Arabian Story to victory in Thursday's race, staving off the threat of La Botte to win by a neck.
In a race with 30 runners - coming on a day where FIVE favourites landed - the winner coming in at 15/2 wasn't necessarily a win for the bookmakers, given only three runners - including La Botte - went off shorter odds.
But it's that competitiveness in the packed race that ensured the bookmakers remained in profit across the race and that is terrific news for the charities.
Prostate Cancer UK, Missing People, the SAS Regimental Association, Ascot Racecourse Supports, Racing to School, Greenhouse Sports and Tempus Novo will all now benefit from the stunning £450,000 donation.
That donation coming from BCG members, including Flutter (Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Bet), Entain (Ladbrokes, Coral), Evoke (888 William Hill), Kindred (Unibet), Betway, Rank Group (Grosvenor Sport), Virgin Bet, LivescoreBet, Star Sports and QuinnBet - as well as with the support of Tote and Bet with Ascot.
The final figure now takes the total amount raised through this very initiative to an astonishing £3.6million for charitable causes.
Including other campaigns, the BGC has now raised a whopping £6.5 million for good causes since its formation back in 2019.
While BGC members also help fund horseracing, with a remarkable £350m a year through sponsorship, media rights and the betting levy.

"A huge thank you goes to all our members who took part, their customers who placed a bet on the Britannia Stakes, and of course to Ascot for their continued partnership in this important initiative.
"Together, we've now raised over £3.6 million through the Britannia Stakes alone, and more than £6.5 million overall. These substantial donations highlight the real commitment of the BGC and its members to supporting charities across sport, racing, health, and the veteran community.
"We know how much this funding means to the organisations involved, and we're incredibly proud to play our part in supporting the incredible work they do."

Richardson takes flying start world record a year on from nation switch
Aug 15 (Reuters) - British track cyclist Matt Richardson set the world record in the 200-metre flying start, becoming the first person to break the nine-second barrier a year on from his defection from Australia. Richardson, who won three medals for Australia at the Paris Olympics, recorded a time of 8.941 seconds at the Konya Velodrome in Turkey on Thursday. The time shaved more than a tenth of a second off the previous mark of 9.088 set by Dutch Olympic champion Harrie Lavreysen at the Paris Games last year. "It's cool to be able to call myself the fastest cyclist of all-time," Richardson said in a British Cycling statement. "It was a lot faster than I've previously ridden. I was basically just a passenger. I gave the bike a bit of direction and it was just steering itself almost." Richardson's change of allegiance straight after the Olympics took Australia by surprise and generated some criticism from elite former cyclists. Richardson brushed off the criticism, saying he made a "good return" on the investment Australia's elite cycling programme had put into him.

We want to sell our listed house — do we need an EPC?
Q. We want to sell our listed house. The estate agents say we may not need an energy performance certificate (EPC) but should get one anyway. Do we need an EPC for a listed house? A. EPCs record the energy efficiency of buildings, rated from A to G. It is a common misconception that they are not needed for listed properties. It is far more complicated than that. The basic requirements are set out in part 2 of the Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) (England and Wales) Regulations 2007. Regulation 6 requires a valid EPC to be available whenever a building is to be sold. The maximum penalty for marketing or selling a property without a valid EPC is £5,000, although prosecutions are rare. • Read more expert advice on property, interiors and home improvement Under regulation 5, certain properties are exempt from these requirements, including 'buildings officially protected as part of a designated environment or because of their special architectural or historical merit'. Although this potentially exempts listed buildings and houses in conservation areas, they are only excluded if 'compliance with certain minimum energy performance requirements would unacceptably alter their character or appearance'. For example, government guidance notes that many typical EPC recommendations — such as double glazing, new doors and windows, external wall insulation and external boiler flues — would probably cause unacceptable changes in most historic buildings. This presents a problem in that listed building owners are unlikely to know whether they will need an EPC without first asking an EPC assessor to advise on what energy efficiency measures are needed. Owners may also need to consult with their listed buildings officer to anticipate queries from potential buyers about any advice set out in the EPC. In addition, in December 2024, the government launched a consultation about reforms to the regime, which include proposals to bring all listed buildings within the EPC net. It is probably best to commission an EPC before marketing a listed house, even if it turns out that a valid certificate is not required by legislation. King Charles to mark 80th anniversary of VJ Day with address
King Charles will mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on Friday with a message paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of military personnel in the second world war who fought and died in the Pacific and far east, saying they will never be forgotten. In an address, Charles will reflect on the horrors experienced by prisoners of war and civilians of occupied lands in the region 'whose suffering reminds us that war's true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life'. VJ Day on 15 August marks the anniversary of Japan's surrender to the allies after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, which in effect ended the second world war. The message will be released at 7.30am BST on Friday, before the king and queen attend a service of remembrance with veterans and the prime minister, Keir Starmer, at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. On Friday evening, hundreds of buildings across the country will be lit up to mark VJ 80 as part of commemoration events planned throughout the UK. In his six-minute speech, echoing the historic broadcast by his grandfather, George VI, Charles will describe how the heroes of VJ Day 'gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected', with victory made possible by close collaboration between nations 'across vast distances, faiths and cultural divides'. He will say this demonstrated how 'in times of war and in times of peace, the greatest weapons of all are not the arms you bear but the arms you link', and will add the service and sacrifice of veterans and those who lost their lives fighting in the conflict 'shall never be forgotten'. Friday's televised service, broadcast live by the BBC, will pay tribute to all those who served in the Asia-Pacific theatre, including Burma Star recipients, British Indian army veterans, former prisoners of war, and those who fought in pivotal battles including Kohima and Imphal in India. Charles, Queen Camilla and other senior figures will leave floral tributes during the service, which will be hosted by the Royal British Legion in partnership with the government. A national two-minute silence will conclude with an aerial display by the Red Arrows and the service will draw to a close with a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, before the king and queen attend a reception with second world war veterans.
