Jazz legend sets the tone to mark launch of Stirling's newest live music venue
Stirling's flourishing cultural and musical landscape continues to expand with the unveiling of a new piano lounge within the historic Golden Lion Hotel.
Patrons and special invitees were treated to a performance by one of the world's most celebrated jazz and blues artists, Dom Pipkin, on Wednesday evening (July 9) at the hotel's Cronies bar.
The renowned pianist and composer drew a diverse crowd, including local musicians and creative talents from the area.
Pipkin, hailed by Blues in Britain as "one of the world's greatest exponents of New Orleans piano", has established himself as a fixture in the US city's music scene, gracing stages at events including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival and the prestigious 'Piano Night'.
Stirling Council Leader, Cllr Gerry McGarvey, said: "I lived in New Orleans for a time and I'm a huge fan of Dom and his music. It was incredible to see him play in Stirling and it's yet another milestone in the city's growing reputation for arts, music and culture.
"The evening at the Golden Lion set the bar for our fantastic hospitality industry and will hopefully spark more innovation and attractions across the sector to boost our appeal to both residents and visitors.
"We've got so much going on in Stirling and we're committed to working with our communities, local organisations and businesses to unleash the area's full cultural potential and maximise the benefits of a vibrant night-time economy."
Hotel owners, Gary and Ros Atkinson, first encountered Dom's musical talent years ago at Ronnie Scott's in London. Ros recalled: "The moment he started to play it took our breath away and we immediately booked him for our Scottish hotel.
"Since then, we have been lucky to become good friends and watch him perform may times, including in Europe with his band Morcheeba.
"We have created our Cronies Piano Lounge as a stylish and relaxed venue for cool music and classic cocktails and were thrilled when he immediately agreed to play and launch our series of lounge music piano nights. It was great to see the audience appreciate the art of a true British jazz legend."
The hotel is recruiting a line-up of top pianists to perform Friday nights, Saturday afternoons and evenings, and Sunday Jazz Lunch. A full schedule will be released shortly.
The Golden Lion, a 66-bedroom establishment and the oldest building on King Street, boasts notable ties to Rabbie Burns. As part of the Bloody Scotland crime-writing festival in September, it will host The Whisky Night – an evening of spirited conversation and music.
The event will feature appearances from Rebus creator Sir Ian Rankin, singer-songwriter James Yorkston, Colin MacIntyre of Mull Historical Society, and author Natalie Jayne Clark.
Mr Atkinson, a business ambassador for the Scottish Chambers of Commerce and a member of their Scottish Business Advisory Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the city's potential. He said: "This is a great city with a great hospitality offering and we are working closely with local tourism, businesses and the council to promote Stirling. There are exciting times ahead and it's great to have so much local support."
Councillor McGarvey further emphasised the importance of collaboration, saying: "Having dynamic partnerships with creative entrepreneurs like Gary and the local hospitality and tourism trade is at the heart of our strategy to build our offering to local residents and UK and international visitors."
Ewan Duncan, the owner of Europa Music in Stirling's Friars Street, Scotland's largest vinyl record shop, shared his delight at the return of live music events. He said: "It was great to see live music with a world-class jazz pianist in a hotel back on the up and up and to have such an appreciative audience there to enjoy it."
Dom said: "I'm just lucky they want to listen to me as an artist doing what I do. I was delighted to support the new venture by Gary and Ros and spread my alternative blues gospel. I will be back later in the year and wish them and every artist performing here every success."

Now in its 11th year, Tea Green Events has become a major platform for independent Scottish designers, drawing thousands of visitors to its markets across the country. Following the success of Tea Green Events' markets at National Galleries Scotland: National last year, this is the market's debut event at the Queen Street venue, taking place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August from 10am-5pm. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad This year's markets will also come to V&A Dundee, Bowhouse in the East Neuk of Fife, Aberdeen Art Gallery and both Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and The Burrell Collection in Glasgow. Laura Sayers Specialising in carefully curated markets within some of Scotland's most stunning creative spaces, Tea Green Events was launched by Dundee jeweller Joanne MacFadyen in 2014. Joanne said: 'The Portrait is a truly spectacular space and the perfect backdrop to show off the cream of Scotland's creative talent, including many designers and makers who live and work in and around the capital. Due to the large number of tourists visiting Edinburgh at this time, the market will also put Scotland's design talent on a global stage, where we can showcase the very best of Scottish craftsmanship. "With everything from jewellery and prints to knitwear and ceramics, these beautiful hand-crafted pieces of work are made by some truly talented individuals who I know are looking forward to this amazing opportunity'. Laura Sayers Laura commented: 'Turning up at a market can sometimes be quite alienating for folk like me who spend a lot of their work life alone, but the community of makers and the customers that come along are always so warm and welcoming. It's been encouraging for me to see my own work looking and feeling at home alongside some of my favourite small businesses who are all making such high-quality, handmade products. "As a result, I feel spurred on to make more wholehearted work to mirror the high standards of the other artisans, and the markets give me direction and something to aim for, particularly in the slow summer months. There's also something special about that human interaction and living online means that you're often craving a space for these conversations. I always come away feeling refreshed and excited for what's next. 'Edinburgh was a beautiful city to study in, and my time at the College of Art really shaped and laid foundations for the work I make today. I'm always more than happy to return to soak up some more inspiration, and the Portrait Gallery has been one of my personal favourite spots for a long time. Making it a base for my artwork for a couple of days is a real pleasure.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad National Galleries of Scotland's Director of Audience, Isabella Miller, said: 'We can't wait to welcome the makers back to the National Galleries of Scotland following the amazing success of the Tea Green market at the National gallery last summer and winter. This time around we're hosting the market in the stunning surroundings of the Portrait gallery in the centre of Edinburgh. "Visitors can explore the market under the bedazzling stars in the world-famous Great Hall. The decadent and ornate backdrop of the Portrait is the perfect setting for visitors to feel fully enveloped in the spirit of the market. Beautiful hand-crafted designs, in a beautiful hand-crafted building, what's not to love! The Portrait is dedicated to exploring various aspects of the Scottish story, so where better to also showcase the talents of the incredible market creatives and support Scottish businesses. "We hope this will offer something a little different for our visitors to enjoy and that people can browse the stalls then explore the art, or pop into the café to relax and enjoy some delicious food. There will be something for everyone to discover during a day out at the Portrait.' Dr Maria Maclennan, Senior Lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art, added: 'It's always wonderful to follow our graduates' creative journeys as they grow and flourish into confident and established designer-makers. Communities and markets like Tea Green are ever-important platforms for our alumni in realising their ambitions, connecting with fellow creatives, and showcasing the breadth, diversity, and quality of work emerging from Scottish art colleges. Dunelm shoppers 'love' £30 item that's 'named after' BBC legend
The new lamp certainly makes a statement - and shoppers love the not-so-subtle reference to a TV icon Dunelm shoppers have been quick to comment on the latest piece of homeware that seems to have connections to a British soap star. The £30 lamp would likely be on their shopping list - and fans of the soap and style were just as interested in the new piece that claims to "make a stylish statement for any space." One of the new quirky lighting options to be added to the homeware store's catalogue, the £30 Kat Leopard Print Table Lamp certainly stands out from the ordinary. Standing at 41cm tall, this table lamp claims to "bring a touch of the wild indoors" with its "bold" design of complete leopard print. On Facebook, members of the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group pointed out the name could be paying tribute to EastEnders icon Kat Slater (played by Jessie Wallace). The person who wrote the post put: "Dunelm calling their new leopard print light Kat!" One said: "Omg that's amazing!" Another person added: "I bloody need this!" And, a third put: "I love it. Bring out my inner Kat Slater!" Someone else commented: "Well, what else would you call your leopard print range!" And, one more tagged a friend and wrote: "This has you written all over it!" Jessie Wallace has played Kat Slater, known for her love of all things leopard print, on the BBC soap on and off since 2000. Her character has been known for some high-profile storylines such as revealing she was the mother (not sister) of Zoe Slater, having her baby son swapped at birth, running the local pub, family feuds, and various romantic relationships - including Alfie Moon, Phil Mitchell and Kush Kazemi. Kat remains a major character in the soap, having been on screen for a third stint since 2018. Fans of the soap are eagerly awaiting the shake-up that will see the mum-of-three back behind the bar at the Queen Victoria pub as landlady. At the time of writing, the £30 lamp has no reviews online. It's available for free click and collect at a Dunelm store or can be delivered to your door for an added £3.95. The homeware store has recently put lots of new and unique-looking lights for sale on the website, sure to add some personality and character to a space. Shoppers could opt for this £28 Flower-Shaped Table Light, a colourful £35 Disco Ball Easy Fit Pendant Shade or an interesting-looking £45 Triceratops Skull Table Lamp. People who are in need of a home refresh, Dunelm has lots of new items available for almost every room in the house. The full range of items added to the ever-growing catalogue can be found here.
