Biden's longtime aide Mike Donilon says Dems overreacted to disastrous debate
Donilon, 66, who served as a senior adviser to the president and has been in Joe Biden's orbit since the early 1980s, insisted that his old boss's communications skills grew stronger throughout his presidency, a source familiar with his transcribed interview told The Post.
'What I saw, day in and day out, was a leader who was deeply engaged and in command on critical issues, both at home and abroad,' Donilon told the Oversight panel's lawyers during his opening statement, according to the Associated Press.

'Every president ages over the four years of a presidency and President Biden did as well, but he also continued to grow stronger and wiser as a leader as a result of being tested by some of the most difficult challenges any president has ever faced.'

Many Democrats have described Donilon as a true believer in Biden, 82. Famed Obama strategist David Axelrod argued that Donilon was so 'tied to Biden emotionally that he could not accept the truth.'

That conviction was on full display at his interview on Thursday, during which he vehemently defended Biden's fitness for office.
'To display his delusion, Mr. Donilon stated during his transcribed interview that he believes the punditry and Democrats in Congress overreacted after Joe Biden's disastrous debate,' the source told The Post.
'Donilon stated that Joe Biden's communications skills got stronger throughout his time as President.'

Last month, the GOP-led House Oversight Committee summoned Donilon to appear before the panel, and he is now the eighth ex-Biden aide to appear before the panel.
Questioning was done by the Oversight Committee's attorneys rather than lawmakers on the panel, who were mostly far away from Washington, DC, and enjoying recess in their home districts.
Back in May, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) revived his probe into whether there was a 'cover-up' of Biden's mental acuity that he had initiated last Congress — an inquiry he has since broadened to encompass the 46th president's use of autopen to sign official documents.
Strikingly, Donilon 'did not recall having any knowledge of the autopen,' and didn't 'know what the autopen was used for,' according to the source.

The 66-year-old was described in the bombshell book 'Original Sin' as a member of the 'Politburo,' the group of aides closest to Biden who were characterized as the 'ultimate decision-makers' on his team.

During the private questioning, Donilon was adamant that Biden was the best man to lead the country throughout his term in office.
Still, he wasn't oblivious to the public skepticism of the 46th president, acknowledging the angst over his string of verbal flubs and flagrant mishaps.
'Donilon admitted that Joe Biden's presence wasn't as commanding and he could stumble over more words,' the source said, noting that Donilon admitted he was 'frustrated and knew it was difficult to get past the visuals of President Biden that people were seeing.'
Having worked in various capacities for Biden since 1981, Donilon raked in a fat paycheck. While working for Biden's 2024 campaign, he reaped an eye-watering $4 million and would have gotten another $4 million if the 46th president won reelection, according to his interview.

Peering away from reporters with his bushy white eyebrows, Donilon ignored questions from the press both before and after his roughly six-hour interview.

Other aides to appear before the powerful investigative panel, including former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain; former counselor to the president Steve Ricchetti; Jill Biden's powerful former chief of staff Anthony Bernal; former presidential physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor; Ashley Williams, former special assistant to the president and deputy director of Oval Office Operations; and Neera Tanden, the former White House director of the Domestic Policy Council.
Next week, Bruce Reed, former deputy chief of staff for policy, and Anita Dunn, former senior advisor to the president for communications, will appear before the panel.

US tariffs put 30,000 South African jobs at risk, officials say
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — U.S. reciprocal tariffs have put an estimated 30,000 jobs at risk, South African authorities said Monday, four days before a 30% U.S. tariff on most imports from South Africa kicks in. South Africa was slapped with one of the highest tariff rates by its third-largest trading partner — after China and the EU — creating uncertainty for the future of some export industries and catapulting a scramble for new markets outside the U.S. Tariffs come into effect on Aug. 8. In an update on mitigation measures, a senior government official warned that an estimated 30,000 jobs were in jeopardy if the response to the higher tariffs was 'mismanaged'. 'We base this on the ongoing consultations that we have with all the sectors of the economy from automotive, agriculture and all the other sectors that are going to be impacted,' said Simphiwe Hamilton, director-general of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition. South Africa is already grappling with stubbornly high unemployment rates. The official rate was 32,9% in the first quarter of 2025 according to StatsSA, the national statistical agency, while the youth unemployment rate increased from 44,6% in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 46,1% in the first quarter of 2025. In his weekly public letter on Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that South Africa must adapt swiftly to the tariffs since they could have a big impact on the economy, the industries that rely heavily on exports to the U.S. and the workers they employ. 'As government, we have been engaging the United States to enhance mutually beneficial trade and investment relations. All channels of communication remain open to engage with the US,' he said. 'Our foremost priority is protecting our export industries. We will continue to engage the US in an attempt to preserve market access for our products.' President Donald Trump has been highly critical of the country's Black-led government over a new land law he claims discriminates against white people. Negotiations with the U.S. have been complicated and unprecedented, according to South Africa's ministers, who denied rumors that the lack of an ambassador in the U.S affected the result of the talks. The Trump administration expelled Ebrahim Rasool, South Africa's ambassador to Washington, in mid-March, accusing him of being a 'race-baiting politician' who hates Trump. International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola highlighted that even countries with ambassadors in the U.S. and allies of Washington had been hard hit with tariffs. However, Lamola confirmed that the process of appointing a replacement for Rasool was 'at an advanced stage'. The U.S. accounts for 7.5% of South Africa's global exports. However, several sectors, accounting for 35% of exports to the U.S., remain exempt from the tariffs. These include copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber products, certain critical minerals, stainless steel scrap and energy products remain exempted from the tariffs. The government has been scrambling to diversify South Africa's export markets, particularly by deepening intra-African trade. Countries across Asia and the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have been touted as opportunities for high-growth markets. The government said it had made significant progress in opening vast new markets like China and Thailand, securing vital protocols for products like citrus. The government has set up an Export Support Desk to aid manufacturers and exporters in South Africa search for alternate markets. While welcoming the establishment of the Export Support Desk, an independent association representing some of South Africa's biggest and most well-known businesses called for a trade crisis committee to be established that brings together business leaders and government officials, including from the finance ministry. Business Leadership South Africa said such a committee would ensure fast, coordinated action to open new markets, provide financial support, and maintain employment. 'U.S. tariffs pose a severe threat to South Africa's manufacturing and farming sectors, particularly in the Eastern Cape. While businesses can eventually adapt, urgent temporary support is essential,' said BLSA in a statement.

The cookies that unite California's politicians, no matter their party
Fox 11 anchor Elex Michaelson is one of the nice guys in L.A. media. His tough-but-fair-and-especially-polite lines of questioning made him a natural to help moderate debates for the L.A. mayoral and sheriff's races three years ago. The 38-year-old Agoura Hills native is so nice that he's known not just for his work but also … his mom's cookies and brownies. Michaelson gifts every guest who treks up to Fox 11's West L.A. studios for his weekly public affairs show 'The Issue Is' a box of the desserts. We're talking former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, billionaire Rick Caruso, L.A. County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman, Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi and dozens of other political heavyweights on both sides of the proverbial aisle. U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) once brought a bag of Porto's to Michaelson's team in gratitude for all the cookies and brownies he had received over the years. Former Congress member and current California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter sent Elex's mom, Crystal, a handwritten thank-you note. 'Every single time I see [L.A. County Sheriff] Robert Luna, he brings them up without fail,' Michaelson said with pride in a phone interview. One not-so-famous person who has been lucky enough to enjoy them? Me. Elex recently gave me a box when I appeared on 'The Issue Is' just after U.S. Border Patrol sector chief Gregory Bovino, who took time off from bloviating about the border to accept the goodies because even la migra gets sweets, I guess. Crystal Michaelson's cookies and brownies are worthy of a stall at the Hollywood farmers market, and I'm not saying that just so I can appear on 'The Issue Is' again soon. The cookies last time around were blondies studded with chocolate chips and M&Ms. Slightly toasted on the outside, chewy on the inside, thick yet airy and spiked with an extra dash of vanilla, the blondies were beautiful. Just as delicious were the brownies, all about the firm, dark-chocolate-derived fudge that crackled with each bite. Both featured a generous sprinkling of sea salt, the crystals perfectly cutting through all the sugar and butter. They didn't last the drive back to Orange County. When Elex took his mom to a holiday party hosted by then-Vice President Kamala Harris some years back, most of the movers and shakers greeted her with the same enthusiasm they showed her son because of what she bakes. 'I'm not really a baker!' insisted Crystal, an artist by trade. She makes the goodies every Thursday afternoon, the day before 'The Issue Is' tapes, with an occasional assist by Elex. 'But it's turned into a whole thing!' The tradition dates back to elementary school, when Crystal treated Elex's teachers and classmates to them as 'a thank you.' Elex took some to the first and last day of his college internship for Fox 11 to hand out to the newsroom, then repeated the gesture when he worked at XETV in San Diego and ABC 7 in Los Angeles before returning to Fox 11. 'Their first and last impression of me,' he said, 'were these cookies.' Michaelson repeated the move every day for the first week of 'The Issue Is.' The inaugural guests were Newsom, then-Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff (now California's junior U.S. senator), and commentator Areva Martin. 'Everyone loved the cookies so much that they joked, 'We won't return unless we get more cookies,'' Michaelson said. The crew insisted they get treated to them one more week, 'and my mom just never really stopped since then,' even baking and shipping them to regular guests during the COVID era as a Christmas gift. 'One of the only things that seems to unite Republicans and Democrats [in California] is these cookies and brownies,' Elex said. 'There's nothing like the unifying power of food to bring people together to not just talk, but listen to each other.' Crystal gets a shout-out in the show's closing credits for 'cookies, brownies and moral support.' She learned the recipes as a teen, from a family friend. They're baked in a Pyrex baking dish, sliced into squares, then put in cardboard boxes that she decorates by writing, 'The Issue Is ... ' People have suggested Crystal sell them, but she declines: 'I'm not a baker.' For now, she's flattered by all the attention — Newsom once wrote a letter on his official letterhead raving about them. The only issue she sees with them …is Elex. 'He eats them too much,' Crystal said. 'I've said before that maybe I should make them a little bit healthier. And everyone said, 'No, don't do that!'' Gov. Greg Abbott has threatened to remove from office the Texas House Democrats who fled the state if they don't show up for work. Many Texas Democrats left on Sunday to keep the state House from recording a quorum in its Monday legislative session, preventing the chamber from doing business.
