A man has been arrested after a car crash in Conroe that killed a 3-year-old on Sunday.
Two surviving victims are in the ICU for their injuries.
The suspect is accused of causing the crash while driving under the influence.
CONROE, Texas - A man has been arrested after a fiery car crash in Conroe that killed a 3-year-old girl on Sunday, police say.
According to the Monday release from the Conroe Police Department, the suspect, 55-year-old Donald Carson, caused the crash while driving under the influence. The crash also injured a 26-year-old mother and her 5-year-old daughter.
The backstory
Around 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, Conroe Fire responded to the crash on I-45 North near the San Jacinto River and north of FM 1488.
A blue Honda Civic had broken down on the shoulder, reports said, and was struck by a white Toyota Camry, which Monday's release says was driven by Carson.
Monday's release clarified that Carson had been traveling in the HOV lane when he veered into the inside shoulder and hit the Camry from behind.
Crews arrived to find both cars engulfed in flames, reports said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, and worked to save the four occupants of the two vehicles. Monday's release says bystanders also assisted in the rescue.
The mother and child who survived the crash suffered third-degree burns and other injuries, police say, and were taken to a nearby hospital. The 3-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
What we know
Carson was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries following the crash, police said.
During an investigation by the vehicular crimes unit from the Mongomery County District Attorney's Office, who responded to the scene, Carson reportedly showed signs of impairment after the crash.
Monday's release says Carson has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault. All three charges are classified as felonies.
Carson will be booked into the Montgomery County Jail once he is released from the hospital, the police say.

Family members identified the 3-year-old girl who was killed in the crash as Camiria. Her mother, Shavhon White, and her sister, Chloe, are still in the hospital.

Motorcyclist, teen girl killed in 2 separate traffic collisions in Huntington Beach
Huntington Beach police are investigating whether impairment may have played a role in two separate traffic collisions Friday and Sunday that claimed the lives of a 37-year-old Huntington Beach man and an unidentified 15-year-old girl. The first crash, described by police as a motorcycle versus tow truck, took place Friday shortly before 3 p.m. near the intersection of McFadden Avenue and Springdale Street, where a blue Yamaha R1 motorcycle reportedly crashed into the back of a yellow Ford tow truck carrying a vehicle. Huntington Beach police spokesman Corbin Carson said the tow truck was stopped on McFadden, just west of Springdale, but could not say whether the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light or may have been on the side of the road when it was struck, as the incident is still under investigation. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered the motorcyclist — described as a 37-year-old man from Huntington Beach — had sustained life-threatening injuries. Paramedics attempted to provide medical treatment, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an HBPD release. The unidentified driver of the truck cooperated with police, who determined that he was not impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. However, it was still unknown Wednesday whether impairment may have been a factor for the man on the motorcycle. Huntington Beach police on Sunday, at around 8:11 p.m., were dispatched to a collision near the intersection of Edinger Avenue and Beach Boulevard involving three vehicles, according to a release issued Monday. According to a preliminary investigation, a silver 2014 Honda Accord was traveling westbound on Edinger, just east of Beach, when it reportedly struck a white Lexus RX head-on in the eastbound lanes. Fort Pierce man gets 2 years' prison after plea in deadly 2022 crash in Port St. Lucie
FORT PIERCE – A 24-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison in connection with a 2022 crash that ultimately left a 71-year-old driver dead, according to documents and attorneys. Mccenroe Davansky Duroseau, of Fort Pierce, pleaded no contest in July to a vehicular homicide charge involving the August 2022, crash on Northwest Selvitz Road in Port St. Lucie. Sentencing was Aug. 18 before Circuit Judge Michael Heisey. A 71-year-old man, identified in court records as Thomas David Coxey, succumbed to his injuries three days after the collision at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, a police spokesperson has said. Investigators determined Duroseau drove south on Northwest Selvitz Road at more than double the 35 mph speed limit when his Toyota Camry entered the northbound lanes, striking a Honda Civic before crashing head on with a Buick Encore driven by Coxey. The crash happened about 500 feet north of Northwest Archer Avenue, according to Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, Port St. Lucie Police spokesperson. Police calculated Duroseau was traveling at least 80 mph in the incident, using data collected from the vehicle. Duroseau and a passenger were taken to Lawnwood with non life-threatening injuries, records show. Assistant State Attorney Robert Stone said he asked for 10 years in prison. He said the lowest permissible sentence was 111 months. 'They (the defense) argued for a departure … from the lowest permissible sentence of 111 months,' Stone said. 'And Judge Heisey agreed and departed and gave him two years in prison and five years' probation.' Assistant Public Defender Rebecca Kelly, who heads the Fort Pierce office, said the defense argued that because it was an isolated incident and because of Duroseau's "extreme remorse" the judge should give him a lesser sentence. 'He listened to all the evidence and came to a decision," she said. Stone said there was testimony that Duroseau was remorseful and sorry, and 'that the only reason why he was traveling at the speeds he was going was because he believes his brother was being kidnapped in the other car that was speeding.' Stone said the passenger in Duroseau's vehicle in a deposition said they weren't chasing another vehicle because of a kidnapping. He said the passenger didn't remember what they were doing. 'Going 105 mph in that area at 7:30 at night is very reckless and I don't know, one, how he was even able to control the car at that speed in that area, but then … he hit and killed somebody,' Stone said.
