Marshawn Lynch was blowing up Pete Carroll's phone after the Raiders drafted Ashton Jeanty
For that past month at least, Ashton Jeanty has been connected with the Raiders. For many reasons. Having a need at the position lining up with the value being that Jeanty being the most highly regarded back in the draft since Saquon Barkley in 2018. But it also had to do with comparisons to Marshawn Lynch who was a key cog in Pete Carroll's offense in Seattle during their Super Bowl seasons.
Everyone else saw it, but we aren't the only ones. Apparently Marshawn saw it too. And since the moment the Raiders took Jeanty at six overall, BeastMode has been blowing up Carroll's phone.
'He's been calling all evening about it and he's pretty fired up about it," Carroll said. "There's nobody who loves the whole running game more than he does and the style and guys that have style are really special to Marshawn. There is similarities in that his ability to make plays when it doesn't look like there's anything there. And Marshawn did that throughout his career. He found a physical way to bank off of people and bounce and just keep alive. And Ashton really is a player who shows that kind of a style. That's one of the aspects of his style along with his burst and all the other things that he does as well. There's a special makeup in there and in Ashton in particular.'
It's a flattering comparison for Jeanty, but he's not shying away from it.
"Yeah, I mean even growing up, Marshawn [Lynch] was one of the first backs I started watchingand looking up to," Jeanty said over conference call after he was selected by the Raiders. "So, definitely just breaking tackles and making crazy plays down the field. There's a lot of similarities there."
When you turn on the tape, it doesn't take long to see why Jeanty has drawn Beast Mode comparisons. He averaged over five yards per carry after contact last season. That's AFTER CONTACT. Five yards per carry would be impressive as a total number. To do that after contract is absolutely bonkers.
Just look at a few runs Nate Tice posted of Jeanty vs Penn State. One of those runs the DT played perfectly. And Jeanty beat him in a phonebooth.
In some ways, Jeanty is actually more dynamic than Marshawn. Because Marshawn was known for his violent, relentless style. Jeanty has plenty of that, but often puts on moves that take defenders out of the play so much that he doesn't have to break a tackle. Then he has the game breaking speed afterward to separate.
Marshawn is a passionate guy. He loves ball. And it's easy to see when you watch Jeanty why his abilities would have Beast Mode get hyped. Not to mention the head coach who watched Marshawn earn that nickname for so many years in Seattle.

In his 10 professional seasons, he's caught 711 passes for 10,033 yards and 64 touchdowns, making five Pro Bowls in the process. However, he had just 44 receptions for 547 yards and four scores in 2024 with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Tyler Boyd Boyd, 30, was a second-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2016 NFL draft after three years at Pittsburgh, where he earned All-ACC honors every year. In nine seasons, he's caught 552 passes for 6,390 yards and 31 touchdowns. However, he had one of the worst seasons of his career in 2024, recording 39 receptions for 390 yards with the Tennessee Titans. Gabe Davis Davis, 26, played collegiately at UCF from 2017-19, earning All-AAC honors twice and All-American honors once before the Buffalo Bills took him in the fourth round (No. 128 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent four seasons in Buffalo, hauling in 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in 64 games. After landing a three-year, $39 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he appeared in just 10 games, catching 20 passes for 239 yards and two scores before tearing his meniscus and missing the rest of the season. Jacksonville released him in May. Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham, 32, was a first-round selection of the New York Giants in the 2014 NFL draft out of LSU, where he earned All-SEC and All-American honors in 2013. In 10 professional seasons, he's recorded 575 receptions for 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns while making two All-Pro teams and three Pro Bowls. The Super Bowl champion struggled to do anything in 2024 with the Miami Dolphins, catching just nine passes for 55 yards in nine games. Nelson Agholor Agholor, 32, entered the NFL as the Philadelphia Eagles' first-round pick (No. 20 overall) in the 2015 draft following a college career at USC that saw him earn All-Pac-12 honors twice. In his 10 seasons in the league, he's caught 389 passes for 4,858 yards and 37 touchdowns in 149 games. Quenton Nelson on Colts QB changes: 'I would be lying if I said it wasn't (frustrating)'
INDIANAPOLIS — DeForest Buckner had a message for his Colts teammates as the battle for the starting quarterback job raged between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson during training camp. A message he wanted to resonate for a franchise that has been searching for some semblance of continuity at quarterback since Andrew Luck's shocking retirement in 2019. Buckner has been in this position longer than just about anybody else in the Indianapolis locker room. Before he was traded to the Colts, Buckner spent his first four seasons in San Francisco, playing under the same kind of quarterback uncertainty he's gone through in Indianapolis, and he learned an important lesson in his time with the 49ers. 'In moments, with guys who haven't experienced certain things, sometimes I do go back to my experience in San Francisco,' Buckner said. 'Telling guys, like I've been saying, as long as we're doing our job around the quarterback position and we're doing it at a high level, we can accomplish special things. … Jimmy (Garappolo)'s my guy, and he's a great quarterback, but you see it all the time, you don't have straight-up elite quarterbacks in the Super Bowl every year, or in the playoffs.' Buckner wasn't trying to say a team doesn't need an elite quarterback to win. What he was saying is the Colts can still be successful with either player in the starting role. When Jimmy Garoppolo finally stayed healthy in San Francisco for an entire season, Buckner's 49ers reached the Super Bowl, coming within a quarter of hosting the trophy. But he is fully aware of the importance of the quarterback position. Jones will be the 15th starting quarterback of Buckner's 10 seasons in the NFL, and the star defensive tackle has been to the playoffs just twice. An ever-revolving door at quarterback is the biggest reason for the Colts' four-year playoff drought, and the constant churn at the game's most important position has taken its toll on the roster. When Jones starts the season opener against the Dolphins, he'll be the seventh different opening-day starter in Indianapolis since 2018, Luck's final NFL season. 'I would be lying if I said it wasn't (frustrating),' All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson said. 'You look around the league and just look at the consistency of having Patrick Mahomes or a quarterback behind you that's been the franchise player for years and years and years, and getting to build the chemistry with that quarterback year after year is something that there is an advantage to when it comes to o-line play.' Richardson was supposed to stop the revolving door at quarterback. Unfortunately, the 23-year-old hasn't been able to establish himself as a bona fide starter in the NFL, held back by injuries, inaccuracy and inexperience in everything asked of quarterbacks. 'Obviously, we'd all love to go into it with Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes,' assistant general manager Ed Dodds said. 'But that's not life.' Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen's decision to start Jones over Richardson left the locker room with conflicting emotions. 'I'm excited for Daniel, confident in him and his ability, what he can do for this team,' wide receiver Alec Pierce said. 'I feel for AR, that's definitely a tough spot to be in; I thought he handled it like a pro, thought they came in, had a good battle and ultimately made it a tough decision on the coaches.' Steichen made the final decision. The Indianapolis head coach consulted with principal owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon and general manager Chris Ballard before revealing the decision to the team on Tuesday, but it was ultimately his decision. 'Whoever he gave the keys to the car to was going to put us in the best position to win,' veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin said. Indianapolis is going to need its entire roster to put Jones in a position to win. When Jones led the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, he was a key cog in a full-team effort, the kind Buckner has been emphasizing ever since the Colts declared an open competition for the starting quarterback job in the offseason. 'Whoever the quarterback is, as long as we're supporting him and taking some of the pressure off of him, that's going to help us go very far,' Buckner said. 'I truly believe that.' The Colts now know the hand they're playing. And it's not time to fold now.
