India Leading Global Tech Race With Cost-Effective Innovation: Piyush Goyal

India.com17 hours ago
New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Saturday that India is emerging as a global leader in technology and innovation, driven by its young population, cost-effective R&D ecosystem, and forward-looking policies.
He asserted that India's embrace of technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing, and data analytics is helping the country move up the global growth chart. In a video message shared on the social media platform X, Goyal highlighted that India's innovation costs are significantly lower than those in Western economies.
'When we work on new technologies in India, our cost is nearly one-sixth or one-seventh of what it would be in Switzerland or Europe or America,' he said. He pointed out that with a $12 billion investment in innovation, India can effectively generate outcomes worth $100 billion -- the equivalent cost in developed nations.
Minister @PiyushGoyal delivered the keynote address at the @IITMadras Alumni Association event, Sangam 2025, in Bengaluru.

'And when we roll that money over three or four cycles, you can imagine the scale of support this fund can provide to our innovation ecosystem,' Goyal added while speaking at the IIT Madras Alumni Association's Sangam 2025 event.
The minister said that India is transforming from a job-seeking nation to one of job creators, thanks to its thriving startup and research landscape. 'Our science and technology, combined with our startup ecosystem and R&D efforts, are writing the India growth story of the future,' he said.
Goyal credited the youth of the country for driving this transformation, stating that India's young population is leading innovation, research, and technology adoption across sectors and government programmes. He further emphasised that India does not shy away from adopting new technologies, and instead views them as essential to economic growth.
'They are being absorbed in our manufacturing, services, and business sectors, helping India become the fastest-growing large economy in the world,' the minister said. 'This tech-driven approach is helping India buck the global slowdown trend and expand its presence in international trade and innovation leadership,' the Union Minister mentioned.

Brazil set to host Brics Summit, eager to avoid provoking Trump's ire

Brazil will play host to a summit of the BRICS bloc of developing economies Sunday and Monday during which pressing topics like Israel's attack on Iran, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump are expected to be handled with caution. Analysts and diplomats said the lack of cohesion in an enlarged BRICS, which doubled in size last year, may affect its ability to become another pole in world affairs. They also see the summit's moderate agenda as an attempt by member countries to stay off Trump's radar. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will have some of his priorities, such as debates on artificial intelligence and climate change, front and center for the talks with key leaders not in attendance. China's President Xi Jinping won't attend a BRICS summit for the first time since he became his country's leader in 2012. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will make an appearance via videoconference, continues to mostly avoid travelling abroad due to an international arrest warrant issued after Russia invaded Ukraine. Debate over language on hot-button topics The restraint expected in Rio de Janeiro marks a departure from last year's summit hosted by Russia in Kazan, when the Kremlin sought to develop alternatives to U.S.-dominated payment systems which would allow it to dodge Western sanctions imposed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A source involved in the negotiations told journalists Friday that some members of the group want more aggressive language on the situation in Gaza and Israel's attack on Iran. The source spoke under the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the matter publicly. Brazil wants to keep the summit as technical as possible, said Oliver Stuenkel, a professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation think tank and university. Consequently, observers expect a vague final declaration regarding Russia's war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East. As well as suiting Brazil, a watered-down and non-controversial statement may be made easier by the absences of Putin and Xi, Stuenkel said. Those two countries have pushed for a stronger anti-Western stance, as opposed to Brazil and India that prefer non-alignment. A Brazilian government official told The Associated Press Thursday that the group is expected to produce three joint statements and a final declaration, all of which less bounded by current geopolitical tensions. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the summit's preparations. Joao Alfredo Nyegray, an international business and geopolitics professor at the Pontifical Catholic University in Parana, said the summit could have played a role in showing an alternative to an unstable world, but won't do so. The withdrawal of Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the uncertainty about the level of representation for countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are confirming the difficulty for the BRICS to establish themselves as a cohesive pole of global leadership, Nyegray said. This moment demands high level articulation, but we are actually seeing dispersion. Brazil skittish in light of Trump tariffs Brazil, the country that chairs the bloc, has picked six strategic priorities for the summit: global cooperation in healthcare; trade, investment and finance; climate change; governance for artificial intelligence; peace-making and security; and institutional development. It has decided to focus on less controversial issues, such as promoting trade relations between members and global health, after Trump returned to the White House, said Ana Garcia, a professor at the Rio de Janeiro Federal Rural University. Brazil wants the least amount of damage possible and to avoid drawing the attention of the Trump administration to prevent any type of risk to the Brazilian economy, Garcia said. While Brazil will continue to advocate for the reform of Western-led global institutions, a cornerstone policy of the group, the country wants to avoid becoming the target of tariffs a predicament it has so far largely escaped. Trump has threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs against the bloc if they take any moves to undermine the dollar. Other leaders shun the summit Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Egypt's Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi will also be absent. Those two countries joined the BRICS in 2024, alongside Ethiopia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has been invited and is participating in member discussions, but it has yet to send its confirmation letter. As well as new members, the bloc has 10 strategic partner countries, a category created at last year's summit that includes Belarus, Cuba and Vietnam. That rapid expansion led Brazil to put housekeeping issues officially termed institutional development on the agenda to better integrate new members and boost internal cohesion. Despite notable absences, the summit is important for attendees, especially in the context of instability provoked by Trump's tariff wars, said Bruce Scheidl, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo's BRICS study group. The summit offers the best opportunity for emerging countries to respond, in the sense of seeking alternatives and diversifying their economic partnerships, Scheidl said. For Lula, the summit will be a welcome pause from a difficult domestic scenario, marked by a drop in popularity and conflict with Congress. The meeting also represents an opportunity to advance climate negotiations and commitments on protecting the environment before November's COP 30 climate talks in the Amazonian city of Belem. We negotiate from position of strength, not under deadlines

Bengaluru: With the Congress mocking the BJP-led NDA government over the proposed trade deal with the US, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said India negotiates from a position of strength and not under deadlines. He also accused the Congress of 'negotiating and signing agreements that were not in the national interest' during the party-led UPA government's tenure. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, had attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Indo-US trade deal, claiming the PM will 'meekly bow' to the tariff deadline set by the President Trump administration. 'India does not negotiate under deadlines. We negotiate keeping national interest in mind, and national interest is paramount in all our engagements across the world,' Goyal, Commerce and Industry minister, told reporters here. 'After the Modi government came to power, we have signed free trade agreements with Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and the four-nation EFTA (European Free Trade Association) grouping—Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein—and now with the UK last month.' According to him, India continues to engage with other developed nations, including the EU bloc of 27 countries, the US, Oman, Peru, and Chile. 'Today, India negotiates from a position of strength. We are self-confident and can compete with anybody in the world. . This is not the weak India under Congress and the UPA, which signed agreements that were not in the national interest,' he claimed. Goyal had earlier stated that India would accept the proposed trade deal with the US only when it is fully finalised and in the national interest.

India's global standing on manufacturing up: Minister Piyush Goyal

BENGALURU: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who engaged with industry leaders, startups, deep-tech innovators and VCs at an interactive session here on Saturday, said, 'The country's ease of doing business is being strengthened by regulatory simplification and expedited processes for patents and trademarks.' Goyal underlined India's improved global reputation for quality manufacturing, especially in sectors like electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and defence, while highlighting the Centre's efforts towards strengthening the country's startup and innovation ecosystem. He highlighted the government's launch of the Rs 10,000-crore Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) and the Rs 1-lakh crore R&D and Innovation (RDI) Scheme, which aims to provide long-term, low-cost capital to private R&D through a dedicated SPV. Minister for Large and Medium Industries MB Patil said that of the Rs 5.56 lakh crore worth of investment commitments made in the manufacturing sector during Invest Karnataka-2025 Global Investors Meet (GIM), Rs 3.4 lakh crore — around 62%, has already translated into formal project applications. 'This shows our post-MoU follow-up has been effective. Companies like Krones, Safran, TASL, and others have filed proposals, and many have begun groundwork,' he said. The event was organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Confederation of Indian Industry, had over 100 key stakeholders participating, and focused on innovation-led growth, India's rising global competitiveness, and the progress of investments in the state.
