Kozhikode: Many of the disaster-hit families at Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad will perform death anniversary rites and offer prayers for their beloved departed on Sunday although the tragedy's first anniversary falls only on July 30.
According to both Malayalam and Arabic calendars, the death anniversary day falls on Sunday, which corresponds to Karthika and Muharram 24, the very day when the catastrophe struck.
Underscoring the scale of the tragedy, many families are left with sole survivors who have to perform the rites for the rest of the departed family members.
For instance, Punchirimattom native Abhijith, who lost his entire family in the landslide, will find the moments all the more poignant.
He will be performing bali tharpan for five members of his family — father Subramanian (50), mother Babitha (45), sister Greeshma (25), elder brother Girijith (22) and grandmother Thayikuttty (84), all of whom were swept away by the landslide.
"The tragedy left me completely alone. It's now my responsibility to perform bali for them. We will perform the rites at Thirunelly temple early Sunday morning and go to the Puthumala burial site in the evening where I will light a lamp at the grave," said Abhijith, who is living in the house along with his aunt and uncle.

Abhijith was away in Thiruvananthapuram, where he was studying hotel management, when the disaster struck.
Like Abhijith, many others are left as the sole survivors in their families while hundreds more continue to mourn loved ones lost in the disaster.
Kalathingal Noufal from Mundakkai, who lost 11 members of the family including his wife Sajna, their two children, his parents and his brother's family, said he would spend the day with children at an orphanage at Gudalur in Tamil Nadu.
"I plan to spend time with the orphans there, share a meal with them and offer prayers later," he said. Sajna and children Mohammed Nihal and Isha are buried at the Puthumala burial ground.
The landslide that tore through the twin villages of Chooralmala and Mundakkai on July 30, 2024, claimed 298 lives, including 32 people initially reported missing and later declared dead, and left hundreds of families homeless.

DSMNRU prints over 2K braille books; to be available free of cost

Lucknow: The braille press of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) has printed over 2,000 books covering more than 30 subjects that would be accessible to visually impaired students free of cost from the academic session 2025-26. According to university officials, this move will not only improve the results of the students due to the availability of books but will also save their money. DSMNRU offers several courses for visually impaired students, such as BEd in Special Education (Visual Impairment), a Diploma in Special Education (Visual Impairment), and an MEd in Visual Impairment. "The braille press will be a major relief for our visually impaired students whose results were impacted due to the challenges they faced in procuring braille books. The best thing is that the books published are in accordance with the National Education Policy," said DSMNRU spokesperson Yashwant Virodai. He said the braille books cover various academic disciplines, including sociology, education and English literature. The university library now houses a dedicated section for these braille textbooks, making them readily available to visually impaired students. This initiative eliminates the need for students to search elsewhere for accessible study materials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Retirees Unaware Of No Deposit Car Insurance Based On Their Age OTTO Insurance Learn More Undo The braille format offers significant advantages over audiobooks, allowing students to read and review content more efficiently. Students struggle as server glitch hits final day of UG admission registration

I ndore: Hundreds of students were left anxious and helpless on Wednesday as registration portal for undergraduate (UG) college admissions crashed repeatedly on the final day. The server reportedly went down around noon, three hours before the official deadline of 3pm, leaving many students unable to submit their applications. The technical glitch created chaos, with students making multiple failed attempts to register throughout the afternoon. "I tried submitting my form at least ten times, but the site just wouldn't load or crashed midway," said Toshika Verma, a Class 12 pass out from the city. Many students rushed to nearby college help desks, but the system remained unresponsive. Senior academicians from the city confirmed that the server remained down for nearly three to four hours. "Due to high traffic on the final day, the server could not handle the load. As a result, a significant number of students missed their chance to register. The authorities should provide an extension," said GACC admissions in charge DK Gupta, . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo Students are now demanding that department of higher education extend the registration deadline, especially since many are still awaiting allotments under CUET-UG. Others pointed out that parallel counselling for NEET, engineering, and other streams are still underway, adding to the confusion. Under the college level counselling (CLC) round, students must visit colleges directly, register online, and pay fees within 24 hours of selection. Those who managed to register before the crash must complete fee payment by Thursday, after which the admission window will officially close. Registration for BEd, MEd, BPED and MPED courses will begin again from July 31 to Aug 4 for additional rounds. With over 1 lakh applicants for 8000 vacant seats across the state, intense competition is expected. Seat allotment will be done on Aug 8, and fee submission will continue till Aug 14.

Poignant scenes at ‘Hridayabhoomi' as hundreds pay tributes to victims

Kozhikode: The grave christened 'N 196' at Puthumala mass burial site for victims of Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides bears a heart-wrenching inscription on black stone: "Acha, Amma, today we are amidst guardian angels full of love and warmth. But the pain that you, our father and mother, are not with us haunts us. Still, we are trying to smile before you." On the other side of the plaque are the words 'Three Brothers', accompanied by smiling photographs of siblings Nived (10), Dhyan (7) and Ishan (4). Scattered on the grave are plastic toy trucks, jeeps and chocolates which the three were fond of. Their parents Aneesh and Sayana have been visiting the grave almost every week since the tragedy. "Chocolates were their favourite. I had a Thar jeep that they loved riding in," Aneesh recalled. "When we return, the chocolates are always gone; we like to believe they took them," said Aneesh. His mother Rajamma lay in the adjacent grave beside her grandsons. On Wednesday, the first anniversary of the tragedy in which 298 people were killed, they were not alone. Hundreds, including ministers and people's representatives, reached the burial site named 'July 30 Hridayabhoomi' to pay tributes to those killed in one of the deadliest landslide disasters Kerala had witnessed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo A total of 56 bodies and 213 body parts are buried there. Some lay in multiple graves as unidentified body parts were interred and their identities emerged only later through DNA analysis. Survivors from Mundakkai and Chooralmala offered tributes not just at the resting places of their own family members but also at those of their friends and neighbours and consoling other bereaved families. The official ceremony began at 11.30am with a guard of honour by state govt. Police officers saluted the huge board with photographs of the deceased. Ministers K Rajan, O R Kelu, P A Mohamed Riyas and other dignitaries offered floral tributes. An interfaith prayer was held at 'Hridayabhoomi'. Poignant scenes abounded when overwhelmed teachers of Vellarmala GVHSS paid tributes by placing flowers before the board bearing photographs of 32 students.
