Army chief dismisses rumours of leadership change in Pakistan

BRUSSELS: Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir addressed circulating rumours about his future role, Pakistan's strategic relations, and national security priorities, emphasizing the need for political and diplomatic balance. Addressing an event in Brussels, Field Marshal Munir dismissed recent speculations about changes in Pakistan's leadership, calling them 'completely false.' He said those spreading such rumours are opposed to both the government and the ruling elite. 'I am the protector of this country by God's will, and I do not seek any other position,' he asserted, reinforcing his commitment to national duty. The army chief noted that political reconciliation could be achieved through sincere apologies. He highlighted the importance of unity and dialogue in strengthening Pakistan's democratic institutions and political stability. Field Marshal Asim Munir stressed Pakistan's foreign policy long experience in maintaining a strategic balance between China and the United States. He said Islamabad has a long history of balancing relations between China and the United States. 'We will not sacrifice one friend for another,' he asserted. He also praised US President Donald Trump's desire for peace, noting Pakistan's initiative in recommending Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize as an example of proactive diplomacy that is now being recognized globally. 'Pakistan took the initiative in recommending the Nobel Prize for [President] Trump, now the rest of the world is following suit,' he remarked. The army chief warned India against destabilising Pakistan's peace through proxies. He also urged the Afghan government to stop policies that push the Taliban into Pakistan. 'It is our duty to avenge the blood of each Pakistani,' he said. COAS Asim Munir received a hero's welcome from overseas Pakistanis in Brussels, where he was hailed as a 'victor of war.' Defying protocol advice, he spent several hours standing to greet and meet expatriates who had traveled from far and wide. 'How can I break the hearts of those who came from afar?' he remarked, refusing to leave until he had shaken hands with every attendee. Field Marshal Asim Munir also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's dedication, noting his 18-hour workdays during the war with India and the determination shown by the cabinet. 'Their efforts reflect true commitment to Pakistan's security and resilience,' he added. Earlier, rumours began to circulate in July that President Asif Ali Zardari would be asked to step down, and that the COAS would take over the top office. However, top government officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, rejected such claims. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif put the rumours to rest last month, calling them 'mere speculation.' 'Field Marshal Asim Munir has never expressed any desire to become the president, nor is there any such plan in the offing,' Sharif had said. Before that, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had dismissed the rumours suggesting that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir intended to become the president, terming the speculation 'completely baseless and harmful to national stability'. In a statement issued on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the federal minister strongly condemned what he described as a 'negative campaign' targeting President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the army chief. 'These rumours are being deliberately spread by hostile elements and foreign agencies to undermine political stability and institutional harmony in the country,' the minister claimed. Naqvi said there was no truth to reports of President Zardari resigning or Gen Munir eyeing the presidency. 'The Chief of Army Staff has no political objectives. His only focus is on strengthening Pakistan and ensuring its stability,' he said.

Marka-e-Haq 14th August Youm-e-Azaadi: Message from M. Shehbaz Sharif. Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Today, with gratitude to Almighty Allah, I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the nation on completion of 78 years of independence of Pakistan. I pay tribute to Father of the Nation, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and the Thinker of Pakistan, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who along with other resolute leaders and workers of the Independence Movement united the nation under one vision, one mission and one goal. Their relentless efforts changed the course of the history with the establishment of an independent, ideological state, thus realizing a seemingly impossible dream into a reality. The past 78 years tell a tale of resilience, strong faith and a hope of a bright future when as a nation, we braved several difficult challenges. Despite this, Pakistan achieved a series of milestones of success and achievements in every field. From economy to sports and defence to information technology, Pakistanis with their unparalleled determination and courage have written exemplary chapters of knowledge and skills. Pakistan's great victory in Marka-e-Haq during the war imposed by India on 6-10th May 2025 has not only increased the significance of freedom, but has also enliven a new ambition and enthusiasm in the hearts of Pakistanis, which has amplified the joy and celebrations of the Independence Day. With the blessings of Almighty Allah, our brave armed forces in their fight against India revived their past glory and shattered the false pride of enemy by acting as a Bunyan-um-Marsoos - a solid fortified wall. The military capability, valour and faith of our brave soldiers and air warriors forced the enemy to kneel down. We pay tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our freedom and offer prayers for the elevation of their ranks in eternal life. It was not merely a military conquest, but also the victory of the validation of a Two-Nation Theory, which is the foundation of our dear homeland. With same passion, we stand vigilant to defend and safeguard our national interests including water resources. While expressing our resolve to protect Pakistan's sovereignty, we as a peaceful nation, reiterate our belief in the principles of peaceful coexistence and resolving the regional and global issues through dialogue and diplomacy. India also needs to demonstrate the same will for the resolution of all disputes, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Our government has given priority to the welfare of common man. A prominent step in this regard is a significant cut in the rates of electricity, which has provided an across the board relief to the general public and industries. As a Prime Minister, I particularly express my commitment that the government is utilizing all resources to make the country effectively meet the new economic, industrial and technological demands of the present era. Apart from these policies and programmes, the main source of strength behind the progress of Pakistan is our unity. Like military prowess, a strong and stable economy is also inevitable for an impregnable national defence and sovereignty, for which we all need to demonstrate the spirit of Marka-e-Haq and the Pakistan Movement. On this occasion, I want to extend my sincere invitation to all political parties and segments of the society to join hands with us in strengthening our resolve to safeguard national interests. In this way, we can unitedly and collectively make our nation successful and prosper to help realize the dream of our forefathers and martyrs, which they had envisioned in the form of establishment of Pakistan. Marka-e-Haq 14th August Youm-e-Azaadi: Message from Khawaja M. Asif, Federal Minister for Defence of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

I felicitate the entire Pakistani nation on the 78th Independence Day of Pakistan. This day marks the culmination of the historic political struggle of the Muslims of the subcontinent to establish a sovereign homeland. The creation of Pakistan through a peaceful and democratic struggle marks an unprecedented and unparalleled chapter in history. On this day, we pay homage to leaders and workers of the Pakistan movement as well as our forefathers who rendered innumerable sacrifices for Pakistan. Today, we need to set aside our differences and work committedly for the unity, integrity, and economic stability of the country in the face of current challenges. Our country has been blessed with abundant human and natural resources and it is our responsibility to utilize these for the welfare of our people. We reaffirm our moral, political, and diplomatic support to our Kashmiri brothers and sisters in their just struggle for the right to self-determination, in accordance with the United Nations resolutions. Their courage and resilience in the face of adversity remains an inspiration to us all. Today, we pay a heartfelt tribute to the Pakistan Armed Forces for their decisive and valiant response during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos. Pakistan's valiant response in broad daylight to India's cowardly aggression, and the military's swift and resolute action in the face of provocation, will be remembered in history as a chapter written in golden letters. In a rapidly changing global security environment, Pakistan's Defence capabilities continue to strengthen, ensuring peace through preparedness and unwavering vigilance. As we celebrate this Independence Day, let us renew our pledge to work together for a stronger, more prosperous, and peaceful Pakistan. Our unity, resilience, and commitment to nation building will continue to guide us towards a brighter future. Pakistan Zindabad Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
