Hezbollah's Chief: Resistance is core defense
On Wednesday, Lebanese Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem defended the group's dual path of armed resistance and political involvement, calling both 'inseparable pillars' of its identity.
Speaking at a memorial for Commander Fouad Shukr, killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut's southern suburbs on July 30, 2024, Qassem argued that Hezbollah's role extends beyond symbolic defiance, describing the resistance as a 'core element' of Lebanon's national defense alongside the army and the people.
On the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire, Qassem acknowledged relative calm but dismissed any suggestion that it implies disarmament, insisting Hezbollah's weapons are non-negotiable and remain a domestic issue.
He rejected claims of declining influence, asserting that the party's political and social roots have only deepened, while accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire 'out of fear.'
Qassem also condemned US Special Envoy Tom Barrack's recent warnings about regional escalation, claiming his visit delivered threats but received only a 'unified Lebanese call to end Israeli aggression.'
While accusing Israel of using border disputes to mask expansionist goals, he warned that settlement growth would resume the moment resistance weakens.
On the regional front, the Secretary-General described Israeli strikes in Syria as attempts to redraw borders by force, labeling the campaign 'a prototype' for regional destabilization through assassinations and territorial control.
Turning to Gaza, Qassem denounced Israeli and US actions as deliberate genocide, urging the international community to confront what he called a threat to global humanity.

Iraq launches major Beiji power plant project
Shafaq News – Saladin Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced, on Saturday, allocating the necessary funds to upgrade Iraq's electricity production, transmission, and distribution sectors nationwide. According to Al-Sudani's media office, the PM launched the first phase of construction for the Beiji Gas Power Plant 2 in Saladin province, which will have a total capacity of 1,014 megawatts. It includes the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas turbine units, each with a capacity of 169 megawatts, for a total of 1,014 megawatts. Additionally, the project will establish a new power evacuation network with seven 400-kilovolt transmission lines connected to the national grid through six main lines, along with a 132-kilovolt network comprising 16 lines dedicated to Saladin. The first two units of the plant are scheduled to come online within 27 months, with each subsequent unit expected to be commissioned every two months thereafter.

Anfal genocide: Iraqi Parliament Deputy pushes for victims' justice
Shafaq News – Baghdad On Friday, Mohsen al-Mandalawi, First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, called on the government to honor the victims of the Anfal massacre and provide compensation to their families. In a statement, al-Mandalawi described the repression and genocide carried out by the late Saddam Hussein and his regime against all segments of Iraqi society as a clear example of a tyrannical authority relying on oppression and violence to maintain power. He also urged the government and concerned bodies to preserve the memory of the victims, ensure reparations for the harm suffered, and take measures to prevent such crimes from recurring. 'We stand with the families of the victims. Their resilience, sacrifices, and determination to overcome the legacy of violence remain a powerful testament to their strength,' al-Mandalawi noted, highlighting their commitment to coexistence and building a democratic, pluralistic Iraq. On July 31, 1983, the former Baath regime rounded up more than eight thousand Kurdish men and boys—most of whom had been forcibly resettled in collective towns near Erbil. They were transported to the southern desert of Samawah and executed in one of the deadliest phases of the Anfal Campaign, later classified as genocide and ethnic cleansing.
