Penn State commit earns Student Athlete of the Week

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Champion senior student athlete Gabby Gradishar will go down as one of the most prolific softball players the school has ever seen.
'I try not to think too much, I like to base it on my ability and know that I've prepared plenty of times for this and just really keep moving one pitch at a time,' said Gradishar.
She has four varsity letters for the Golden Flashes softball team and started for three seasons. Her whole freshman year was derailed by an ACL injury, but she bounced back ever since.
In both her sophomore and junior seasons, she helped Champion advance as Regional Final runners-up.
Gradishar has multiple school records, including the single-season batting average with .640 and the career runs record. This season, she has surpassed 700 career strikeouts in just three seasons.
''I'm very competitive, it's just always been in my nature, my great uncle played at Ohio State and then played for the Broncos, so I think it started from there,' said Gradishar. 'But I've really just loved trying to win everything that I play.'
Gradishar's great uncle is former Denver Broncos great Randy Gradishar. The Warren native graduated from Champion High School and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.
Gradishar also tied the OHSAA state record for the most home runs in a single season with 23 in her junior year.
She received All-State First Team honors in her sophomore and junior seasons. She even made it on the MaxPreps All-American Second Team her junior year.
'It's not the same game every single time you play,' said Gradishar. 'It's different, it's a game of failure and if you're good at it, you can learn to get past that and keep moving forward.'
Other than softball, she was on Champion's varsity basketball team her freshman year but only played six games due to the ACL injury.
Outside of Champion, most of her time was spent playing travel softball for the Thunder Elites. But, she spent time on the Champion Student Council her freshman year and is currently a student ambassador for the Trumbull Career & Technical Center.
Gradishar has been a coach for youth softball teams, personally mentoring young softball players, and has conducted Champion youth softball camps.
'I was in their shoes once and looking up to me, I had many mentors looking up to as well. It just really makes me happy to see that they're wanting to learn and wanting to play the game,' said Gradishar.
She volunteers for TCTC school events, helps out with her church and the Red Barn Goofy Newfy Rescue which specializes in finding homes for dogs.
She will graduate Champion with a 4.0 GPA. Upon graduation, she will attend Penn State to play softball for the Nittany Lions and major in kinesiology.
'I love being a part of this team, it's really great to know that it's a legacy of softball here, and just growing up, it was always a dream of mine,' said Gradishar. 'A lot of young girls look up to us, not just me, but the whole team, and it's a really good feeling.
Gradishar is currently leading the Golden Flashes in the OHSAA Division V tournament, looking for a state title.

Patriots beat Vikings 20-12 as rookies Henderson and Chism each record another preseason TD

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New England rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Efton Chism III each had another preseason touchdown, and the Patriots beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-12 on Saturday. Henderson, the second-round draft pick from national champion Ohio State who's been turning heads in training camp and tracking toward a prominent role in the backfield, rushed for 20 yards with an 8-yard score on four carries during a two-drive stint for the first-team offense. Henderson had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week. The Patriots held a handful of projected starters out, including four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who's returning from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered halfway through his lone season with the Houston Texans. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye started against an all-backups Vikings defense and went 4 for 7 for 46 yards with a delay-of-game penalty and an overthrow that was nearly intercepted but dropped by Tavierre Thomas. Chism made another compelling case for a regular-season roster spot with six receptions from backup QB Joshua Dobbs for 71 yards and a score. He caught a short throw on third-and-9 from the 12 and broke six tackle attempts as he twisted and muscled his way into the end zone. With Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and veterans Kendrick Bourne and Mack Hollins on the Patriots' roster, there might be only one opening for a wide receiver. Chism, who was undrafted out of Eastern Washington, will certainly get a long look. He had a 12-yard touchdown catch last week. Vikings play it safe The two teams had two days of joint practices this week, providing plenty of valuable tests for players in situational drills in a controlled setting, and Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell was more than satisfied with the work. Not a single projected starter on either side of the ball suited up for Minnesota, and several key backups who are locks to make the team were given the afternoon off, too. New quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who led one 12-play drive last week, wore an earpiece on the sideline while Sam Howell started. Howell, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in April after the veteran backup market dried up, went 1 for 5 with an interception he forced off his back foot under pressure. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who has been the best of the backups in camp, went 15 for 27 for 156 yards while playing the whole second half. His final throw from the 13-yard line on the last play of the game was tipped and intercepted in the end zone by Kyle Dugger. ___

Broncos' updated depth chart for preseason game vs. Cardinals

The Denver Broncos are set to face the Arizona Cardinals in their second preseason game tonight (Aug. 16). Ahead of that matchup, the Broncos released an updated depth chart, but fans should take it with a grain of salt. NFL rules require the team to release a depth chart during preseason. It has become clear over the last two years, though, that coach Sean Payton does not take the preseason depth chart very seriously, and he only releases it because the team is required to. Denver calls it an "unofficial" depth chart, despite it coming straight from the team. This year, Payton has continued his trend of making rookies prove their worth by placing them below veterans across the depth chart. So, while keeping in mind that it should be taken with a grain of salt, here's a look at the Broncos' "unofficial" depth chart going into Week 2 of NFL preseason. Denver Broncos Depth Chart Quarterback (3) No surprises on the quarterback depth chart. Stidham will serve as the primary backup again this season, and Ehlinger might be bumped down to the practice squad when the 53-man roster is set at the end of preseason. Running back (6) It wouldn't be shocking to see the Broncos carry four running backs on the active roster. Don't read into Harvey being listed as RB6 on the initial list -- Payton's initial depth charts are never kind to rookies. Tight end/fullback (7) Engram is the team's top receiving threat at the position, and Trautman is safe as a blocking TE. Burton is back as the team's fullback, and Adkins fills a hybrid role. Krull, Lohner and Prieskorn might be competing for one final spot. Wide receiver (12) If the Broncos plan to carry six receivers on the 53-man roster, the favorites are pretty easy to project. But everyone will get an opportunity to impress this summer. Offensive line (16) All five starting offensive linemen from last year are returning, so the competitions will be for the backup spots this summer. The interior backups will be asked to play both guard and center, and the backup tackles should be able to play on the left and right in a pinch. Defensive line (10) Third-round pick Sai'vion Jones improves the team's depth, and Eyioma Uwazurike will look to have a breakthrough campaign in his second season back from a gambling suspension. Outside linebacker (7) Denver's already-deep room got even deeper this spring when the team drafted Robinson, but his biggest contributions might come on special teams as a rookie. Inside linebacker (9) The inside linebacker competition will be fascinating to watch this summer. Singleton is coming back from a torn ACL, and he'll turn 32 in December. Bailey has impressed early in camp, so he'll be a key player to watch in preseason. Cornerback (10) Again, don't read into Barron being buried as a rookie. He is likely set to serve as the team's nickelback this season with McMillian providing depth. Safety (8) It's hard to predict how the safety room will shake out, but there are several contenders to win a spot on the active roster based on their special teams contributions. Special teams (3) Jackson will be a UDFA to watch this summer as he'll potentially get a good amount of reps both at receiver and on special teams. Denver will trim the roster down to 53 players by Aug. 26, then the club will build a 16- or 17-player practice squad. Last year, the team's initial practice squad included Burton, Tillman, Bailey and Badie. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

ESPN Offers Shocking Future Prediction for Cardinals QB Kyler Murray

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Arizona Cardinals may not be a lock to make the NFL playoffs this season, but they do appear to have a competitive roster. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is entering his second year and still seems to have a ton of potential, while running back James Conner and tight end Trey McBride add plenty of offensive firepower. On the other side of the football, veterans Calais Campbell, Dalvin Tomlinson and Josh Sweat will look to improve a defense that was in the middle of the pack in 2024. But of course, the Cardinals' fortunes largely rest on the shoulders of quarterback Kyler Murray. While Murray has played relatively well in the past, not too many are convinced he's the type of player whose team can win big games because of him rather than simply having him along for the ride. Read more: Steelers' Mike Tomlin Makes Major Aaron Rodgers Decision ESPN recently published a future power rankings article, in which Arizona was ranked 17th. Seth Walder, one of the contributors to that article, gave a shocking prediction about Murray's future with the team. "The Cardinals will trade quarterback Kyler Murray before the 2027 season," Walder wrote. "After two seasons in which they are competitive but not threatening true contention, they will decide to deal Murray -- who will have two non-guaranteed years left on his deal at that point -- rather than extend him again. Arizona will recoup real draft capital in the deal from a team that will instantly upgrade at the most important position." Murray, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, won a slew of individual awards, including the Heisman Trophy, while throwing for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns and adding 1,001 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground as a senior at the University of Oklahoma. That year, he led the Sooners to an Orange Bowl appearance, and he also had an excellent season playing center field for their baseball team and was even drafted by Major League Baseball's Oakland As. Upon arriving in the NFL, Murray made the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2021. But he tore his ACL during the 2022 campaign, and while he had a solid 2024 campaign, it has become apparent that he's good but not great. Kyler Murray #1 of the Arizona Cardinals walks across the field in the second quarter against the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium on December 08, 2024 in Glendale, Arizona. Kyler Murray #1 of the Arizona Cardinals walks across the field in the second quarter against the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium on December 08, 2024 in Glendale, his modest stature (he's 5-foot-10 and 207 pounds) is likely what is holding him back in terms of becoming a championship-caliber signal-caller. While he can be a squirrel in the open field when he takes off to move the chains himself, his lack of height likely limits his field vision as a passer. If they are to become a competitive and respectable NFL franchise, they may have to make the type of hairy, audacious move Walder predicted.
