Bolt of Italy blue delivers Europe T20WC Qualifier intrigue ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, 2025
The fight for two ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 qualification spots will be fierce in the Dutch city of Voorburg, with Jersey, Guernsey and a bolstered Italian team certain to push Scotland and the hosts in a fascinating European Regional Final. Led by recently-appointed captain Joe Burns, the upcoming tournament is the Azzurri's best chance of breaking new ground and claiming a maiden T20 World Cup ticket, coming in with arguably their best ever squad to challenge their more-credentialed opponents. While lamenting the unavailable Wayne Madsen, the side do enjoy the services of Emilio Gay and Grant Stewart, on top of Burns and the Manenti brothers of Ben and Harry. Italy v Romania | Match Highlights | Men's T20WC Europe Sub-regional Qualifier A Italy v Romania | Match Highlights | Men's T20WC Europe Sub-regional Qualifier A Italy fell a win short of qualification in the equivalent qualifier in 2023, though responded in emphatic fashion to begin their qualification journey to T20 World Cup 2026, going largely unchallenged in an undefeated Sub-Regional campaign last year to secure their spot for the upcoming tournament. Ireland legend Kevin O'Brien, part of Italy's coaching staff, says the side have enjoyed a strong preparation coming in. "I think we've identified where we went wrong last time in Scotland (in the last cycle). We've looked at trying to change that, over the past few months or so," the Assistant coach said. "We're well set after the two warm-up games this week, and we had a nice camp in Horsham (Sussex) where we played three games. "All in all, I think it's coming together, (and) the confidence is high in the group and we've got some very experienced players in the team, experience from all over the world as well. "Fingers crossed we can we can play some smart cricket over the next six or seven days and look to qualify for the World Cup, which would be absolutely huge for Italian cricket and would really push the federation forward in terms of where it needs to be to continue to make the strides off the pitch, (and) to match the strides we've made on the pitch over the last two or three years." Hard work starts now with cricket on the rise in Italy *Cricket Italy are one of the fastest growing countries in Europe with now more than 100 cricket clubs and a new Schools Programme with #criiio at the heart of it.* Jersey and Guernsey also come into the Regional Final, having also emerged victorious from Sub-Regional action. Led by Oli Nightingale, Guernsey bounced back from a shock defeat to Finland to eventually reach their Sub-Regional final, brushing aside a strong Danish side on the final day to book their Regional Final tickets in August last year. They will lean on the bowling work of Charlie Forshaw and the experience of Matthew Stokes with the bat. Denmark v Guernsey | Match Highlights | Men's T20WC Sub-Regional Europe Qualifier C Denmark v Guernsey | Match Highlights | Men's T20WC Sub-Regional Europe Qualifier C Jersey, who have bragging rights over their Channel Islander neighbours after their recent Inter-Insular series will again be led by canny all-rounder Chuggy Perchard, though have a selection complication with standout Asa Tribe likely fitting his output around Glamorgan duties. Jersey v Belgium | Match Highlights | Men's T20WC Europe Sub-regional Qualifier B Jersey v Belgium | Match Highlights | Men's T20WC Europe Sub-regional Qualifier B Despite the push of the other three challengers, Scotland and The Netherlands remain favourites for the two spots, and even with the Dutch forced into a squad shuffle. Missing the likes of Logan van Beek and Colin Ackermann, Vikramjit Singh has also been left out of the Dutch squad, though there has been a recall for fast bowler Hidde Overdijk, having last appeared for the men in an official international five years ago. The Dutch should thrive in home conditions, coming off a solid recent tri-series in Scotland, testing their bottle in a heart-stopping triple Super Over win against Nepal in a recent tri-series in Scotland. Netherlands end South Africa semi-final dream with shock win | Match Highlights | T20WC 2022 Match Highlights: Netherlands upsets South Africa's semi-final chances with thrilling win at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 The Scots come in as the highest-ranked team at the tournament (13th), and come in with the likes of George Munsey, Brandon McMullen and Michael Leask in imposing batting form. Fellow European sides England and Ireland were automatic qualifiers for next year's T20 World Cup after the 2024 edition. ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, 2025News

Penn State commit earns Student Athlete of the Week
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Champion senior student athlete Gabby Gradishar will go down as one of the most prolific softball players the school has ever seen. 'I try not to think too much, I like to base it on my ability and know that I've prepared plenty of times for this and just really keep moving one pitch at a time,' said Gradishar. She has four varsity letters for the Golden Flashes softball team and started for three seasons. Her whole freshman year was derailed by an ACL injury, but she bounced back ever since. In both her sophomore and junior seasons, she helped Champion advance as Regional Final runners-up. Gradishar has multiple school records, including the single-season batting average with .640 and the career runs record. This season, she has surpassed 700 career strikeouts in just three seasons. ''I'm very competitive, it's just always been in my nature, my great uncle played at Ohio State and then played for the Broncos, so I think it started from there,' said Gradishar. 'But I've really just loved trying to win everything that I play.' Gradishar's great uncle is former Denver Broncos great Randy Gradishar. The Warren native graduated from Champion High School and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. Gradishar also tied the OHSAA state record for the most home runs in a single season with 23 in her junior year. She received All-State First Team honors in her sophomore and junior seasons. She even made it on the MaxPreps All-American Second Team her junior year. 'It's not the same game every single time you play,' said Gradishar. 'It's different, it's a game of failure and if you're good at it, you can learn to get past that and keep moving forward.' Other than softball, she was on Champion's varsity basketball team her freshman year but only played six games due to the ACL injury. Outside of Champion, most of her time was spent playing travel softball for the Thunder Elites. But, she spent time on the Champion Student Council her freshman year and is currently a student ambassador for the Trumbull Career & Technical Center. Gradishar has been a coach for youth softball teams, personally mentoring young softball players, and has conducted Champion youth softball camps. 'I was in their shoes once and looking up to me, I had many mentors looking up to as well. It just really makes me happy to see that they're wanting to learn and wanting to play the game,' said Gradishar. She volunteers for TCTC school events, helps out with her church and the Red Barn Goofy Newfy Rescue which specializes in finding homes for dogs. She will graduate Champion with a 4.0 GPA. Upon graduation, she will attend Penn State to play softball for the Nittany Lions and major in kinesiology. 'I love being a part of this team, it's really great to know that it's a legacy of softball here, and just growing up, it was always a dream of mine,' said Gradishar. 'A lot of young girls look up to us, not just me, but the whole team, and it's a really good feeling. Gradishar is currently leading the Golden Flashes in the OHSAA Division V tournament, looking for a state title. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
