Andhra Pradesh government to introduce programmes in Quantum Technologies and AI in engineering and degree colleges

The State government has decided to introduce minor programmes in Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in both engineering and conventional degree colleges from the academic year 2025-26.
An expert committee, constituted by the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) to design and develop a robust curriculum framework for Quantum Computing, Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI), in alignment with the National Education Police (NEP), 2020 and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) guidelines, met on Sunday (June 22).
The meeting, headed by APSCHE Chairman K. Madhu Murthy, discussed key aspects of the curriculum design, capacity-building, development of a Quantum Lab and research, innovation and start-ups.
Former Special Secretary, Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Ganta Subba Rao, who is also a member of the committee, said quantum technology represents an emerging field poised to revolutionise numerous sectors, from computing and sensing to communication. Its transformative potential necessitates a specialised workforce capable of navigating its complexities and driving its development.
After a thorough round of discussion, it was decided to introduce a Minor Degree in Quantum Technologies (Engineering stream) for 18 credits, a Minor Degree in Artificial Intelligence (Engineering and General streams) for 18 credits and a Minor Degree in Quantum Technologies (General Degree stream) for 16 credit points
The meeting also decided to conduct Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) for 500 faculty in physics, electronics, mathematics and computer science disciplines.
The committee members also proposed to set up Quantum Labs at Andhra University, JNTU-Kakinada, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Sri Venkateswara University, JNTU-Anantapur and Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT)

VISAKHAPATNAM: A petrified fossil wood specimen, believed to date back approximately 160 million years, has been donated to the Botany Department Museum at Andhra University. The fossil was handed over by former Chief Conservator of Forests Ampili Bharat Kumar. According to Battula Janaki Ram, Regional Coordinator of the Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Board, the specimen was collected from the stream bank of the Yamanapalli (Vemanpalli) region in Mancherial district, Telangana in 1987. Faculty members of the Department of Botany, including Head of the Department Prof D Sandhya Deepika, Prof PK Ratna Kumar, Prof SB Padal, Dr P Balarama Swamy Yadav, Dr Dora, and museum curator Dr J Prakasa Rao, formally received the fossil, and deposited it in the museum's collection. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sandhya noted that the fossil likely dates back to the Jurassic period, often referred to as the 'Age of Dinosaurs'. She added that further scientific studies are necessary to confirm its precise age and classification. She further expressed that the fossil is expected to support ongoing academic research, and contribute to educational exhibits within the university.

Visakhapatnam: The Uddanam region in Srikakulam district continues to battle a high prevalence of chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology (CKDu). A recent study underscores the multifactorial nature of the condition, linking it to a complex web of social, lifestyle, and health-related determinants. Individuals from lower hierarchical castes are disproportionately affected, and limited educational attainment significantly increases vulnerability. In Uddanam, where nearly one-third of the population is illiterate, lack of education stands out as a major risk factor—particularly among farmers and daily wage labourers engaged in paddy and cashew cultivation. Physical activity was found to be protective, with higher levels associated with reduced proteinuria—an early marker of kidney damage—and improved CKDu outcomes. In contrast, lifestyle behaviours such as tobacco use and consumption of locally brewed alcohol were strongly correlated with increased disease risk. Hypertension emerged as a critical contributor, with nearly half the population affected. This condition accelerates disease progression and increases the likelihood of end-stage renal failure, requiring dialysis or transplantation. Their findings were published in the African Journal of Biological Sciences. The retrospective case-control study involved 2,806 participants from two CKD hotspots—Kaviti and Kanchili. It included 1,001 CKD cases and 1,001 matched controls from Kaviti, and 404 cases with 404 controls from Kanchili. A significant difference in water intake was observed between affected and healthy individuals, reinforcing earlier research that links low fluid consumption to kidney disease. "Our study highlights the significant impact of socioeconomic disparities, lifestyle behaviours, hypertension, and comorbid conditions on CKDu prevalence in Uddanam," the researchers stated. "Physical activity emerged as a protective factor, while limited education and lower caste status were major contributors. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to reduce disease burden and improve outcomes. " The study also revealed stark differences in healthcare costs between CKDu patients and healthy individuals. Expenses for transport, diagnosis, and medication rise sharply with disease severity. Patients in stages IV and V incur significantly higher treatment costs than those in earlier stages or healthy controls. FDP to equip faculty, research scholars with quantum computing insights

Visakhapatnam: To enhance knowledge and skills of faculty members in quantum computing and enable them to address complex real-world challenges through the design and development of quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms, Andhra University is going to organise a five-day faculty development programme (FDP) on Quantum Computing from August 28. The FDP , titled 'quantum computing insights for academics – concepts, applications and tools', aims to equip faculty members and researchers with foundational, advanced knowledge in the emerging field of quantum computing. Ahead of the poster launch, Andhra University Vice Chancellor GP Raja Sekhar stated that the platform would familiarise faculty members and research scholars with quantum computing applications such as surveillance, healthcare, geology, cyber security, emergency management and remote sensing. Through the FDP, participants will gain substantial knowledge of quantum computing and its potential in solving real-world problems. They will be equipped to design and implement quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms for academic and practical applications. The FDP programme that equips faculty and research scholars with practical insights into quantum computing and quantum machine learning (QML), will continue till September 1. Participants will receive guidance from leading experts, including professors from IITs, NITs, IIITs, scientists from NISER Bhubaneswar, and professionals from various industries.
