Leakage in two private water supply and sewer connections is being blamed for the incident, though the MC sewer line remained unaffected by it.
The road was a choc-a-bloc with pedestrians and vehicles heading to family members and relatives for Raksha Bandhan when the crater was noticed. One of the commuters, SBS Nagar's Arvind Sharma, immediately raised an alarm. The crater was so deep that the water flowing underground could be seen, he said.
Civic officials quickly swung into action and parked a trolley there to stop the movement of heavy vehicles to avoid any untoward incident and prevent any further damage to the road.They said the road caved in at 7.30am owing to leakage at two separate points, and that the leakage has been plugged.
However, activist Arvind Sharma said, "There are several such stretches in the city where a disaster is waiting to happen. Some have small craters, which will only get bigger, if the authorities don't recarpet the roads."
He alleged that even in the case of Pakhowal Road, the rectification of the damaged portion by MC is merely an eyewash.

Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu orders precautionary measures as Krishna inflows rise
Vijayawada: With forecasts predicting continued heavy rainfall across Andhra Pradesh, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu convened a high-level meeting with ministers and officials to assess the situation and initiate precautionary measures. He instructed departments to remain on high alert, monitor inflows into the Krishna river and its tributaries, and take steps to prevent flooding. The irrigation officials informed the chief minister that inflows into the Krishna river have reached 3 lakh cusecs and could rise to 5 lakh cusecs by Thursday. All incoming water is currently being discharged into the sea. Naidu directed officials to issue timely alerts to residents in low-lying areas and relocate them if necessary. He also asked MAUD officials to clear stagnant water from roads and urban pockets immediately. In addition to flood mitigation, Naidu emphasized the strategic use of excess water.
