Artificial intelligence is undeniably among the coolest technologies in recent memory — making science fiction science fact.
It's not a stretch to see how it will change everything, including banking. It's also easy to understand people's sense of unease, given the many dystopian science fiction tales involving AI.
Prairie folk are among the most skeptical of AI as a life-improving technology, a new study by TD shows, finding 35 per cent of Manitoba and Saskatchewan respondents trust AI as a technology.
That's compared with the national average of 43 per cent.
This scepticism may stem from unfamiliarity, with 40 per cent of all respondents giving themselves a 'C' in AI-related knowledge.
This is all fine and somewhat informative, but why is a Big Bank interested in our AI familiarity and trust?
Like other financial institutions, TD has been working with the technology on behind-the-scenes processes and looking to offer consumer-friendly AI tools.
'The first thing to address is how AI can make supporting our customers better,' says Aitor del Coso, vice-president of analytics, insights and AI, Canadian personal banking at TD.
That consumers are a bit suspicious of AI is understandable, especially with respect to their money, he says.
But both consumers and financial institutions recognize the potential for AI-enabled banking tools can be a positive — helping us save, budget, manage debt and invest, presumably better.
Already, TD plans to introduce a generative AI search engine for its employees to find solutions for clients within its own datasets — i.e. its own banking protocols — later this year, he says.
It also has evolving AI tools for portfolio managers and analysts to be able to gain better insights and make better investing decisions.
In the next few years, if not sooner, consumer-facing tools will emerge.
'Right now, we're working on ensuring there are the right guardrails in place,' says del Coso. 'We don't want it providing the wrong advice or insights.'
He notes most financial institutions like TD already do a good job of serving clients through existing means. Decades of trust have been built while carefully layering on new technologies and services.
The last thing any bank wants to do is introduce a clunky tool — particularly using a technology prone to hallucinating erroneous responses.
Indeed, AI can go off the rails more than we realize. One study by Columbia Journalism Review found all generative AI search tools averaged making errors about 60 per cent of the time when citing its sources when asked a news-related question.
Its potential for mistakes is why major financial institutions are going slow, even though they have collectively hit a wall with customer satisfaction in a recent survey.
'There is really not much movement year-over-year, in terms of improvement,' says Sean Gelles, senior director in payments intelligence at J.D. Power.
Speaking about the findings in J.D. Power's recent Canadian consumer online banking and mobile app studies, he adds most consumers are generally satisfied with the banks' performance. Yet the banks pack together in scoring, ranging about a B- to B+. The scores have been steady in recent years with little growth.
AI could change things, however.
'There hasn't been a lot of innovation in that space,' Gelles says, adding a new generative AI tool could put the 'wow' back into banking.
Yet banks' trepidation makes sense given these are massive, complex organizations. Most banks are not into risk-taking first-movers — unlike big tech companies, which have embraced generative AI.
That said, banks 'are investing heavily in AI,' he notes, pointing to fraud detection as one current use for the technology.
The innovation elsewhere is coming to the financial industry. Small fintech companies are already pushing it.
One area is the fast-growing buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) market. An old concept for large purchases like appliances, AI has powered BNPL to be used at the checkout in-person or online quickly for much smaller buys. It is a great option so long as you can pay the instalments on time, because then you don't pay interest, says Natasha Macmillan, senior director of everyday banking at Ratehub.ca.
AI is key to the speed of approval, facilitating underwriting in real-time of the loans to consumers to make purchases. It can also match consumers with BNPL who are most suitable for this type of loan.
While BNPL can help people on tight budgets stretch their finances further in a pinch, BNPL providers 'bank on people overextending themselves,' Macmillan notes, adding interest rates can reach 35 per cent when people fail to pay on time.

The loans do not affect credit ratings yet — though one provider in the U.S. is starting soon. No doubt it might be warranted given BNPL's growth, expected to be a $15-
billion market in Canada by 2030. It's already a much bigger deal in the U.S., where about half of consumers use credit cards to extend purchasing power — and run balances.
A recent New York Times article noted Americans took out US$100 billion in BNPL loans in 2023. One report from its federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found two-thirds of those loans went to risky borrowers, stacking these loans onto credit card debt.
All of this points to consumers needing to beware of new-fangled technologies in finance. Based on the TD survey findings, it seems the people of the Prairies have good reason to be wary.

Canada's proposed east-west energy corridors should prioritize clean energy

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has made establishing east-west energy corridors a priority for Canada. He suggested that such corridors would include new oil and natural gas pipelines, designed to reduce dependence on the United States. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson has gone even further in pushing for subsidization of carbon capture and storage projects that would effectively underwrite the long-term continuation of the fossil fuel industry at taxpayer expense. While there might be short-term political reasons for backing fossil fuels, such an approach goes against Canada's long-term interests. Prioritizing fossil fuels undermines the country's commitments to reduce emissions and takes away the investment needed for it to realize its potential to become a green energy superpower. Creating energy corridors is in the national interest, and would allow Canada to take full advantage of its abundant and diverse energy and mineral resources. The government also needs to be involved, as the corridors are interprovincial and will require substantial investment. However, the government has limited resources and so Canada must think strategically about its priorities for such corridors. Canadian taxpayers should not be subsidizing an already lucrative oil and gas industry. Instead, the federal government should prioritize funding clean energy supply solutions. Canadian governments have long faced opposition to building new pipelines. The provinces of Quebec and British Columbia and many First Nations have strongly opposed new pipeline proposals. More recently, there is some signs of softening under the duress of U.S. tariffs. Even if such shifts are lasting, it's for the private sector to step up and invest into these projects. Previous federal investments, such as the Trans Mountain pipeline (TMX), were reflections of the private market's unwillingness to invest in pipelines because they are bad investments. The 2024 Parliamentary Budget Office report estimated that selling the TMX would result in a loss. There are reasons to question the soundness of fossil fuels on a purely financial basis. A 2022 Parliamentary budget office report found that climate change reduced GDP by 0.8 per cent in 2021, or around $20 billion. This number is expected to rise to 5.8 per cent per year by 2100 (or $145 billion in 2021 dollars). By contrast, from 2017 to 2021, federal, provincial and territorial governments received an average of $12 billion annually in revenues from the the oil and gas industry. The gap between the costs and benefits is only going to increase over time. The costs cut across all aspects of life, including food security, health care, global instability and threats to coastal cities due to sea level rise. On the other hand, every dollar invested in adaptation today has an estimated return of $13-$15. Furthermore, a recent study indicates a likely glut in global natural gas markets, and the future prospects for oil are equally questionable. For example, one of Canada's target markets, Japan, has been reselling its liquefied natural gas imports to other countries, suggesting the glut of oil and gas is likely to continue as cheaper producers, including those in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, who are cheaper and closer to consumers, flood the market. Cheaper and closer oil producers are also flooding markets in anticipation of declining prices. There are important opportunity costs of investing money in fossil fuels that could otherwise be invested in the clean energy economy. When new technologies arise, there is a limited window of opportunity for global competitors to enter into an emerging industry. In light of the shift to electric vehicles, heat pumps and artificial intelligence, it's clear that energy demand is bound to increase significantly in Canada in the coming years. Canada can become a global competitor, but only if it enters the race now, while the window is open. Solar and wind prices have declined by 83 per cent and 65 per cent respectively since 2009. However, they suffer from the fundamental issue of intermittency; the sun is not always shining and the wind isn't always blowing. While battery prices are declining, they remain an expensive solution. An easier solution is at hand: Canada's hydroelectric resources. Quebec, B.C. and Manitoba have abundant hydro resources that can reduce energy costs throughout the rest of the country. Alberta and Saskatchewan have potential for significant geothermal power generation. Ontario and the Atlantic provinces could contribute wind and solar. Trading electricity through an integrated national grid increases the investment capital and reduces the need for batteries while diversifying the energy mix. But we need an east-west electricity market to make this happen. An east-west grid would reduce the need for every province to run its own power generation system. Creating a pooled market would allow provinces to trade electricity, giving consumers more choice and investors a larger market and potential return on their investment. More valuable still is the fact that electricity capacity has to be built for the few peak hours and seasons. But most of the time demand is well below full capacity, such as the middle of the night or early summer, when neither heat nor air conditioning is needed in many areas. As peak times and seasons vary across the country, Canada can reduce overall costs by trading the electricity in the lowest cost producing province at a given time to where it's needed in the other. By locating some of the new clean energy in First Nations, Canada can also move reconciliation forward. There is potential for a win-win situation whereby Canada increases renewable energy generation while creating new jobs and income for First Nations wherever feasible. The first step is for regulatory reform across the provinces to support a Canada-wide electricity market, and to provide the funding for the massive infrastructure investment required to connect provincial grids. This would be a federal investment with incredible long-term payoffs for employment, taxpayers and future generations. Following this plan could truly make Canada an energy superpower on the right side of the energy transition, create thousands of jobs and give the country a global competitive edge - all while helping to save the planet in the process.

Prediction: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Stock Is the Safest AI Chip Bet

The company could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of autonomous driving as well. 10 stocks we like better than Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing › Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) may not design artificial intelligence (AI) chips, but it's a company that every AI chipmaker relies on. The AI giants rely on TSMC to manufacture their number-crunching chip designs. That's why TSMC is the safest long-term play in the AI infrastructure space. Let's look at what makes the company so special. The foundry leader TSMC is the world's most advanced semiconductor foundry, and it counts the world's leading chip designers among its top customers, including Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Apple. It has the scale and technological leadership that rivals can't match. Intel has been burning cash trying to establish its foundry business, while Samsung's yield issues continue to be an issue. That has given TSMC a huge market share lead in the advanced node market, and it's not particularly close. Nodes refer to the size of the transistors used on a chip, measured in nanometers. The smaller the node, the more transistors can be packed onto the chip, which boosts performance and power efficiency. Smaller nodes are becoming a bigger part of TSMC's mix. Chips made on 7nm and smaller nodes made up 73% of its revenue in the first quarter, up from 65% a year ago. Its 3nm node accounted for 22% of revenue, and Apple has booked much of its 2nm supply for future products. Even Intel has been using TSMC's 3nm tech for some of its most advanced chips. That says a lot. TSMC's clear leadership in the space has also given the company strong pricing power. Between increasing demand and higher prices, this is driving both strong revenue growth and improved gross margins. Last quarter, its revenue jumped 35% to $25.5 billion, led by growth in high-performance computing (HPC). That continued in Q2, with the company reporting preliminary revenue growth of 39% to $31.9 billion, as estimated by Reuters. Margins remain strong despite new fabs ramping. Gross margin rose 190 basis points to 58.8% in Q1 despite its Arizona and Japan fabs still ramping up and weighing on profitability. TSMC expects these newer facilities to dilute margins by 2 to 3 percentage points this year, but the company is already raising prices to offset the pressure. According to reports, TSMC will increase AI chip prices this year, with Arizona-made chips potentially commanding a 30% premium. TSMC's business risks TSMC is not entirely without risks. Geopolitical tensions around Taiwan will always be part of the story, and it's not immune to tariffs and policy shifts in the U.S. However, TSMC is already addressing both by expanding its footprint globally. The company has been building new fabs in the U.S., Japan, and Europe in partnership with its largest customers. However, what makes TSMC the safest AI semiconductor stock is its position in the semiconductor value chain. It ultimately doesn't matter which company wins the AI chip race. TSMC's success is tied to overall AI chip demand, not any one company's products. AI chip demand isn't slowing down, either. TSMC previously projected AI-related revenue to grow at a mid-40% compounded average growth rate (CAGR) over the next five years, starting in 2024. It's also working closely with customers to time its capacity expansion accordingly. With its top customers booking future supply, it has solid visibility into future growth. Meanwhile, it could see a tailwind beyond AI with autonomous driving. Robotaxis are beginning to take off and gain traction, and all of those vehicles will need to be fitted with advanced chips. It's still early, but if robotaxis and autonomous driving become commonplace, TSMC will be a big beneficiary. Time to buy the stock In the AI chip battle, TSMC is essentially the AI arms dealer. It doesn't need to bet on who will dominate the chip market, because it sells manufacturing services to all of them. For investors who want exposure to AI semiconductors without betting on a single chipmaker, TSMC is the safest way to play it. The stock is also attractively valued, trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 24 times based on analysts' 2025 estimates and a price/earnings-to-growth ratio (PEG) of less than 0.7. Stocks with PEG ratios below 1 are typically considered undervalued. Taken all together, TSMC is one of the best and safest stocks to buy in the semiconductor space right now.
