49Ers Sign LB Warner to Massive Extension

Epoch Times5 days ago

Fred Warner has officially become the highest-paid inside linebacker in the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers signed Warner to a three-year, $63 million extension. Warner has led the team in tackles every year since he was drafted by the team, and holds a number of team records. He is also a 4-time Pro Bowler and a four-time All-Pro.
'Fred's leadership is exemplary and his approach to his craft is contagious,' 49ers President of Football Operations and General Manager John Lynch said in an
'Fred sets the tone for our entire team with the consistency, speed and physicality with which he plays. Off the field, his passion, energy, and professionalism are second to none and truly embody what it means to be a Niner. We are extremely proud to get this extension done and lock Fred in for the future.'
'We're here to stay, baby,' Warner said in a selfie video posted to the team's page on
'It was a dream when I got drafted here in 2018 and it's still a dream to this day. I know we've been through some great times these first seven years, but the story is only beginning, and we know what we're after. Let's go chase it, let's go get it.'

According to Spotrac, Warner's deal includes $56 million in guaranteed money. His contract is third among all NFL inside linebackers in total value, while his $21 million annual salary is the highest in the league at his position.
The 49ers drafted Warner out of Brigham Young University in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He won the starting job in his rookie season and has started every game of his seven-year career.
Warner has also led the team in tackles in each of his seven seasons, and his record of 896 career tackles is second in team history behind Hall of Famer Patrick Willis's 950. His 53 pass defenses are tied for first among linebackers in team history, and his 15 forced fumbles rank second among 49ers LBs. He also has 10 interceptions and 10 sacks, making him just the second player after four-time Super Bowl champion Keena Turner, the current 49ers vice president and senior adviser to the general manager. Two of his interceptions have been returned for touchdowns.
Warner had his best statistical season in 2021, recording 137 total tackles, including 79 solo and a career high 7 tackles for loss. He has had at least 130 tackles in each of the previous four seasons, one of just three players to do so. Warner and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith are the only two LBs since 2000 with 115 or more tackles in each of their first seven seasons.
Warner is a four-time Pro Bowler and a four-time First-Team All-Pro; he won his first selections to each in 2020, and again in each of the past three seasons.
Warner is the third keystone player to get a long-term deal. The Niners signed quarterback
Purdy, Kittle, and Warner are all key pieces of a 49ers team that went to the NFC Championship Game in the 2022–2023 season and Super Bowl LVIII in the 2023–2024 season. But two record-setting contracts and a massive quarterback contract add to an expensive roster. The 49ers own three of the 30 largest
It also came with a cost, as several key players left in free agency. Cornerback Charvarius Ward signed with the Indianapolis Colts; defensive tackle Javon Hargrave signed with the Minnesota Vikings; Dre Greenlaw, who started alongside Warner for six seasons, and safety Talanoa Hufanga both signed with the Denver Broncos; and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd signed with the Atlanta Falcons, among other departures.

Longest championship droughts and playoff droughts in NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL

What is the longest championship drought ever? While there are great dynasties throughout sports history, plenty of NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB teams have gone decades without being on top of the world. Whether curses are to blame or just bad management and worse luck, fans put up with a lot. For many of these teams, these streaks of decades without a championship extend beyond one generation. Fans growing up as children hoping desperately to see their favorite club they were raised to support one day lift the banner declaring the champions. Time flies by and those same fans are capturing their children and even grandchildren in that same feeling. Advertisement Of course, some have it worse than others. While championship droughts are the focus, some fan bases have gone more than a decade without even seeing their team in the playoffs. It's one thing to never hoist the championship trophy and witness a parade, but not even experiencing the brief second of joy from a playoff game makes rooting for teams even more painful. Longest active playoff droughts in sports New York Jets (NFL) – 14 years Buffalo Sabres (NHL) – 13 years Los Angeles Angels (MLB) – 10 years Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB) – 9 years Charlotte Hornets (NBA) – 8 years Detroit Red Wings (NHL) – 8 years Here are the longest championship droughts and playoff droughts in the four major American professional sports. Longest championship drought in NFL Syndication: Arizona Republic The Arizona Cardinals have the longest championship drought in the NFL, with their last title coming in 1947 as the Chicago Cardinals. While the Cardinals appeared in Super Bowl XLIII in 2009, their lone Super Bowl appearance, this organization has never hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. Advertisement Some believe a curse is a reason for this title drought. Back in 1925, the Cardinals faced the Pottsville Maroons in the 1925 NFL Championship game. Pottsville won the game 21-7, a win that should have secured the championship. However, they were stripped of the title and the Maroons were suspended by the NFL for playing an exhibition game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The NFL then gave the title to the Cardinals. Of course, the Cardinals aren't the only franchise with a championship drought beyond 50 years. The Detroit Lions are one of seven teams without a Super Bowl win. The last time the Lions won a championship came in 1957, when they defeated the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Championship Game. Also Read:: NFL teams that have never won a Super Bowl Longest NFL playoff droughts right now New York Jets – 14 seasons Carolina Panthers – 7 seasons Atlanta Falcons – 6 seasons New Orleans Saints – 4 seasons Chicago Bears – 4 seasons Longest NFL playoff droughts of all time Cardinals – 25 seasons – (1949-1974) Commanders – 25 seasons – (1946-1971) Steelers – 24 seasons – (1948-1972) Saints – 20 seasons – (1967-1987) Browns – 17 seasons – (2003-2020) Advertisement The New York Jets signed Aaron Rodgers before the 2023 season, hoping he would end the longest playoff drought in the NFL. Instead, the Jets missed the playoffs in 2023 after he suffered an Achilles tear in Week 1. One year later, after firing their general manager and head coach, the Jets were eliminated from NFL playoff contention in 2024 following a Week 14 loss to the Miami Dolphins. In the 2027 NFL season, the jets can tie the Cleveland Browns for the fifth-longest NFL playoff drought ever. On Dec. 24, 2023, the Detroit Lions officially won the NFC North for the first time in franchise history. The Lions had a six-year playoff drought entering the 2023 season, with many believing the streak would end this year. Sure enough, a streak of 29 consecutive seasons without a division title has come to a close. Who has the longest NFL playoff drought? The New York Jets have the longest active playoff drought in the NFL, having missed the playoffs in 14 consecutive seasons. The Jets last playoff appearance came in the 2020 AFC Championship Game and the Jets last playoff win came in the 2010 AFC Divisional Round. Longest World Series drought in MLB MLB: World Series-Chicago Cubs at Cleveland Indians The Cleveland Guardians have the longest active championship drought in MLB, with their last World Series title coming in 1948. Cleveland reached the World Series multiple times (1954, '95, '97 and 2016). Ironically, the 2016 World Series loss to the Chicago Cubs snapped the longest championship drought ever, with the Cubs going 107 years without a title. The Mariners went 20 years without reaching the MLB playoffs, it was the longest active postseason drought in the top four American men's sports before they made the playoffs in 2022. In 2023, the Texas Rangers won their first World Series title in franchise history. The Rangers franchise first started playing in Texas at the start of the 1972 season, so the Texas franchise did not have one of the longest championship droughts in MLB. How many MLB teams have never won a World Series? Entering the 2025 season, five MLB teams have never won the World Series and the Seattle Mariners are the one franchise to never appear in a World Series. What MLB teams have never won a World Series? The San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies have never won the World Series. The Mariners last made the playoffs in 2001, an unforgettable season for the team. Seattle tied the record for the most wins in an MLB season (116), but lost in the American League Championship Series to the New York Yankees. Seattle then went 20 years without making it back to the postseason, but that streak is now over. When the Mariners hosted the Houston Astros in Game 3 of the American League Division Series in 2022, it was Seattle's first MLB playoff game since Oct. 18, 2001. In 2024, the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals snapped their postseason droughts. In each of the last three seasons, some of the longest MLB playoff droughts have been snapped. What is the longest MLB playoff drought? The Los Angeles Angels have the longest active playoff drought in MLB, having not made the playoffs in 10 years. The Angels last made the playoffs in 2015 and their last postseason series victory came in 2009. NBA teams with the longest championship droughts NBA: Phoenix Suns at Sacramento Kings The Sacramento Kings have the longest championship drought in the NBA and had one of the longest playoff droughts in American sports prior to last season. It's par for the course from a team that has battled to even reach mediocrity during its best seasons in the last two decades. Advertisement Basketball fans must go all the way back to the 1951 NBA to find the last Kings' championship. Keep in mind, that this happened when this franchise played in Rochester, New York as the Rochester Royals. The Royals beat the New York Knicks in seven games to win the 1951 NBA Finals. In 2025, the Detroit Pistons (five seasons) and Houston Rockets (four seasons) ended two of the longest NBA playoff droughts with both advance to the first round of the NBA playoffs. Longest Stanley Cup title drought in NHL NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Tampa Bay Lightning at Toronto Maple Leafs The Toronto Maple Leafs have the longest championship drought in the NHL, a massive fall for a dynasty. From 1917-'67, Toronto won the Stanley Cup finals 13 times, they still have the second-most Stanley Cup wins in NHL history. Advertisement Unfortunately, the wheels have fallen off in recent decades. The Maple Leafs have now gone 55 years without being crowned NHL champions. To make matters worse, this team isn't even coming close to the Stanley Cup finals. In fact, the last time Toronto hosted an Eastern Conference finals game came in 2002. At least the Maple Leafs aren't totally alone. The Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks are the other NHL teams to go 50-plus years without winning the Stanley Cup. Sadly for hockey fans in Philly, the Philadelphia Flyers aren't far behind. Jaguars star Travis Hunter marrying fiancee Leanna Lenee: What to know about wedding

The Jacksonville Jaguars made one of Travis Hunter's long-time dreams come true when they traded up to select him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Less than a month later, Hunter is celebrating another key life milestone. He is set to marry his fiancée, Leanna Lenee, on Saturday. Advertisement The ceremony is reportedly expected to take place in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Friends and family of the couple will be in attendance for the event, including Travis Hunter Sr., who was granted permission to attend his son's wedding after also being allowed to attend the 2025 NFL Draft. Of course, no wedding would be complete without wedding gifts. To that end, Hunter went the extra mile - no punt intended - for his new wife. Hunter surprised Lenee with a Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 BRABUS 800, which is valued anywhere between $400,000 and $650,000. Hunter Jr. and Lenee – whose full name is Leanna De La Fuente – began dating in 2022, several months after Hunter first reached out to Lenee on Instagram. Advertisement Initially, Lenee didn't respond to Hunter's message. "He just wasn't my type," Lenee said in a video the two posted to YouTube in October 2022. MEET LEANNA LENEE: Travis Hunter's fiancée getting married this weekend However, she eventually did send Hunter a message and the two established a friendship. They texted frequently over a two-month period, with both joking Hunter was in the "friend zone" during that time. Things changed after he accompanied Lenee to a friend's birthday party, to which she didn't want to go alone. "He went with me and then, we was in love," Lenee said. The two officially started dating on Feb. 26, 2022, as the two shared in social media posts celebrating their anniversary. The couple became engaged in 2024, as Lenee confirmed in a post to her Instagram. Advertisement "A million times, yes," the caption read. Jacksonville Jaguars OTAs observations: With no Travis Etienne, can running game survive?

The Jacksonville Jaguars were back on the field of the Miller Electric Center for the fourth organized team activity practice on Tuesday, May 27. The team has reached the halfway mark for voluntary offseason workouts and will wrap up with the final four practices before conducting mandatory minicamp from June 10-12. Advertisement Quarterback Trevor Lawrence had a much cleaner practice than his first media available performance this offseason. He only tossed one interception, with safety Andrew Wingard making a good play on the ball during 7-on-7 competition. Two-Way Travis: Jaguars' Liam Coen reveals Travis Hunter spent time on defense during OTA No. 3 Lawrence almost connected with rookie Travis Hunter on a pass near the sideline, but Hunter couldn't hold on to the ball. It would've been a big-time play, with Hunter contorting his body mid-air to attempt to catch the ball. If he did hold on to the ball, he might've injured himself as the team isn't in padded gear and it would've been an awkward fall. Advertisement However, the play of the day came from a nice throw from Lawrence to tight end Brenton Strange. Strange snagged a pass along the sideline over the outstretched arms of defensive back Jarrian Jones. It was a good catch, but he also made sure to get both feet inbounds prior to his momentum carrying him out of bounds. Let's look at a few notable observations from OTA No. 4 for the Jacksonville Jaguars: Travis Etienne was absent from Jacksonville Jaguars OTA No. 4 Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (16) throws the ball to running back Travis Etienne Jr. (1) during the first organized team activity at Miller Electric Center Monday, May 19, 2025 in Jacksonville, Fla. Running back Travis Etienne was not present at the practice. According to head coach Liam Coen, he had travel issues after the holiday weekend. Advertisement Etienne is entering the final year of his deal and the Jaguars drafted two running backs in April's NFL Draft. He could find himself traded prior to the season, but OTA 4 showed why that might be a risky proposition. The Jaguars are largely inexperienced in the room. Etienne is a lead back, recording more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons playing. The next closest player on the roster would be third-year back Tank Bigsby, who has been inconsistent. Then there's three backs who have little to no experience in the NFL. Jacksonville Jaguars running back LeQuint Allen (36), right, runs sprints during the fourth organized team activity at the Miller Electric Center in Jacksonville, Fla. Tuesday, May 27, 2025. [Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union] There's Keilan Robinson, who missed most of his rookie season due to injury. Then there's rookies Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen, who haven't stood out in the small window to view them. Advertisement Without Etienne, what's the confidence that the rushing attack can be a viable option to relieve Lawrence? Especially with how much Coen likes to run the football. Something to think about. Travis Hunter practices with the offense again, Liam Coen reveals he's already practiced with the defense Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Travis Hunter (12) catches a pass during the first organized team activity at Miller Electric Center Monday, May 19, 2025 in Jacksonville, Fla. Travis Hunter was back after his busy weekend, getting married on Saturday and going viral for surprising a young football player on Monday. Hunter was practicing as a member of the offense again, though, Coen revealed he did practice with the defense during OTA No. 3. As we said in our observations last week, there's a method behind Jacksonville's plan with Hunter. He's still a very raw player and needs as many reps on offense he can get. The time spent this summer learning offense will pay dividends for the team during the regular season. Advertisement OTA No. 4 wasn't notable for the rookie. However, we'll still keep an eye on him throughout the duration of offseason workouts and into training camp. Cam Camper makes impressive catch during 11-on-11 action Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Cam Camper (17) catches a pass during the first organized team activity at Miller Electric Center Monday, May 19, 2025 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Jaguars are finally in Phase III of the offseason, so they're able to do offense vs. defense drills. During OTA No. 1, the defense was noticeably ahead of Jacksonville's offense. It seems the offense made up some ground this week. We already mentioned the catch made by Strange, but it wasn't the only nice play made by Jacksonville's offense. During 11-on-11 drills, undrafted free agent wide receiver Cam Camper scored a touchdown. He blazed down the field and made a fingertip grab as Doneiko Slaughter and Rayuan Lane collided. With the two defenders wiped out, Camper trotted to the end zone. Coen referenced the catch after practice while discussing some of the younger receivers who are competing for roster spots. Advertisement He illustrated how difficult it is for young players to catch on post-draft as they are taking in so much information that most veteran players have had for more than a month prior to the draft. The wide receiver position, especially, will be one to monitor as guys compete for spots behind Jacksonville's top players.
