Johannesburg Water explains Halfway House trench delays

The Citizen4 days ago
Johannesburg Water (JW) spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said they are aware of the Halfway House trench on the corner of Richards Drive and Suttie Avenue.
This comes after the article, No clear reason for Halfway House trench, [week ending July 4], reported that the trench was an eyesore after JW allegedly left it opened.
Midrand Reporter first took note of the trench in late April/early May, and attempted to get comment from a company next to it. Unfortunately, this proved fruitless.

We noted the trench was still there recently, and contacted JW's communications team on July 1 regarding whether the leak had been repaired, and the delays over the trench's backfill and reinstatement.
In their response, on July 10, Shabalala said JW is aware of the trench, which is barricaded, as the depot team was awaiting fittings manufacturing to complete the works.
When asked when they will fix it and close the trench, she said: 'The leak was resolved by JW this past weekend, on July 5. JW initially completed the repairs using a clamp. However, the leak reoccurred, and the team opted to manufacture the bend/fitting as a permanent replacement.'

Little hands and big hearts at Nurture and Nature Montessori Sandton

The grounds of Nurture and Nature Montessori Sandton came alive with the cheerful sounds of play, music, and heartfelt connection, as they celebrated Mandela Day with special guests from Growing Seeds Preschool in Berea on July 18. The day was not designed just to mark a moment on the calendar, but to embody the spirit of ubuntu, the belief in a shared humanity that Mandela so passionately championed. Read more: Runners sweat out their hearts at the Mandela Day Walk & Run 2025 For many of the visiting children, it was their first time stepping into a structured early learning environment, and the warm welcome they received set the tone for a day filled with joyful discovery. Children painted together, sang songs, listened to animated storytelling, and built new friendships, all under the watchful care of passionate educators who understand that true learning begins with love and acceptance. What unfolded was more than just a fun day; it was a living tribute to Nelson Mandela's vision of a world where dignity and kindness are extended to all, especially the youngest among us. Nurture and Nature's marketing and admissions officer Stephanie Mundell said: 'Seeing our children engaging so naturally and compassionately with the children from Growing Seeds Preschool was incredibly moving. 'It reminded us that the values of empathy, generosity, and inclusion can be nurtured from a very young age, and that this generation has the potential to build the world Mandela dreamed of.' The event wasn't just an act of outreach; it was a celebration of equality, opportunity, and the unbreakable bond between childhood and hope. Mondell added: 'As Mandela said: 'There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children'. 'At Nurture and Nature, we strive to honour that sentiment, not only on Mandela Day, but every day, by cultivating environments where every child feels seen, safe, and inspired. 'Let this day serve as a gentle, but powerful, reminder that Mandela Day is more than a date. It is a way of life, a call to serve, to uplift, and to believe in the transformational power of love, especially when placed in the smallest hands.' Missing for 2 months: Stellenbosch student's pet python found in car sold to dealership

When BCom student Roelof Naudé (21) lost his pet snake at his private residence in Stellenbosch two months ago, he was really sad. 'I've shed a tear and looked for him forever,' said the Georgian, who is currently visiting his parents during the school holidays. 'Draco is a ball python, and I've had him since he was a baby.' Helping out at his dad's business, Naudé received a call on July 18 from the car dealership in George to which he sold his vehicle a week ago, George Herald reports. 'They asked me if I'd lost a snake. I was so happy to hear they found him. I couldn't believe it,' says Naudé, who immediately asked for a break during his shift at SPAR Wellington Square and went to fetch his pet. Apparently, a customer had browsed among the cars at the dealership and spotted the snake on a seat. 'It was so unreal,' says Naudé, 'but it all makes sense. I lost him in the beginning of winter. Snakes like to be warm; I think he stayed hidden in the car because of the heat.' Naudé has had Draco for three years, and received him as a gift from his tattoo artist in Stellenbosch. Draco is currently about 75cm and weighs 1.5kg. A ball python can tip the scale at 5kg and live up to 30 years. 'Draco is completely harmless and used to being handled. He was absolutely starving and very thirsty. I raced home and gave him a bowl of water, and defrosted a rat. Snakes can go months without eating. The rat will last him weeks.' Naudé says Draco is very comfortable and likes to be around people. 'In the beginning, my girlfriend had to get used to his presence, but now she's happy to hold him.' Naudé is full of praise for the car dealership and one of its employees, whom he says handled the situation like a professional.
