Dr Sim: Sarawak to continue upholding religious freedom, supporting all faiths

KUCHING (June 15): Sarawak will continue to uphold religious freedom through rendering support to the development of various religions in the state, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian
The Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government noted that Sarawak has remained financially strong and politically stable due to the state government's commitment to inclusivity and religious tolerance.
'The Sarawak government will not stop its support for all religious organisations in carrying out their charitable and educational activities,' he said at the launch of the Kuching Buddhist Fellowship's charity fair today.
Dr Sim highlighted that the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), inaugurated by former chief minister the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, has been granting funds to various non-Muslim religious bodies over the years.
He said Unifor annual allocation, amounting to RM100 million, has helped many Buddhist and Christian organisations in improving their infrastructure and community services.
Citing the charity fair as an example, he said such programme should serve as a platform for religious leaders to instil positive values and characteristics in young devotees.
According to Dr Sim, it is crucial for participants, especially youth, to learn about the importance of showing compassion to others rather than being preoccupied with electronic gadgets.
To contribute to the state's development, he said religious organisations must play a role in educating children from a young age, guiding them onto the right path.
'It does not matter how much you have donated to charities because every little effort counts. It is the spirit of contribution that we want to promote among the community.'
Dr Sim was delighted to note that Buddhist organisations have been promoting compassion, positivity and equality, all of which are commendable qualities that are in tandem with the principles of nation-building.
He hoped that all Sarawakians will keep up their efforts of safeguarding the state toward ensuring that all continue to enjoy stability and prosperity. Dr Sim Kui Hian lead religious freedom religious organisations support

Salleh: Power must be shared, not controlled in Sabah politics
Salleh KOTA KINABALU (June 15): Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has issued a strong reminder to political coalitions in the state: power must be shared fairly, not dominated by a single party. In a statement that underscores the importance of equality and mutual respect among coalition partners, Salleh said no party should act like it is the 'boss' of a coalition. 'In today's politics, no party should act like it's the boss of a coalition. Every party brings its own strength and deserves to be treated as an equal partner,' the Usukan assemblyman said on his Facebook page on Sunday. The Umno Sabah treasurer stressed that successful coalitions are built on shared leadership, collective responsibility, and fair representation not unilateral control. 'A good coalition is built on shared leadership and fair power-sharing — not control by one dominant party. All decisions, responsibilities and representation must be discussed and agreed together,' Salleh said. According to him, what matters most is having a common agenda that all partners support, particularly when it comes to development, good governance and defending Sabah's rights. While he acknowledged the importance of fairly representing Sabah's major communities, Bumiputera Muslim, non-Muslim Bumiputera, and non-Bumiputera, Salleh said that representation alone is not enough without real power-sharing among parties. 'Fair representation of Sabah's main communities is important, but that alone is not enough. Power must also be shared fairly among all coalition partners. Every party must have a real role and a fair say in shaping decisions,' he added. Salleh pointed out that Sabah's political strength lies in its diversity, and a stable coalition must reflect this reality. 'A strong coalition must reflect Sabah's diversity. Every group deserves a voice and a place at the table,' he said. He also emphasised that true stability comes from trust, fairness and inclusion. 'Stability comes from trust and fairness. When everyone feels respected and involved, the coalition becomes stronger and more united,' Salleh said. Calling for a shift in political mindset, he urged parties in Sabah to move away from outdated models of control and towards genuine teamwork. 'It's time to move beyond old ways of thinking. Sabah needs a coalition that works as a team, not one party calling all the shots while others are expected to just follow,' he said.

Uggah: More STEM education initiatives for Bukit Saban students

KUCHING (June 15): More initiatives will be introduced to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among students in the Bukit Saban constituency, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. Uggah, who is also the Bukit Saban assemblyman, said the emphasis on STEM is timely given the growing demand for technical and professional talent, particularly in engineering, technology, and accounting. 'With Sarawak advancing into new economic sectors like the hydrogen economy, the aerospace industry, new airport development, and the Sarawak Gas Roadmap programme, we will certainly require more skilled manpower in these areas. 'Potential investors looking at Sarawak will also assess our ability to provide the necessary talent pool,' he added during a presentation ceremony of his annual study incentives to 12 undergraduates and six diploma students from his constituency here today in which a similar presentation will be held in Spaoh tomorrow. According to Uggah, these developments are expected to generate numerous job opportunities for Sarawakians. As such, priority under the state's free tertiary education initiative, particularly at local institutions, will be given to students pursuing studies in STEM-related fields.
