KUCHING (June 15): More initiatives will be introduced to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among students in the Bukit Saban constituency, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Uggah, who is also the Bukit Saban assemblyman, said the emphasis on STEM is timely given the growing demand for technical and professional talent, particularly in engineering, technology, and accounting.
'With Sarawak advancing into new economic sectors like the hydrogen economy, the aerospace industry, new airport development, and the Sarawak Gas Roadmap programme, we will certainly require more skilled manpower in these areas.
'Potential investors looking at Sarawak will also assess our ability to provide the necessary talent pool,' he added during a presentation ceremony of his annual study incentives to 12 undergraduates and six diploma students from his constituency here today in which a similar presentation will be held in Spaoh tomorrow.
According to Uggah, these developments are expected to generate numerous job opportunities for Sarawakians.
As such, priority under the state's free tertiary education initiative, particularly at local institutions, will be given to students pursuing studies in STEM-related fields.
He also encouraged students to continue striving for higher academic achievements.
'We already have a number of PhD holders from here. If they can do it despite facing various challenges, I am confident many others can follow in their footsteps,' he said.
He added that quality education opens doors to better career prospects and an improved quality of life.
Meanwhile, touching on the planned Yayasan Sarawak International School for the Betong Division, Uggah expressed appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving the project.
He said the school would feature a curriculum distinct from that of regular schools, with a strong emphasis on mathematics and science aligning closely with the state's push for STEM education.
'I hope our students will prepare themselves and develop a strong passion for these two subjects in order to qualify for admission,' he said.
Also present at the event were Sarawak Premier's political secretary Roseline Mapong, as well as Uggah's children, Dr Louis and Dr Annabelle. Bukit Saban douglas uggah embas lead STEM education students

'The Sarawak government will not stop its support for all religious organisations in carrying out their charitable and educational activities,' he said at the launch of the Kuching Buddhist Fellowship's charity fair today. Dr Sim highlighted that the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), inaugurated by former chief minister the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, has been granting funds to various non-Muslim religious bodies over the years. He said Unifor annual allocation, amounting to RM100 million, has helped many Buddhist and Christian organisations in improving their infrastructure and community services. Citing the charity fair as an example, he said such programme should serve as a platform for religious leaders to instil positive values and characteristics in young devotees. According to Dr Sim, it is crucial for participants, especially youth, to learn about the importance of showing compassion to others rather than being preoccupied with electronic gadgets. To contribute to the state's development, he said religious organisations must play a role in educating children from a young age, guiding them onto the right path. 'It does not matter how much you have donated to charities because every little effort counts. It is the spirit of contribution that we want to promote among the community.' Dr Sim was delighted to note that Buddhist organisations have been promoting compassion, positivity and equality, all of which are commendable qualities that are in tandem with the principles of nation-building. He hoped that all Sarawakians will keep up their efforts of safeguarding the state toward ensuring that all continue to enjoy stability and prosperity. RM90 mln MARA college project in Kapit begins after long wait
Nanta (fifth left) witnesses the handover of award letter between Roslan (fourth left) and Hajini. KAPIT (June 14): A long-awaited higher education project in Kapit is finally underway as the government recently handed over the letter of award for the Kolej Profesional MARA (KPM) to its appointed contractor, in the presence of Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Kapit MP was joined by Public Works Malaysia (PWD) Director-General Datuk Wira Ir Roslan Ismail, where the latter presented the award letter to Wangi Marine Services Sdn Bhd director Hajini Pon. 'We have waited a long time for this. This is what we truly needed – a high-impact project to benefit students from rural areas,' Nanta told a press conference today. The KPM Kapit facility, approved in 2019, will offer diploma-level education with courses such as business studies, e-commerce, plantation management, information technology, and other soft-skill disciplines, he said. The college is expected to accommodate up to 300 students per intake. While a minimum fee is required for first-time enrollees, he said tuition will be free and each student will receive a monthly allowance of RM300. 'Parents need not apply for education loans – all costs will be fully borne by the government,' he assured. Elaborating further, the minister said the project is estimated to cost approximately RM90 million, with the contractor securing the open tender for RM79.7 million. The remaining allocation will be used for additional infrastructure and related purposes. The scope of works includes earthworks, construction of 19 administrative and academic blocks, a cafeteria, student hostels, and a football field. Nanta expressed his gratitude to Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) for their roles in ensuring the project's implementation in Kapit. 'KPM will not only serve the people of Kapit but will be open to all Sarawakians,' he said. Nanta also urged the contractor to carry out the project with strict adherence to quality standards and a commitment to timely completion, despite the area's challenging terrain, particularly near Jalan Kapit–Song. Also present were MARA deputy director-general Rohayah Mohd Zain; PWD Malaysia deputy director-general Siti Baizura Mohd Nora; deputy minister in the Premier's Department (Native Customs and Laws) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat; Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan, and Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang. alexander nanta linggi Kapit Kolej Profesional MARA
