India-US trade talks to take place in Washington
Rajesh Agrawal, India's chief negotiator and Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, is set to join the Indian commerce ministry team in Washington, DC today. This visit is part of a crucial round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) between India and the United States.

The Indian team has already commenced talks in Washington on Monday (July 14) and the discussions are scheduled to continue for four days, concluding on Thursday (July 17). Agrawal's arrival signifies the heightened importance and intensity of these ongoing negotiations.
The visit assumes significance as both sides have to iron out issues in sectors like agriculture and automobiles. It is also important as the US has further postponed the imposition of additional tariffs on several countries, including India, until August 1.
Hearing on the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
An important hearing on the case relating to the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia will take place in Tennessee's Nashville today. This hearing will address a request by federal prosecutors to revoke a previous order that granted him pretrial release, allowing him to remain in custody while he awaits trial on human smuggling charges.
Abrego Garcia's case has garnered significant national attention. He was in March 2025 by the Trump administration, despite a 2019 US immigration judge's order shielding him from deportation due to fears of gang violence. After intense pressure, including a Supreme Court order, he was returned to the US last month to face the smuggling charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop.

Inauguration of Suriname's first woman president
Jennifer Geerlings-Simons is set to make history with her inauguration as Suriname's first woman president today in the capital city of Paramaribo. Geerlings-Simons' National Democratic Party (NDP) won 18 of the 51 seats in the National Assembly.
A physician and veteran politician, Geerlings-Simons led the National Democratic Party (NDP) to a narrow victory in the May 2025 general election. Following the inconclusive results, she successfully hammered out a coalition agreement with five other parties, securing the necessary two-thirds supermajority (34 out of 51 seats) in parliament to ensure her election unopposed. Her vice president will be Gregory Rusland, leader of the National Party of Suriname (NPS).
Foreign ministers meet of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine
The foreign ministers of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine are set to meet in Lublin, Poland, today, marking the fifth anniversary of the 'Lublin Triangle,' a trilateral regional cooperation platform established in July 2020.
The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the meeting, stating that the foreign ministers Radoslaw Sikorski of Poland, Kestutis Budrys of Lithuania and Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha will participate in the meeting. Sybiha will be standing in for Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who has been attending other engagements.
The agenda for the meeting will focus on strengthening political, economic, cultural, and social ties between the three nations, with a particular emphasis on coordinating efforts to counter Russian aggression and support Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations.

Inauguration of the Mont-Blanc tunnel's 60th anniversary
The iconic Mont-Blanc Tunnel will mark its 60th anniversary, commemorating six decades since its official inauguration in 1965. The tunnel stretches 7.2 miles (11.6 kilometres) through the Alps and at the time of its inauguration was a marvellous genius that connected Chamonix in France with Courmayeur in Italy. The tunnel drastically shortened travel times between the two nations.

Construction on the tunnel began in 1957, taking eight arduous years to complete under incredibly challenging conditions. Workers faced extreme cold, high altitudes, and the dangers of drilling through solid granite, often encountering unpredictable geological formations and water intrusions. The project symbolized European cooperation and ambition, as it was a joint venture between France and Italy.
Mamata Banerjee to lead protest in Kolkata against targeting of migrants
Responding to what the Trinamool Congress calls 'continued targeting' of migrants from West Bengal in BJP-governed states, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a protest rally in Kolkata today. The rally is scheduled to begin at 1 pm from College Square and culminate at Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata. It is a strong assertion of ' Bengali pride" by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The protest comes amidst a series of incidents where Bengali-speaking individuals have reportedly faced discrimination, detention and even deportation attempts, with allegations of being labelled as 'Bangladeshis.'

Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns after nearly 3 years: A look back at his explosive face-offs with Mamata Banerjee as Bengal Governor

Before stepping down as Vice President citing health reasons, Jagdeep Dhankhar made headlines during his three-year stint as West Bengal Governor largely due to a highly publicised and persistent feud with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. While Dhankhar urged political harmony shortly before his resignation, his earlier tenure was marked by one of the most visible Governor-Chief Minister confrontations in recent Indian politics. Social media clashes and a blocked handle Tensions between Dhankhar and Banerjee escalated publicly when the Chief Minister blocked the Governor on Twitter. Dhankhar responded with a series of tweets criticising the state government's conduct. The editorial in the TMC's mouthpiece Jago Bangla, titled 'Ter Paben' (He Will Face the Consequence), reflected that the standoff was far from over. Dhankhar had actively used his official Twitter handle since assuming office in July 2019 to comment on various state matters, especially targeting the ruling TMC government. Letters, accusations, and constitutional sparring The strained relationship reached a critical point in November 2019 when both leaders exchanged official letters. Mamata Banerjee accused the Governor of provoking unrest and overstepping constitutional boundaries. Dhankhar countered, stating he had faced 'indignities' and verbal attacks from ministers. Banerjee urged the Governor to help maintain peace instead of 'aggravating' the situation through press briefings and tweets. The correspondence highlighted the power tussle between Raj Bhavan and Nabanna. Administrative deadlocks and the call for removal Banerjee had long called for Dhankhar's removal, citing difficulties caused by him in routine administrative functions—be it delayed file clearances or repeated summoning of top bureaucrats. The Chief Minister alleged that these actions were aimed at undermining her authority. Despite these tensions, Dhankhar was elevated to the Vice President's office in 2022, ending his truncated three-year governorship that typically spans five years. Political interpretation and the central government's role TMC saw Dhankhar's transfer to Delhi as a partial victory, although some leaders felt retaining him till the next assembly elections could have been politically useful to showcase BJP's alleged constitutional overreach. The central government, particularly Home Minister Amit Shah, reportedly informed Banerjee about Dhankhar's nomination without prior consultation—a move that the TMC criticised for bypassing established democratic protocols. A new political chapter, but lingering questions Hon'ble Vice-President & Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar paid tributes in the House today to former Members of Rajya Sabha:Shri C. PerumalDr. K. KasturiranganShri Ronald Sapa TlauShri Nepaldev BhattacharjeeSardar Sukhdev Singh DhindsaShri Thennala G.… While Dhankhar has since engaged with opposition forces as Vice President, the unresolved friction with the Bengal government remains a case study in Centre-state relations. TMC's decision on whether to support his nomination reportedly hinged on Mamata Banerjee's strategy following her annual July 21 Shaheed Divas rally. Ultimately, Dhankhar's nomination sailed through without a strong opposition challenge. Jagdeep Dhankhar's years in West Bengal redefined the visibility and voice of a Governor in India's political structure moving from a ceremonial role to an outspoken participant in governance. His feud with Mamata Banerjee was not just personal or political—it became emblematic of deeper federal tensions.

Technical textiles is a potential area for investments in T.N. by Taiwan companies: official

Technical textiles is a potential sector that can see significant investments in Tamil Nadu by Taiwan companies, said V. Arun Roy, Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, Tamil Nadu. Speaking at the Tamil Nadu – Taiwan Technical Textiles Partnership Summit, organised in Coimbatore on Monday by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Tiruppur Exporters Association, and the Tamil Nadu government, he said Tamil Nadu has a large investment from Taiwan companies in electronics and footwear sectors. Since 2021, the Tamil Nadu government and Taiwan companies have signed 21 MoUs for $ 1.4 billion investment in the State. Technical textiles can be the next potential sector. The PM MITRA Park at Virudhunagar will have dedicated area for technical textiles apart from plug and play facilities for technical textiles. Indian and Taiwan companies should look at investing in the park. Garment exports from Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts grew 20% in 2024-2025 to touch ₹45,000 crores and registered 12 % growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The exports are expected to increase 15% this year. However, 'future of the textile industry lies beyond the cotton sector. We should tap opportunities in technical textiles and MMF. It offers more opportunities in value addition,' he said. Director of Handlooms, Tamil Nadu, Maheshwari Ravikumar said the Tamil Nadu government was in the process of issuing an order to offer capital subsidy for the processing sector; will introduce courses in technical textiles in polytechnics and industrial training institutes, and was studying the recommendations submitted in a report by Wazir Advisors to promote sportswear and athleisure production in the State. Over 55 one-to-one business meetings were held in Coimbatore on Monday between Indian companies and Taiwan companies as a part of the Summit.
