‘Rabil's Places' Review: Helmets and History Lessons on ESPN+
Once upon a time, a prime piece of sports-bar trivia concerned Jim Brown, legendary Cleveland Browns running back and NFL hall of famer. What game brought him to Syracuse University? Lacrosse. Next question: What's lacrosse? No one would ask that now, when you can barely drive through a suburb without passing kids in helmets swinging sticks while crawling, clamping, clearing and cross-checking. Still, Paul Rabil, longtime pro player, co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League and the host of 'Rabil's Places,' seems to feel a need to sell one of the most popular youth sports in the country and one that action-thirsty young players use to con their parents: You think tackle football leads to concussions, sprains and torn ACLs? Hold my Gatorade.

St. Thomas Aquinas' Crowley and Stein are the Broward Lacrosse Coaches of the Year
At St. Thomas Aquinas this year, a familiar face led the boys' lacrosse team to yet another state championship and a new face helped the girls' lacrosse team stay among the top teams in Broward County. Now, Terry Crowley and Kristina Stein the Miami Herald's Broward County Lacrosse Coaches of the Year. Crowley is the Herald's Boys' Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season after hoisting his fourth state championship trophy with the Raiders. Crowley also led St. Thomas Aquinas to state titles in 2016, 2017 and 2022, and he also took the Raiders to the title game in 2015, 2019 and 2023. In 2024, St. Thomas Aquinas went into the region playoffs with a losing record before making a run to the final four and that experience primed the Raiders for a return to championship form in 2025. St. Thomas Aquinas brought another trophy back to Fort Lauderdale by blowing out Ponte Vedra, 13-4, in the Class 2A title game May 10. Along the way, the Raiders lost only one game to another Florida team—an overtime loss to Benjamin in April. Stein is the Herald's Broward County Girls' Lacrosse Coach of the Year after sustaining the Raiders' status as one of the top teams in the county in her first year as coach. St. Thomas Aquinas reached the Region 4-2A championship, making a deeper run in the postseason than any other Broward team, and went undefeated against county rivals. In the region playoffs, the Raiders won their first three games each by at least nine goals, only to narrowly fall 7-6 to Vero Beach in the 4-2A championship May 2. Stein, who spent the last two seasons as the coach at Stoneman Douglas, was previously an assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas and is off to a good start in building on the Raiders' legacy of recent success that includes a state title in 2021 and a trip to the state championship in 2023.

Penfield and HF-L punch tickets to Sectional Finals
Class A: (3)Penfield 10, (2)Fairport 7 Griffin Banister scored four times pacing Penfield to a semifinal win at Spencerport high school Friday night. The Patriots led this game start to finish. Jake Maurer added a hat trick for Penfield and Mason Schembri made 10 saves—many of which were spectacular. The Patriots jumped out to a 3-1 lead early. Robert Protz scored one of his three Fairport goals in the final three minutes of the half to close the Red Raiders within 4-3 after 24 minutes. Banninster and Maurer each scored goals in the first 68 seconds of the second half for the Patriots who eventually built an 8-4 lead. Protz answered again for Fairport and then the Raiders got a break when Penfield accidentally put a rebound into their own net with 1.8 seconds left in the quarter. The Penfield lead was down to 8-6. Schembri and the defense shut the door from there. The Raiders scored only once and were never again closer than two goals. Penfield opened the season with a five-game losing streak, but the Patriots are now 11-7. They will meet top-seeded McQuaid for the Class A title Tuesday evening at Hobart College with faceoff scheduled for 5pm. Fairport finished their season at 8-8. Class C: (2) Honeoye Falls-Lima Central 14, (3) Geneva 5 Only down by three, Geneva still had life at the start of the second half. That was until HF-L's Quinn Kailbourne opened the game up, scoring four of his six goals in the second half, leading all scorers on the night. Cash Arena for the Cougars added four goals of his own, including two in a 19-second span to end the second half. Grady Goodberlet had two of his own, followed by Jackson Coon and Marco Vengoechea with one each. Goodberlet and Coon were the key distributors of the game, with three assists each. In goal, Jason Bennett ended the night with 11 saves, only allowing one goal in the second half. On the opposite side, Ryland Dunham led the way for Geneva, with three goals, all coming in the first half. Ben Budgar added one goal and one assist for the Panthers. Jack Dunham and Dominick Verdora found their way into the box score as well. Durham assisted Budgar's first goal of the night, while Verdora scored Geneva's lone goal of the second half. HF-L will take on top-seeded Palmyra-Macedon, who come off a huge 21-10 victory over Wayne. The Class C title game is set for next Friday at Hobart College, with faceoff scheduled for 5pm. Geneva finished their season 13-5. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
