
China's BYD Takes the Lead Over Tesla in the Self-Driving Car Wars
The Chinese EV giant just made an unprecedented move: it's offering a public, financial guarantee for its autonomous parking system. If the system malfunctions, even due to an algorithmic failure, BYD will cover all resulting damages, including repair costs, third-party property damage, and compensation for personal injury.
'We are first in the world to propose a guarantee for autonomous parking,' the company said in a statement posted on social media Weibo. 'Our move reflects absolute confidence in God's Eye ADAS.'
It's a bold promise that could set a new global benchmark for how automakers take—or avoid—responsibility for their autonomous technology.
While Tesla Warns, BYD Backs It Up
The announcement draws a sharp contrast with Tesla, whose Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is still marketed as a beta feature. Despite its name, FSD requires full driver supervision, and Tesla repeatedly reminds users that they, not the company, are legally responsible for anything that happens on the road.
BYD's stance flips that logic on its head. It's not just promising a smarter system; it's promising corporate accountability, a component that has been largely missing from the discussion around consumer-grade autonomy.
This guarantee is being delivered via a simple over-the-air (OTA) software update, not as part of a flashy concept car. With the upcoming God's Eye B update, BYD will enhance scene recognition, active safety, and precision parking in all conditions, including new functions like three-speed parking, U-turn assistance, and bypass maneuvers.
The First Real Liability Shift?
BYD wants to establish legal and financial trust. For years, regulators and safety advocates have warned that carmakers were deploying autonomous features too quickly without clearly defining who is to blame when something goes wrong. BYD's pledge may be the first real-world test of shifting liability from the user back to the manufacturer.

CFO Vaibhav Taneja said on the call that the OBBB recently would affect Tesla's business, leading to a "pull forward" in sales ahead of the $7,500 tax credit expiring at the end of Q3. 'Given the abrupt change, we have limited supply of vehicles in the US this quarter,' Taneja said. 'We may not be able to guarantee delivery orders placed in the later part of August and beyond.' Taneja also said Tesla would ramp up volume production of an upcoming "affordable" model once the EV tax credit expired. There have been no indications or even renderings of a new vehicle, let alone production of a vehicle priced around $30,000. Tesla's cheapest EV is the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 sedan, which starts at around $43,000 without incentives. "We continue to expand our vehicle offering, including first builds of a more affordable model in June, with volume production planned for the second half of 2025," the company said in a statement. Tesla also said its purpose-built robotaxi was still scheduled for volume production starting in 2026. Tesla has expanded its robotaxi testing in Austin, Texas, with a bigger operating area and likely more vehicles coming. Musk said the company would expand testing to the San Francisco Bay Area, but reports suggest the applications for those state permits have not been submitted. Separately, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that Tesla was in talks with Nevada officials to test the company's robotaxi service. Nvidia AI chips worth $1 billion entered China despite US curbs, FT reports
(Reuters) -Nvidia's advanced artificial intelligence chips worth at least $1 billion were smuggled to China in the three months after Washington tightened chip export controls, the Financial Times reported on Thursday. The AI chip designer's high-end B200 processors, banned for sale in China, is widely available on a thriving Chinese black market for U.S. chips, the report said, citing sales contracts, company filings and multiple people with direct knowledge of the deals. Nvidia told Reuters that building data centers with smuggled products is inefficient both technically and financially, as the company only offers service and support for authorized products. The U.S. Department of Commerce, White House and Thai government did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters could not independently verify the FT report. In May, multiple Chinese distributors started selling B200s to suppliers of data centers that serve Chinese AI groups, according to the report. The U.S. and China are battling for global dominance in AI and other cutting-edge technologies, triggering a tightrope walk for companies such as Nvidia between the world's two largest economies. Nvidia last week said it would be allowed to resume sales to China after the Trump administration reversed an export restriction on the sales of chips such as H20. The curbs were imposed in April. In the three months before that, Chinese distributors from Guangdong, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces sold Nvidia's B200s, as well as other restricted processors such as the H100 and H200, according to the report. Southeast Asian countries have become markets where Chinese groups obtained restricted chips, the report said, citing industry experts. The U.S. Commerce Department is discussing adding more export controls on advanced AI products to countries such as Thailand as soon as September, the report said.
