Thursday's briefing: PSG beat Spurs on penalties as Rashford hits out at Man Utd

Barcelona loanee Marcus Rashford criticised the progress of parent club Manchester United, while the Premier League's chief executive dismissed the prospect of taking a top-flight fixture abroad.
United were later drawn to face League Two Grimsby in the pick of the Carabao Cup second-round ties.
Tottenham endured penalty shoot-out pain in Thomas Frank's first match in charge as Paris St Germain overturned a two-goal deficit to claim the UEFA Super Cup.
Set-piece goals from defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero put Spurs on course for another trophy – only three months since Frank's predecessor Ange Postecoglou clinched Europa League glory in May.
But Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute before PSG substitute Goncalo Ramos headed home in the fourth minute of added time to secure a 2-2 draw and force spot-kicks.
Tottenham were handed the initiative when Vitinha missed the Champions League holders' first penalty, only for Van de Ven and Mathys Tel to fail from 12 yards as PSG triumphed 4-3 in the shoot-out to claim the silverware.

Marcus Rashford described Manchester United as being in 'no man's land' as he claimed the transition under manager Ruben Amorim 'has not started yet'.
England forward Rashford last month left his boyhood club for a season-long loan at Barcelona, having finished the 2024-25 campaign with Aston Villa after falling out of favour following Amorim's arrival.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the 27-year-old said: 'People say that we've been in a transition for years but to be in a transition you have to start a transition. The actual transition has not started yet.
'We've had that many different managers, different ideas and different strategies to win that you end up in no man's land.'
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said there are no plans to play a top-flight match abroad.
Italy's Serie A and Spain's LaLiga have unveiled plans to stage league fixtures in Australia and the United States respectively as those competitions seek greater worldwide exposure.
Masters believes the Premier League has gone global by other means since the idea of a 39th match round abroad was first floated in 2008.
'There are billions of people who will be tuning in over the course of the next the next nine months to watch Premier League action, so we've achieved that objective by different means, that necessity has dissipated,' he said.

Fourth-tier Grimsby were paired with Manchester United in one of the standout clashes of the Carabao Cup second round.
Blundell Park is set to host the six-time winners, who were the last team out of the hat in Wednesday evening's draw, during the week beginning August 25.
United have not lined up against the Lincolnshire club since the 1947-48 season, when they lost 4-3 at home before drawing 1-1 away in the the old First Division.
Promoted Leeds face a trip to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Everton will host League One Mansfield, while there are all-Premier League ties between Bournemouth and Brentford and Wolves and West Ham.
Hibernian take a 2-0 aggregate lead into the home leg of their Conference League third qualifying round tie with Partizan Belgrade, while Dundee United and Rapid Vienna are level at 2-2 ahead of the meeting at Tannadice.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot and Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola will hold press conferences to preview Friday's Premier League opener at Anfield.

Ederson remains first-choice goalkeeper at Man City

City have themselves been strongly linked with Paris St Germain's unwanted goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, having already spent £27million to bring James Trafford back from Burnley. Ederson is reportedly keen on a move to join Galatasaray (Mike Egerton/PA) But asked who was in line to start in goal in Saturday's Premier League opener away to Wolves, Guardiola said it would be Ederson. 'Right now, Eddy (is number one),' he said. 'He's fit, yeah.' This summer has seen City bring in Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Trafford, as well as reserve goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and youngster Sveree Nypan. But last season Guardiola had said he would 'quit' if he had too many players on the books and there is still plenty of work to be done moving players on. Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Scott Carson have left from the old guard, while Jack Grealish has gone on loan to Everton and January signing Vitor Reis has been loaned to sister club Girona. The new season starts here. 2025/26 🔜 — Premier League (@premierleague) June 18, 2025 'Pre-season is a dream,' Guardiola said. 'We have 40 players, it's not a problem. Pre-season is a paradise, 45 players is fine, everyone accepts it. 'From tomorrow, I have players who are not selected – it's not a problem because they are professionals, but it's not nice. 'You have to (have enough) that everybody competes to have the chance they can play on Saturday, that is when you get the best of them. 'When you have a lot of players, every week is (leave them) at home, it makes no sense. You have to find the right way.' James McAtee is expected to join Nottingham Forest and Tottenham have held talks over Savinho. PEP 💬 [Mateo] Kovacic is not ready, Josko [Gvardiol] is not ready… Savinho is injured. The others are [ready]. — Manchester City (@ManCity) August 15, 2025 Kalvin Phillips has no future at the club and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega is also expected to leave, given the competition for places. 'If they stay it's fine, but they know it,' Guardiola said 'The reality is that so they know it. 'If they stay, for me it's fine. It's not ideal but it's my job, I do it. But if they want to play regularly, maybe it's not going to happen.'

Emotional Arne Slot dedicates Liverpool's opening day win to Diogo Jota after Mohamed Salah is reduced to tears in first Premier League game since forward's death

Liverpool boss Arne Slot dedicated their opening day win to the late Diogo Jota, who was honoured at Anfield on Friday night with several moving tributes. Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Mo Salah scored for the champions in a 4-2 win over Bournemouth. Egyptian talisman Salah was reduced to tears at full-time and Slot said: 'I didn't want to go inside after the game. 'Because it was so special how our fans kept on singing for Diogo. Every time you think you cannot expect more from Liverpool fans, they top it and over perform. It was special to hear how much he is loved. 'I think Mo felt how special that was. He probably felt the emotions. Diogo's wife is here, his family is here, his children are here. We also feel the emotions, the grief they still have. Those emotions probably led to Mo being emotional. I felt the same without being in tears.' Slot also praised substitute Chiesa who experienced a horror first year on Merseyside after a £10million move last summer, missing most of last season through injury and poor form. But he started this term on fire, coming off the bench to make it 3-2, and Slot said: 'After the fans sung so many times for him, it's nice he gave them something in return. That's what he did today. Unbelievable atmosphere in the last few minutes. 'The last six or seven minutes. Wow, how impressive that was. Great game. As long as he's here, he's definitely at Liverpool. I have no reason to think that will change. He had a tough time last season with his match fitness. 'But Federico, when we needed him, I brought him in. At 2-2, you need a No 9 and he delivered.' Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said: 'I am really pleased with the performance. Today we have missed a big chance to take something from the game. We played really well. The momentum was on our side at 2-2. 'It is a shame because we are so proud of the things we have done. The easiest thing was to give up at 2-0 but it didn't happen.'

Liverpool's new signings graded: How Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez got on in their Premier League debuts for the champions against Bournemouth

Liverpool made history at Anfield on Friday night as they became the first reigning champions to name as many as four Premier League debutants in their opening-day starting XI. That shows the level of change at the club this summer and how they have bucked a trend, with the Reds keen to evolve – not stand still – in the aftermath of their league title triumph. Hugo Ekitike started in attack and scored - who needs Alexander Isak? - and his strike partners, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, also found the net. Federico Chiesa, meanwhile, came off the bench to net, with fellow new boys Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz also starting. But who had a league debut to remember? Who failed to live up to their billing? And who was limited in terms of their attacking output? Daily Mail Sport's LEWIS STEELE was at Anfield to kee[ a close eye on all four to bring you a report card… HUGO EKITIKE - A It is hard to avoid viewing everything through the lens of 'what would Darwin Nunez do?' when it comes to the new No 9. But given fans had a passionate love-hate relationship with the former striker, one cannot help but turning the mind to the Uruguayan every time Ekitike wows his new fanbase. We did it last week when he played a lovely give-and-go and then unleashed a fine finish at Wembley in the Community Shield, and we did it after two minutes here after he was dropping deep and spraying passes around in an all-round display. And we certainly did it when he found himself clear on goal, gave Djordje Petrovic the eyes and confidently slotted into the open space to score. This was a league debut to remember for Ekitike, not just for his goal but a fine performance which would have delighted boss Arne Slot. The Dutchman spent so much of last season demanding more from his No 9s in an all-round sense. Liverpool signed Ekitike for £79million from Eintracht Frankfurt so none of this will come as a surprise to any in the recruitment team. He was signed not just for his goal-scoring – but it certainly helps a striker to start life at a new club with two goals in two competitive games. FLORIAN WIRTZ - B Wirtz could be the signing of the season in the Premier League after his £116million move from Bayer Leverkusen. But this was not the night that he showed as much. There were some lovely touches by the effervescent German but he failed to get a real chokehold on the game as he has so often for club and country in the last few years. As he did last week in the Community Shield, Wirtz started the game well but slowly faded and looked tired towards the end. JEREMIE FRIMPONG - B A bit like his former Leverkusen colleague, Frimpong will be an exciting player to watch this year – but this was not the game in which he showed that. He was fairly limited in an attacking sense and did not demonstrate any of the qualities that made him be described as a 'little assassin' by former boss Neil Lennon when asked for an honest appraisal by Daily Mail Sport earlier this summer. MILOS KERKEZ - C Again, it feels harsh to be ranking players based on 90 minutes - or 59 in Kerkez's case - but there is more to come from Kerkez, too. The Hungary international was brought in from Bournemouth and his every touch got booed by Cherries fans, who rightfully took umbrage with the way he handled his exit by effectively flirting with Liverpool on social media. And the travelling fans would have been ironically happy to see Kerkez struggle somewhat, given a tough time by his old colleague Antoine Semenyo. He did not show any of the attacking threat he demonstrated so well in two seasons on the south coast and was caught out of position several times in a defensive sense. More to come from both full backs, who have tough competition from veteran Andy Robertson and exciting Conor Bradley, though the latter is injured at present… PS… The newest of the Liverpool recruits was watching from the stands in £26m Parma defender Giovanni Leoni, 18.
