Seattle Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer will represent Germany at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship.
The 33-year-old has represented Germany at the World Championships five times, and this year's event will mark the sixth time he's participated. Due to Germany's young but developing status in hockey, Grubauer has been unable to collect any medals.
Grubauer has played 18 games at the World Championships, posting a 7-8-0 record, a .912 SV% and a 2.64 GAA. He'll be hoping to regain some confidence in this tournament, as it was evident that he was lacking it this season with the Kraken.

Grubauer's Kraken career has been underwhelming, to put it lightly. After completing his fourth season with the team, he recorded the worst save percentage of his career by a healthy margin. His save percentage had risen by each passing season, improving to .899 during the 2023-24 campaign, but this season it plummeted to an all-time low.
In 26 games, the Rosenheim, GER., native posted a .875 SV%, earning a demotion to the Coachella Valley Firebirds. In the AHL, his struggles continued, as he could only muster a .893 SV% in seven games.
With two years remaining on his $5.9M cap hit, the Kraken need Grubauer to find his game and, at the very least, serve as a reliable backup goaltender for Joey Daccord.
Grubauer is now the eighth Kraken player to represent their country in Stockholm, Sweden, for the World Championship.

San Francisco to host massive Pokémon celebration in 2026

The Pokémon Company is bringing a new kind of fan experience to San Francisco next year with the debut of Pokémon XP, an official convention slated to run alongside the Pokémon World Championships. Announced during the closing ceremony of this year's World Championships in Anaheim, Pokémon XP is scheduled to take place at the Moscone Center from Aug. 28-30, 2026. The event will offer a celebration of all things Pokémon, including interactive panels, exclusive merchandise, workshops and appearances by special guests. 'Attendees will join a celebration of community,' the company said in a statement on Sunday, Aug. 17. Pokémon XP will effectively replace many of the company's fan-oriented side attractions typically seen at the World Championships, such as art exhibits and meet-and-greets. Tickets for Pokémon XP go on sale Sept. 17, with single-day passes priced at $120 for adults and $70 for children. Fans seeking access to the Championship Sunday finals — the tournament's marquee event — will need to purchase multi-day passes, priced at $150 for adults and $120 for kids. The 2026 Championship Sunday will be at Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors.

USA Swimming announces 2025 Golden Goggle Awards nominees

Individual world champions Katie Ledecky, Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass, Katharine Berkoff and Luca Urlando headline the nominees for USA Swimming's Golden Goggle Awards. The annual Golden Goggles are largely based on performances at major international meets. The four nominees for Female Athlete of the Year include Ledecky, who has won the award a record eight times outright, plus shared it with Douglass in 2023. At this summer's World Championships, Ledecky won the 800m and 1500m freestyles. In the 800m, she became the first swimmer to win a seventh world title in the same event. In the 1500m, she extended a 15-year win streak in the event. Walsh won her first two individual long-course world titles in the 50m and 100m butterflies. Douglass broke her own American record in winning the 200m breaststroke. Berkoff claimed the 50m backstroke for her first individual global title. The Male Athlete of the Year nominees include Urlando, the lone U.S. man to win individual gold at worlds (200m fly). Plus individual silver medalists Jack Alexy (100m free), Shaine Casas (200m individual medley) and Luke Hobson (200m free). The two nominees for Relay Performance of the Year — women's 4x100m medley and mixed 4x100m free — each broke the world record. The Golden Goggle Awards show is Sept. 27 in Denver. They were first held in 2004. Fan voting here is open through Friday. 2025 Golden Goggle Awards Nominees Female Athlete of the Year Katharine Berkoff Kate Douglass Katie Ledecky Gretchen Walsh Male Athlete of the Year Jack Alexy Shaine Casas Luke Hobson Luca Urlando Coach of the Year Bob Bowman Todd DeSorbo Anthony Nesty Fran Crippen Open Water Athlete of the Year Mariah Denigan Dylan Gravley Brinkleigh Hansen Ivan Puskovitch Relay Performance of the Year Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay Women's 4x100m Medley Relay Nick Zaccardi,

Kraken Hire Ryan Jankowski As Assistant General Manager

The Seattle Kraken have hired Ryan Jankowski to be an assistant general manager, becoming the third assistant GM in the organization. Jankowski is joined by Ricky Olczyk and Alexandra Mandrycky as assistant GMs working under GM Jason Boterill. Previously, Jankowski was working as the Director of Amateur Scouting and Associate Director for the Arizona Coyotes and the Utah Mammoth, but he has plenty of experience working in the NHL and in a front office. "We're excited to bring someone of Ryan's stature to our organization," said Kraken GM Botterill. "Ryan has a wealth of experience, both in the NHL and internationally. His expertise in player evaluation and player development will be a big plus for our group." Prior to his time with the Coyotes and Mammoth organization, the 51-year-old worked with the Buffalo Sabres as the Director of Amateur Scouting, the Montreal Canadiens as a scout and the New York Islanders as a scout and assistant GM. Jankowski was also heavily involved with Team Canada from 2013-17, as the Director of Player Personnel and Head Scout. "I'm thrilled to join the Kraken as an assistant GM," said Jankowski. "After talking with Jason and the leadership team, I knew this would be a great fit. This team has tremendous potential and an exciting future, which I'm happy to be a part of. I'm excited to get started in Seattle." Jankowski is another addition to the Kraken's front office, which has endured plenty of change over this off-season.
