Kraken Goaltender To Represent Germany At World Championship

Seattle Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer (31) plays the puck against the Minnesota Wild during the second period at Xcel Energy Center. Mandatory Credit: Nick Wosika-Imagn Images Seattle Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer will represent Germany at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship. The 33-year-old has represented Germany at the World Championships five times, and this year's event will mark the sixth time he's participated. Due to Germany's young but developing status in hockey, Grubauer has been unable to collect any medals. Grubauer has played 18 games at the World Championships, posting a 7-8-0 record, a .912 SV% and a 2.64 GAA. He'll be hoping to regain some confidence in this tournament, as it was evident that he was lacking it this season with the Kraken. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement Grubauer's Kraken career has been underwhelming, to put it lightly. After completing his fourth season with the team, he recorded the worst save percentage of his career by a healthy margin. His save percentage had risen by each passing season, improving to .899 during the 2023-24 campaign, but this season it plummeted to an all-time low. In 26 games, the Rosenheim, GER., native posted a .875 SV%, earning a demotion to the Coachella Valley Firebirds. In the AHL, his struggles continued, as he could only muster a .893 SV% in seven games. With two years remaining on his $5.9M cap hit, the Kraken need Grubauer to find his game and, at the very least, serve as a reliable backup goaltender for Joey Daccord. Grubauer is now the eighth Kraken player to represent their country in Stockholm, Sweden, for the World Championship. Seattle Kraken put struggling goaltender Philipp Grubauer on waivers

SEATTLE — The Seattle Kraken put goaltender Philipp Grubauer on waivers Wednesday with the purpose of sending him to the minors, and he would be assigned to the American Hockey League's Coachella Valley Firebirds if he clears. Grubauer has struggled in 21 starts this season, losing 16 of them. His .866 save percentage and 3.83 goals-against average rank last in the NHL this season among netminders who have played in at least 17 games. The 33-year-old German has two more seasons left on his contract at a salary cap hit of $5.9 million, which ranks 14th and 11th highest for goalies signed for 2025-26 and 2026-27, respectively. That makes it highly unlikely he is claimed by any of the league's other 31 teams, even with the cap expected to increase dramatically. Grubauer was the Washington Capitals' playoff-opening Game 1 starter when they won the Cup in 2018, and he was a Vezina Trophy finalist with Colorado in 2021. He has appeared in 412 regular-season and playoff games with the Capitals, Avalanche and Hurricanes since making his debut in the league in 2013.

Exploring Impact of Seattle Kraken Waiving Philipp Grubauer

The Seattle Kraken have waived goaltender Philipp Grubauer on Wednesday following a recent rough stretch of games. This season has been one to forget for the German netminder with a 5-15-1 record, a brutal 3.83 goals against average and a measly .866 save percentage. Starting goaltender Joey Daccord has done the best he can to keep the Kraken above water but with the season already halfway finished, they will need to make changes if they want a chance at a playoff spot. We love to see a good goalie assist 🍎 Cc: Joey Daccord — NHL (@NHL) January 15, 2025 More NHL: NHL Insider Hints to Potential Trade including Sabres' Dylan Cozens, Canucks' Elias Pettersson The Kraken are 22-27-3 this season and sit only eight points back of the second wild card spot occupied by the Calgary Flames. Seattle's offence has been mediocre with a 2.92 goals per game average but the defensive end has been what's holding the team back with a 3.19 goals against average, which ranks eighth-worst in the NHL. They are currently +3000 to make the playoffs and have an over/under set at 76.5 for regular season points. The move to send Grubauer to the AHL should allow the team to give Daccord a better backup option in Ales Stezka, a 28-year-old Czech goaltender that has yet to see NHL action. In the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, Stezka has been fairly decent with a 26-18-10 record with a 2.73 goals against average. He appears to be the franchise's best option for the role and the remaining netminders in the AHL are still young and need more time to develop. More NHL: Why Alex Ovechkin Could Break Wayne Gretzky's Scoring Record This Season Grubauer was one of the Kraken's first big ticket free agent signings when they agreed to a six-year, $35.4-million pact in July 2021. The deal has been a sour one since joining the team as he's managed a 54-76-12 record and a .890 save percentage in 151 appearances over the last four seasons in Seattle. The hope is that the switch up in the crease can hopefully build things towards the right direction as even a subtle move in net can change the projection of your team. A perfect example is when the Avalanche drastically improved their goaltending situation by making a pair of trades to acquire netminders Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood.

Kraken Place Goaltender Philipp Grubauer On Waivers

The Seattle Kraken have placed goaltender Philipp Grubauer on waivers. The #SeaKraken have placed goaltender Philipp Grubauer on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to the Coachella Valley @Firebirds. — Seattle Kraken PR (@SeattleKrakenPR) January 29, 2025 The 33-year-old netminder had another difficult outing last night, allowing five goals on 22 shots. He now has a 5-15-1 record with a .866 SV% and a 3.83 GAA. Both stats are the worst of his career. The Kraken signed Grubauer to a six-year, $5.9M AAV contract to be their starting goaltender back in July 2021 and is now in year four of the contract. His star-studded performances from the Washington Capitals and the Colorado Avalanche failed to come along with him to Seattle and has now left GM Ron Francis and the Kraken organization with limited options. Dan Bylsma said the #SeaKraken hung Philipp Grubauer out to dry. We asked if that happens disproportionately more when Grubauer plays than when Daccord plays. Dan's response: 'No.' — Sound Of Hockey (@sound_hockey) January 29, 2025 His high cap hit and poor performances almost guarantee that he'll clear waivers and when he does, the German goaltender will join the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Grubauer has accumulated 105 games of AHL experience which came with the Hershey Bears. The last time Grubauer played an AHL game was in the 2014-15 season. At the moment it's unknown what the plan is for Grubauer. How long he stays with the Firebirds and what happens if his struggling play continues in the AHL is undetermined.
