PIA back in profit, eyes UK routes and Turkish Airlines partnership
Pakistan's national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), has been operating profitably since March 2024, a government official told the parliament on Wednesday.
During the National Assembly's Question Hour, Parliamentary Secretary Zeb Jaffar said PIA had recovered financially and had resumed flights to the European Union, including services to Paris.
Responding to a query from MNA Sharmila Faruqi, Jaffar noted that damaging remarks made previously on the floor of the House had negatively impacted the airline's performance and reputation.
'The consequences of those remarks were felt by the country,' she said.
He was referring to a controversial statement made in parliament by former aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which resulted in a ban on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to multiple countries.
Jaffar confirmed that renewed engagement with the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had enabled PIA to restart flights to Europe. She added that discussions with UK aviation regulators were also progressing.
Talks are also under way with Turkish Airlines to enhance international connectivity for Pakistani passengers, she said.
The government aims to expand PIA's operations to profitable destinations, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. Jaffar emphasised that these efforts are ongoing and their results will become more evident in the coming months.
PIA has also launched direct flights from Lahore to Azerbaijan's Baku, as part of its ongoing push to strengthen international air links and promote tourism.
Last month, PIA reported its first annual profit in 21 years and marked a significant turnaround as it moved forward with plans to sell the airline
According to documents seen by Bloomberg, PIA recorded earnings per share of Rs5.01 for the year ending in December, its first profitable year since 2003, based on audited financial statements.

Germany urges Pakistan to allow back over 200 expelled Afghans
Berlin said Monday that more than 200 Afghans waiting to be offered sanctuary in Germany had been deported by Pakistan to their Taliban-run home country in recent days. The German government was urging Islamabad to allow them back, said foreign ministry spokesman Josef Hinterseher, as an aid group voiced alarm for their fate and those of others. The deportees are part of a group previously offered refuge in Germany but now caught between Chancellor Friedrich Merz's tougher immigration policy and a wave of expulsions from Pakistan. Pakistani police had recently arrested 'around 450' Afghans who were previously accepted under the German scheme for people at risk from the Taliban, Hinterseher told reporters. Of those, '211 people, according to our current information, have been deported to Afghanistan,' he said. Another '245 people were allowed to leave camps' in Pakistan where they had been gathered prior to their scheduled deportation, he said. 'We are continuing to talk to Pakistan to facilitate the return of those who have already been deported.' Last week two German rights groups launched legal proceedings against two German ministers, accusing them of 'abandonment and failure to render assistance' to those hoping for German visas under the scheme. Germany set up the programme under former chancellor Olaf Scholz in the wake of the Taliban's 2021 takeover, to help Afghans who had worked with German institutions and their families. It also included people deemed particularly threatened by the Taliban, including journalists and human rights activists. However, the programme has been put on hold as part of a stricter immigration policy brought in under Merz, who took office in May, leaving some 2,000 Afghans stranded in Pakistan waiting for German visas. Pakistan first launched a deportation drive in 2023 and renewed it in April when it rescinded hundreds of thousands of residence permits for Afghans, threatening to arrest those who did not leave. Eva Beyer from the Airbridge Kabul initiative set up to help those affected told AFP that the deportees now faced a 'critical situation'. She said that 'around 350 people', including those freed from the camps over the weekend, were still at risk of deportation. 'Visa procedures have been frozen since May, nothing's been happening since then,' she said. The German government says the programme is still under review despite a court ruling last month which found that it had a 'legally binding commitment' to give visas to those who had been accepted. A German interior ministry spokesman said Monday that an individual review, potentially followed by security screening, was underway for each person in the admission programme.

PM vows relief after K-P flood havoc
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday pledged the federal government's complete support for flood-hit communities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, announcing the donation of one month's salary from the federal cabinet to aid relief efforts. Chairing a meeting to review ongoing relief efforts by federal government in flood affected areas of K-P, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), the premier directed the federal institutions to intensify efforts to assist rain and flood-affected people in various districts of K-P. "In this hour of calamity, there is no federal or provincial government. We must ensure assistance and rehabilitation for the affected people. Helping our distressed Pakistani brothers and sisters is a national responsibility," the prime minister said. He said this was a time not for politics but for service and healing the people's wounds. The prime minister stressed that the federal government will also provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased and affected individuals under the prime minister's relief package. Minister for Kashmir Affairs and G-B will oversee relief and rehabilitation operations in affected areas while the relevant federal ministers will personally monitor the restoration of electricity, water, roads, and other facilities, the prime minister added. Furthermore, he also directed all relevant federal ministers to visit K-P, AK, and G-B in person. The prime minister directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) not to differentiate between provincial or national highways; and opening routes for relief must be the top priority. He also ordered Ministry of Communications, NHA, and FWO to ensure repair of highways and bridges in affected areas. "Minister for Communications should personally oversee rehabilitation operations." The prime minister also directed Minister for Power to visit affected areas, inspect, and prioritize restoration of the electricity system, adding that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) should immediately submit a final assessment of damages. "NDMA should present a comprehensive plan for the distribution of relief items to flood victims in K-P," the prime minister said stressing the Ministry of Finance to provide necessary resources to NDMA. He instructed that all the relevant federal ministers to remain in affected areas until the last person received assistance and basic infrastructure was restored. Ministry of Health should send medicines and medical teams to K-P and establish medical camps while Benazir Income Support Programme should be mobilized to assist the affected, the prime minister directed. During the meeting, the prime minister and other participants prayed for the departed souls and speedy recovery of the injured. The meeting was briefed on the ongoing relief activities by NDMA and federal ministers designated by the prime minister.

Swedish Ambassador Alexandra Berg von Linde stated this in a meeting with Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan on Monday, where they discussed bilateral trade, investment opportunities and other areas of mutual collaboration. The ambassador expressed her condolences over the recent loss of lives and property in Pakistan, caused by heavy rains and cloudburst incidents. Jam Kamal, while terming it a natural disaster, underlined the urgent need for collective efforts to address climate change challenges. During the meeting, both sides reviewed avenues where they could strengthen economic cooperation, with a special focus on trade enhancement. The minister highlighted Pakistan's potential in textiles, readymade garments, IT and technical education, mining, surgical goods and sports equipment, noting that Swedish companies could greatly benefit from investing in those sectors. The policy aims to support exports while allowing imports of quality products not available domestically, which will enable value addition before re-export. He highlighted Pakistan's progress on reforms, especially the establishment of the National Compliance Centre to help local businesses meet national and international standards. He proposed the organisation of seminars in association with the compliance centre to inform foreign companies and diplomatic missions about compliance processes in Pakistan. Both sides identified mining, renewable energy, green technologies, vocational training and skill development as areas for future collaboration. The commerce minister emphasised that Pakistan had a large pool of skilled youth, especially in healthcare, where Pakistani professionals could meet shortages in Europe, including the nursing staff. He underscored that more than 40 Swedish companies, including global brands such as H&M and IKEA, were already sourcing goods from Pakistan, reflecting the strength of bilateral economic ties. He invited Swedish investment in renewable energy, sustainable manufacturing, IT and infrastructure, while encouraging Sweden's participation in the upcoming trade events in Pakistan such as FoodAg 2025. The minister appreciated Sweden's consistent support for Pakistan's GSP Plus status in the European Union and urged continued advocacy during the next review process. He also called for enhanced engagement between Pakistan's central bank and Swedish financial regulators to address the compliance-related issues faced by exporters. Reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to deepening political, economic and people-to-people ties, he said both countries had an immense untapped potential for cooperation.
