NIT-Tiruchi achieves 87% placements in 2025
'The institute managed to weather the year with minimal impact, securing 1,322 jobs across different industry sectors. Over 286 organisations participated in the campus placement process,' Ms. Aghila said on Thursday, addressing a press conference ahead of the institute's convocation on July 26.
NIT-T has made progress with its Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), with a cohort of 50 students enrolled in the four-year course launched in October 2024.
The BSc. B.Ed course, approved by the National Council for Teacher Education, is offered in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics streams and trains teachers for Classes XI and XII across all school boards.
'NIT-T's facilities and faculty are utilised to raise the quality of school education, especially in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) streams. As the syllabus has evolved, we have to adapt to the needs of students from the school level. There are three levels of teacher training degrees: Classes I to VIII; Classes IX and X, and Classes XI and XII. NIT-T has been given Level 3 and is among the 61 institutions selected for the project's second phase,' Ms. Aghila said.
In line with the National Education Policy 2020, NIT-T has restructured its academic framework to support a flexible curriculum. 'Students now have multiple entry and exit options at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This year, students completed 160 National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) courses, leading to the transfer of 9,933 credits through the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). So far, 9,809 students (including graduates) have obtained ABC IDs,' said Ms. Aghila.
Security measures
In view of recent incidents on campus, security arrangements have been tightened to ensure better monitoring of people's movements within the NIT-T grounds, Dr. Aghila said.
'We are making sure that we are getting the data of all the people who are entering the campus. In the sites where repairs are ongoing, workers cannot leave the spot until evening. We have increased the number of security personnel to improve surveillance of traffic within the campus. Besides this, based on public feedback, we have introduced two battery vehicles as a paid service to help students and faculty move inside the campus. Since the demand is high, we are planning to add two more soon,' said Ms. Aghila.
The mental health needs of students are being looked into, said Ms. Aghila. NIT-T students and faculty have access to YourDOST, an online counselling service, that has been utilised by at least 1,700 persons this year, she added.
Foreign students
Under the Indian Cultural Exchange Programme, facilitated by Indian Council for Cultural Relations, seven foreign students have applied to study in NIT-T. The 'Study in India' programme has seen response from six students belonging to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the United States, said NIT-T officials.
As part of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, 15-20 foreign students would be sent by the U.S. college to study at NIT-T's Department of Architecture for one semester this year, said Ms. Aghila.

Government approves MERITE scheme to strengthen technical institutes
The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to implement the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) scheme in 275 institutions across the country – 175 engineering institutes and 100 polytechnic colleges – Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a Cabinet briefing on Friday (August 8, 2025). A government statement said MERITE would work as a Central Sector Scheme with a total financial implication of ₹4,200 crore to be spent in five years, between 2025-26 and 2029-30, adding that ₹2,100 crore will come as an external assistance from the World Bank in the form of a loan. The Education Ministry, in its statement, said the scheme is meant to 'improve the quality, equity, and governance' in the selected technical institutes by interventions aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the scheme and posted on X, saying, 'Research, innovation and skilling will be significantly boosted with this Cabinet decision to support 'Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education'.' Education Minister Dharmender Pradhan said the scheme will empower and provide employability to over 7.5 lakh students in India, adding, 'Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji has placed unprecedented focus on transforming and revolutionising India's education landscape.' The outcomes of the scheme include preparing digitalization strategies in participating States/UTs, developing guidelines for multidisciplinary programmes in technical courses, increasing learning, employability skills, and transition rates across student groups, strengthening research and innovation among others, the government statement said. It said that there will be a focus on 'development of future academic administrators, especially women faculty'. The project appraisal report prepared by the World Bank for the scheme in 2023 had said that the 'overall research productivity of faculty members in engineering education is low, and the research environment needs improvement' and that 'most engineering institutions have weak research and innovation linkages with industry and society'. The Education Ministry said on Friday (August 8, 2025) that the scheme's outcomes will include better quality assurance and governance mechanisms, an increase in accreditation, better technical education institutions, and a relevant market-aligned curriculum, among others. It will be implemented in government engineering institutions and polytechnics in all States and UTs, adding that institutions like IITs, IIMs, and regulatory bodies such as AICTE, NBA, will 'play a significant role in the scheme implementation'. The interventions for students will include offering internships, updating curricula to align with the industry, organising faculty development programmes and setting up research hubs. Support will also be given for 'incubation and innovation centres, skill and maker labs, and language workshops'.

I-T dept flags gaps in reporting of property sales
Nagpur: The income tax department is receiving a growing number of tax evasion petitions (TEPs) involving undisclosed property transactions, with officials pointing to underreporting by land registrar offices as a possible factor enabling defaulters to hide deals. TEPs — formal complaints from the public alleging tax evasion — have increasingly highlighted the non-disclosure of major property sales in tax returns. Sources said about 20% of petitions pertain to such cases. Investigations confirmed several allegations, leading to the levy of capital gains tax. In some cases, however, transactions involved only cash payments. Land registrars, under the state government, are required to report every real estate deal above Rs30 lakh (on which stamp duty is paid) to the I-T department under the statement of financial transactions (STF) system. A significant mismatch has been detected between deals registered at Hingna sub-registrar's office and those reported under STF, prompting an inquiry. Sources said the gaps suggest a need to strengthen the STF mechanism. If reported in STF data, deals reflect in the I-T system, making non-disclosure easier to detect. However, unreported transactions escape scrutiny. Even when payments are made via cheque, sellers can avoid paying capital gains tax by omitting the deal from their returns, said officials. Capital gains tax applies to profits from the sale of property and other assets. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
